2011 Fantasy Football Offseason Stock – Week of Aug. 1
AUG. 7
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated Sunday morning to take these stocks into account.
Anquan Boldin, WR, Ravens
Anquan Boldin is done, but Joe Flacco won’t have any choice but to target him more often in the wake of Derrick Mason signing with the Jets. Still, Boldin will almost likely go way too early in your fantasy draft.
Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens
Joe Flacco has now lost both Derrick Mason and Todd Heap this offseason. He obviously needs to be downgraded in the 2011 Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings.
Montario Hardesty, RB, Browns
Montario Hardesty can’t practice. His knees are still giving him major problems. Don’t draft him until the final couple of rounds as a late flier.
Peyton Hillis, RB, Browns
Montario Hardesty is having major issues getting on to the practice field, so it looks like the Browns won’t be able to orchestrate some sort of a time share between Peyton Hillis and Hardesty, as speculated earlier.
Dustin Keller, TE, Jets
With Derrick Mason aboard, someone on the Jets is going to lose targets. That will likely be Dustin Keller, who wasn’t much of a fantasy factor to begin with.
Derrick Mason, WR, Jets
Non-elite receivers have a poor track record when switching teams. Derrick Mason could be completely finished at 37, and asking him to learn a new offense in such a short period of time could be pretty futile. He’s undraftable.
AUG. 6
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Saturday morning to take these stocks into account.
Travis Beckum, TE, Giants
The Raiders have signed Kevin Boss, so Travis Beckum is projected as New York’s starting tight end. I wouldn’t recommend drafting him, but he’s worth monitoring as a potential waiver-wire acquisition.
Kevin Boss, TE, Raiders
Kevin Boss was pretty much an afterthought in New York’s offense behind Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and Steve Smith (when healthy). In Oakland, he’ll be one of Jason Campbell’s top targets. As Campbell did with Zach Miller, he’ll be looking for Kevin Boss in the end zone.
Chris Cooley, TE, Redskins
It’s not looking good for Chris Cooley. The PPR-friendly tight end has been limping around training camp, and there’s speculation that his knee hasn’t healed. He’ll be dropped in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings.
Patrick Crayton, WR, Chargers
So much for Patrick Crayton flying under the radar as Philip Rivers’ potential No. 2 receiver. Malcom Floyd has re-signed with San Diego.
Ryan Grant, RB, Packers
Ryan Grant has been running exclusively with the first-team offense during training camp thus far. Grant is still a risky proposition because the more talented James Starks could unseat him as the starter, but the upside here is tremendous.
James Starks, RB, Packers
James Starks has shown up to Packers training camp in great shape, but he’s been running with the second team exclusively thus far. Starks is more talented than Ryan Grant and could take over the job at any point during the season, but Grant is definitely the No. 1 back until further notice. One observation: Starks has bulked up to 225, so he could function as the team’s goal-line back.
AUG. 5
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Thursday morning to take these stocks into account.
Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers
The 49ers signed Braylon Edwards, relegating the troublesome and injured Michael Crabtree to Alex Smith’s third option behind Edwards and Vernon Davis.
Braylon Edwards, WR, 49ers
Braylon Edwards has signed with the 49ers. It’s not the most ideal fantasy situation, but it could have been worse; he’s at least the No. 1 receiver in San Francisco.
Shonn Greene, RB, Jets
Rex Ryan told the media Thursday that he plans on giving defenses a “heavy dose of Shonn Greene” this year. It’s not unusual for Ryan to talk up one of his players, but Greene could be headed for a breakout season, based on the fact that New York was willing to sever ties with LaDainian Tomlinson if he didn’t take a paycut.
Montario Hardesty, RB, Browns
Montario Hardesty hasn’t been practicing much during training camp because he’s coming off a knee injury. It appears as though Hardesty won’t do much in the beginning of the season, though he could close out the stretch on a strong note – especially if Peyton Hillis gets injured.
Brandon Marshall, WR, Dolphins
I’ve been hyping up Brandon Marshall all summer, but I’m cooling off on him because, as you may guess, the Dolphins failed to upgrade their quarterback position. Chad Henne is terrible and will continue to limit Marshall’s production. I still expect Marshall to rebound from a down year, but his potential won’t be anywhere close to maximized with Henne.
