2011 NFL Draft Mailbag

NFL Draft Mailbag Notes: These are some e-mails I received after the conclusion of the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

2011 NFL Draft E-mails – Post-Round 1 E-mails

  • From Terrence F:

Danny Watkins will be in an Eagles uniform the first day trading opens up. Thats the only reason they drafted him. Watkins is a b+ pickyoull see when he is in the pro bowl in 2012 and a mainstay on the O line for 5 or 6 years

–> No, it’s an F. The oldest player ever taken in Round 1, and he’s still learning how to play football. Andy Reid doesn’t re-sign anyone over 30, so he’s 4-5 years and out.

  • From Bob B:

Walt you are DEAD wrong on this one..What impact player would the Falcons get at 27..huh?? The pick next year will be in the late first also SO I think they made a great pick up here with Julio. And what says he isnt in the same league as Calvin? julio put up better numbers in college and did as good as Calvin at the combine. If the picks arent gonna be better than what we already have than why keep them…Great move!!

–> I’ll quote Greg Cox – teams that think they’re one player away usually struggle the following season. I hate that the Falcons surrendered a first-round pick next year. That could really come back to haunt them.

Julio Jones is not in the same league as Calvin Johnson. Not even close.

  • From Greg M:

Hey Walt . . . does Derek Sherrod fit the “appearance” you were referring to for the Packers!!

Love the site, but that silly line you kept using doesn’t help your credibility. This makes the 5th or 6th black offensive lineman Ted has drafted.

–> It’s a joke. And Who cares if Belichick used a pick on a black lineman or not? Don’t take things so seriously man.

  • From Robert B:

With the Mark Ingram drafting, what possible role will Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory play? And how did Bowers fall out of round 1?

–> Pierre Thomas will be the pass-catching running back on third down. Chris Ivory won’t get many carries. By the way, Mark Ingram is going to be a fantasy stud. He’s going to score a ton of touchdowns in that offense.

And Bowers fell out of Round 1 because of his degenerative knee. Teams are scared.

  • From Baba Hanz:

Your penis can do much more!

–> Whoops, how did that spam mail get in here?

  • From Rob S:

I know you’re probably innundated with mail right now, but I picked up this nugget last night from Twitter. Quentin Groves tweeted this:

“whoever gets Ryan Mallett is gonna get a hell of a steal!!”

    The next tweet was this:

“RT @ThePhillyRaider @QuentinGroves52 Could it be the Raiders? Know something we don’t<~~hint hint"

Granted, I somehow doubt Davis is sharing his draft strategy with his weakside linebacker, but sometimes these things have a way of filtering out.

If this pick happens, this will also be my last email to you since, as a Raiders fan, I will have no choice but to quietly walk into the ocean and drown myself. 🙂 Seriously, though, if Davis takes Mallett, we’ll know last year’s strong draft was a mirage. I’m going to be nervous all day over this.

–> Haha that’s pretty interesting. Nothing the Raiders do would surprise me. If the Mallett’s the pick, you have my condolences.

  • From Go Zenon S:

    I wanted to defend the Detroit pick of Nick Fairley and why i think its a great pick. so here goes;

in a division with Andre Peterson, you’re going to want to be able to stop the run and in a division with Aaron Rogers, you need to get to the QB. Fairley helps fill these needs and makes life for both Green Bay and Minnesota far more difficult. and with the Bears O-line still being fragile – even with the addition of Carimi – who could resist a chance to add another pass-rusher to try and make Jake Cutler cry like a baby (i say cry. hes not the type to cry really. no, hes the type who will just go to his room in a strop, listen to My Chemical Romance really loud, msn-ing with his best bud about how everyone hates him).

–> I’m concerned about Fairley’s work ethic and the fact that he’s a one-year wonder. I’m not concerned he’ll try hard all the time, so I’m not a fan of taking a guy like that and not filling a need. The Lions were fine at DT.
