2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Pettigrew, Sandwich and Tank

  • From Adel H.:

The Falcons are in no way going to take Pettigrew from OK St if Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews are still on the board, maybe even Peria Jerry. Right now it looks like they’re trying to get Tony Gonzalez from the Chiefs and while that hasn’t happened yet, it doesn’t look like the Falcons would go offense over defense this early.

    My Response:

If the Falcons acquire Tony Gonzalez, I will change my mock. If not, I will keep Brandon Pettigrew there. He’s a need; he’s the type of tight end they want; and he’s one of the top players available there.

Brian Cushing may slip to Round 2. Matt wrote an excellent blog entry about it: http://walterfootball.com/mattblog090414.php

Peria Jerry is an under tackle; the Falcons have a pretty good under tackle; they need a nose tackle, so I don’t consider Jerry much of an option.

  • From Tony C.:

What did you think of the Bucs signing Leftwich? I like it. That should end the talks of mock drafts saying theyre drafting Freeman & the chances of them drafting Freeman. Id rather have Leftwich over Freeman. Leftwich is the same size as Freeman but Leftwich got a super bowl ring last year he has experience & he could be a starter for them for the next couple of years (hes 29) even though the Bucs are talking about Mccown. Leftwich would give them the best chance.

    My Response:

The Leftwich signing has absolutely nothing to do with Josh Freeman. In 1999, the Vikings had Randall Cunningham. They signed Jeff George that offseason. In the draft, they took Daunte Culpepper. Leftwich was brought in to be a backup, and that’s all he’ll be. Freeman is still a very viable option at No. 19, provided he’s even there.

  • From John J.:

I know you’ll probably cover this in your next mock draft update but I’m curious about the Cinnci pick with the signing of Tank Johnson. I have always been confident that if the top two OT are gone cinnci goes with B.J. Raji but now people more and more are saying Andre Smith and I just don’t trust him. so if neither of the top 2 OT are there where do we go? should I trust Andre Smith?

    My Response:

I wouldn’t trust Andre Smith. He showed up overweight and out of shape to the Combine… that’s like an average guy showing up drunk to a job interview. It’s irresponsible and shows that Smith has absolutely no work ethic. I wouldn’t draft Smith with a second-round pick.

That said, I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Bengals look at Smith. However, I think the pick is still B.J. Raji. I know they added Tank Johnson, but they signed him to a 1-year deal, so there’s no commitment there. If Marvin Lewis really likes Raji, he’ll take him if both top offensive tackles are gone.

  • From Lucas R.:

I know you didn’t write anything about this on your website, but I didn’t know anyone else who would be able to answer this question. What’s up with the Packers working out Greg Paulus? Did he even enter this year’s draft? I know he was a great QB in HS, but why would the Packers even have any interest if they already have Aaron Rodgers and drafted 2 QBs last year?

    My Response:

Greg Paulus is only 6-1, so the Packers could be looking at him as a wide receiver. I doubt they think he can play quarterback for him. He proved at Duke that he couldn’t even make good decisions on the basketball court, so I wouldn’t trust him at all as a quarterback.