Alex Smith, QB, 49ers
Alex Smith gets an up arrow because of the Braylon Edwards signing. For the first time in his career, Smith has a legitimate, albeit low-end No. 1 wide receiver to work with.
AUG. 4
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Thursday morning to take these stocks into account.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
The Chiefs signed fullback Le’Ron McClain, a decent run blocker who will help offset the loss of Charlie Weis for Jamaal Charles. Charles will get a bump in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings, but if you plan on spending an early pick on him, remember that the egomanaical Todd Haley doesn’t believe in Charles as a 250-carry-per-year guy.
Roy Helu, RB, Redskins
If you’re into drafting mediocre running backs on terrible teams, Ryan Torain suffered a hand injury and could be out a month. This could open the door for Roy Helu to rush for 3.5 yards per carry with the Redskins this year.
Tim Hightower, RB, Redskins
If you’re into drafting mediocre running backs on terrible teams, Ryan Torain suffered a hand injury and could be out a month. This could open the door for Tim Hightower to rush for 3.5 yards per carry with the Redskins this year. As an added bonus, Hightower is a pretty good receiver out of the backfield.
Brandon Lloyd, WR, Broncos
Kyle Orton will be Denver’s starting quarterback this season. This is bad news for Broncos fans, but Brandon Lloyd figures to benefit fantasy-wise, as he and Orton had great rapport last year. Don’t expect Lloyd to match last year’s numbers though; Josh McDaniels’ presence will be missed in that sense.
Willis McGahee, RB, Broncos
Willis McGahee is now Denver’s short-yardage back in the wake of Kyle Orton taking over the starting quarterback gig. No more Tim Tebow carries inside the five – not early in the season anyway.
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos
Kyle Orton has been named the Broncos’ starting quarterback, which is good news for both of Denver’s starting running backs, since Tim Tebow won’t be running the football until he supplants Orton as the team’s starter late in the year.
Kyle Orton, QB, Broncos
The Broncos don’t seem to know what they are doing, as they named Kyle Orton their starting quarterback. Orton has posted very solid fantasy numbers the past two years, but don’t expect that to continue without Josh McDaniels. John Fox will be running a much more conservative run-based attack.
Tim Tebow, QB, Broncos
A potential top-10 fantasy quarterback bites the dust as the Broncos have foolishly and myopically named Kyle Orton their starting quarterback. Tim Tebow figures to take over for Orton late in the year, so keep him in mind as a potential late-season waiver-wire addition.
Ryan Torain, RB, Redskins
Ryan Torain could be out a month with an injured hand. I’d stay away from all Redskins fantasy players this season, but that’s just me.
AUG. 3
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Wednesday morning to take these stocks into account.
Jason Campbell, QB, Raiders
Jason Campbell was a low-end QB2 fantasy player to begin with, but he may not even qualify for that right now. He lost his most reliable target, Zach Miller, to the Seahawks.
John Carlson, TE, Seahawks
The Seahawks signed Zach Miller, so John Carlson is no longer a factor in fantasy football. Not that he was much of a factor to begin with.
Matt Forte, RB, Bears
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Marion Barber will be Chicago’s goal-line back in 2011. Just what an incredibly thin fantasy running back corps needed – a vulture to steal fantasy points away from a legitimate RB2.
Zach Miller, TE, Seahawks
Zach Miller goes from a mediocre quarterback in Jason Campbell to a truly dreadful one in Tarvaris Jackson. That’s obviously bad news for his fantasy value.
Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Steelers
One of my favorite late-round sleepers, Emmanuel Sanders will be out for three weeks with a foot injury. Sanders could take over as Ben Roethlisberger’s No. 2 target late in the season, but it’ll be difficult for him to do that early on without the reps in training camp and snaps during the preseason.
Roy Williams, WR, Bears
Mike Martz, obviously high on paint fumes, told the media that Roy Williams is an elite receiver who could catch 80 passes this year. Martz is insane, but he’s stubborn and crazy enough to do everything in his power to make his prediction come to fruition. I’m bumping up Williams a bit in my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings.
