2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Tight Ends 11-20

These 2010 Fantasy Football Tight Ends Rankings will be updated often throughout the summer, so make sure you check back from time to time. Also, be sure to check out my other 2010 Fantasy Football articles, which will include sleepers, busts, tons of 2010 Fantasy Football mock drafts and other material.

  1. Kellen Winslow Jr., TE, Buccaneers. Bye: 4.
AUG. 3 UPDATE: Kellen Winslow Jr. has yet to practice. It looks like he’ll be back on the field soon, but it’s a reminder that he’s had six knee surgeries in the past five years. I’d stay away from him in the single-digit rounds. The risk is just way too great.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Kellen Winslow Jr. was the top receiver on the Buccaneers last year, catching 77 passes for 884 yards and five touchdowns. He’s a very good TE1, but there are some risks involved. Winslow just had arthroscopic knee surgery, which marks the fifth time in six years that he’s had an operation on his knees. Also, the arrival of Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams means that Winslow’s targets will dip just a bit.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 64 catches. 760 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 112.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 176.

  2. Jermaine Gresham, TE, Bengals. Bye: 6.
AUG. 31 UPDATE: Jermaine Gresham continues to grow as part of Cincinnati’s offense. He saw three of Carson Palmer’s 12 targets at Buffalo, including one in the end zone that he converted for a touchdown. I usually hate drafting rookie tight ends, but Gresham is talented enough to be a very rare exception. I’d have no qualms about having him in my starting lineup at this point.

AUG. 21 UPDATE: For the second week in a row, Jermaine Gresham really stood out as a first-team offensive player. Carson Palmer targeted his rookie tight end four times, and Gresham was able to come up with three receptions for 34 yards.

AUG. 16 UPDATE: Jermaine Gresham is finally coming on. Playing exclusively with the first team Sunday night, Gresham converted on all three of his targets for 37 yards. Drafting rookie tight ends is often futile, but Gresham is talented enough to be a rare exception; with Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco garnering all of the attention, things will open up for Gresham.

AUG. 7 UPDATE: Jason Cole (Yahoo! Sports) noted that Jermaine Gresham looks “lost” in training camp. The signing of Terrell Owens was already a bad enough hit to Gresham’s 2010 fantasy prospects.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Jermaine Gresham is an insanely talented tight end who should become an immediate end-zone threat for the Bengals. Cincinnati’s current coaching staff has no history of turning tight ends into fantasy stars, but the front office didn’t select Gresham at No. 21 overall so he could just block and stand on the sidelines.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 710 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 107.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 167.

  3. Owen Daniels, TE, Texans. Bye: 7.
JULY 31 UPDATE: Gary Kubiak said Friday that he’s hoping to have Owen Daniels in the lineup for the opener. Key word: hoping. Daniels is coming off ACL surgery, and won’t practice or play in preseason games this August. There are just way too many other options at tight end to consider Daniels in the first 10 rounds.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Major risk-reward situation. In seven games last year, Owen Daniels caught 39 balls for 497 yards and five touchdowns, which means he was on pace for 89 receptions, 1,136 yards and 11 scores. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in early November. All early reports are positive that Daniels will be ready for the season opener. If he were completely healthy, he would obviously be projected to accumulate much better stats, but he’s definitely worth a mid-round flier.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 59 catches. 675 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 103.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 162.

  4. Dustin Keller, TE, Jets. Bye: 7.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: Dusin Keller saw six targets from Mark Sanchez versus Washington, catching five of them for 46 yards and a touchdown. Sanchez and Keller have some serious chemistry going. Keller is yet another reason you can wait on drafting a tight end.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Dustin Keller had a disappointing sophomore campaign, catching just 45 balls for 522 yards and two touchdowns despite logging 48 receptions, 535 yards and three scores as a rookie the year before. Keller struggled with consistency; he notched two or less receptions on seven occasions in 2009. Having said that, Mark Sanchez’s growth should help Keller’s numbers improve.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 700 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 100.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 158.

  5. Greg Olsen, TE, Bears. Bye: 8.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: It was really surprising to see Greg Olsen lead the Bears in targets (5) against the Raiders because tight ends are usually not a part of Mike Martz’s offense. Olsen finished with three catches for 26 yards.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Mike Martz has never had much success with tight ends. He had Vernon Davis at his disposal, but couldn’t do anything with him. Greg Olsen’s production will surely take a huge drop in 2010.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 52 catches. 560 yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 98.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 150.

  6. Heath Miller, TE, Steelers. Bye: 5.
AUG. 22 UPDATE: Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite target at New York was Heath Miller, who caught all three balls thrown his way for 33 yards.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Like every other Steeler skill-position player, Heath Miller’s numbers will be down because of Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension and questionable preparation in the wake of his sexual assault case.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 61 catches. 675 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 97.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 158.

  7. John Carlson, TE, Seahawks. Bye: 5.
AUG. 29 UPDATE: I’m not seeing what I want out of John Carlson. He caught just one pass last week, and was targeted only once at Minnesota. Even worse, he was playing in the fourth quarter with Charlie Whitehurst, so Pete Carroll’s obviously not too concerned with his starting tight end staying healthy.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Matt Hasselbeck called John Carlson a “fantasy sleeper” when he tweeted him happy birthday in May. I would agree with Hasselbeck. Carlson was asked to block on about 45 percent of his snaps last year. That’s a high number but it was unavoidable; Seattle’s offensive line was that bad.

However, look for that figure to drop down to about 40 percent in 2010. The Seahawks drafted Russell Okung and signed Chris Baker, a solid blocking tight end. He’ll help out in the blocking department, allowing Carlson to run more routes.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 57 catches. 650 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 95.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 152.

  8. Kevin Boss, TE, Giants. Bye: 8.
Kevin Boss is a solid tight end if you’re in a touchdown-only league; he’s a great end-zone target for Eli Manning. In regular formats, however, Boss is just a TE2.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 42 catches. 550 yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 91.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 133.

  9. Todd Heap, TE, Ravens. Bye: 8.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: So much for Baltimore’s rookie tight ends. Todd Heap caught six of seven targets thrown his way against New York, leading the Ravens with 69 receiving yards and a touchdown. As long as Flacco keeps feeding him the ball, Heap could pick up where he left off at the end of last year and perform as a low-end TE1. Of course he’d have to stay healthy, which is a long shot.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: Todd Heap was actually a decent fantasy option last year, as he caught 53 balls for 593 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately for him, Baltimore drafted two tight ends (Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta) who will eat into the injury-prone Heap’s production.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 575 yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 87.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 137.

  10. Tony Scheffler, TE, Lions. Bye: 7.
Given the choice between Tony Scheffler and Brandon Pettigrew, I’d take the former because Pettigrew is coming off ACL surgery. However, it’s likely that the two talented tight ends will just cancel each other out.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 40 catches. 550 yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 79.
Projected 2010 PPR Fantasy Points: 119.