AUG. 2
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Tuesday morning to take these stocks into account.
Cedric Benson, RB, Bengals
Cedric Benson re-signed with the Bengals on Sunday. It’s unclear why they continue to put up with his mediocrity, but he’ll once again carry the load for the team. Before you pencil him in as a sixth-round fantasy target, keep in mind that their offense won’t be nearly as effective this year, so his YPC and touchdown opportunities will decline.
Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers
Ryan Mathews will miss practice the next few days because of “soreness” after failing a conditioning test. Looks like someone didn’t stay in shape during the lockout. Mathews is not taking his NFL career seriously, so you’ll want to stay away from him in your fantasy drafts. I liked Mathews as a potential sleeper in the spring, but he’s looking like a major bust.
Tim Tebow, QB, Broncos
I’ve received questions about the Tim Tebow situation. I still think Kyle Orton will be traded, so I’m not dropping Tebow in my rankings – for now. If the Broncos are foolish enough to start Orton over Tebow, however, a bunch of things will change, and I’ll update my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings accordingly. As always, follow me @walterfootball for updates.
Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers
With Ryan Mathews missing practice because he’s out of shape, Mike Tolbert will receive even more reps. Tolbert’s shaping up to be a solid mid-round fantasy sleeper.
Chris Wells, RB, Cardinals
Ken Whisenhunt confirmed that Chris Wells will be the starting running back for Arizona this year. Wells is now healthy and has way more talent around him than he did last year. He’s one of my favorite mid-round fantasy sleepers at the moment.
AUG. 1
I’ll have my 2011 Fantasy Football Rankings updated on Monday morning to take these stocks into account.
Plaxico Burress, WR, Jets
Plaxico Burress is going to start for the Jets for some reason. Though he’ll undoubtedly struggle, he’ll be somewhat of a fantasy factor as a Mark Sanchez end zone target.
Jerricho Cotchery, WR, Jets
With Plaxico Burress slated to start for the Jets, Jerricho Cotchery will reprise his role in the slot. He’s no longer draftable in fantasy leagues.
Ed Dickson, TE, Ravens
Todd Heap is gone, so Ed Dickson is the favorite to start as Baltimore’s new tight end. However, he’ll have some competition from Dennis Pitta, so don’t draft him in your fantasy league.
Arian Foster, RB, Texans
Arian Foster led the NFL in broken tackles last year, but part of the reason he was so successful was the elite blocking of fullback Vonta Leach. Leach, arguably the best fullback in the NFL, just signed with the Ravens. Foster should still be a top-three fantasy pick, but he’s no longer the consensus No. 1 fantasy player.
James Jones, WR, Packers
James Jones is back with the Packers. This is the best thing that could have happened to him because non-elite receivers usually struggle when changing teams. Oh, and Aaron Rodgers is pretty good too.
Kevin Kolb, QB, Cardinals
The Cardinals signed Todd Heap, giving Kevin Kolb a reliable, seasoned target outside of Larry Fitzgerald. His fantasy potential has just improved.
Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers
Though Ryan Mathews is getting the first-team work, Mike Tolbert is slated to be the passing-down back in San Diego. This means that Mathews will only be on the field for two downs. It’s starting to become unclear as to why the Chargers spent the No. 12 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft on him.
LeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles
The Eagles signed guard Evan Mathis. Mathis is constantly injured, but he’s a tremendous run-blocker when he’s in the lineup. LeSean McCoy will obviously benefit from this.
Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers
I loved Jordy Nelson as a potential fantasy sleeper, but that’s no longer the case with James Jones back with the team. Jones will eat into Nelson’s targets, as the two figure to split time as Aaron Rodgers’ No. 2 receiver.
Ray Rice, RB, Ravens
Ray Rice could easily finish as the top fantasy back this year. That’s because the Ravens just signed Vonta Leach, arguably the best fullback in the NFL. Leach paved the way for Arian Foster’s league-leading rushing campaign last season, and could help Rice achieve that feat in 2011.
Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers
In addition to being San Diego’s goal-line back, Mike Tolbert will serve as the team’s third-down specialist. He’ll be getting a boost in my 2011 Fantasy Football PPR Cheat Sheet.
