2015 NFL Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Linebackers

By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell

 Linebackers Bench Press Analysis:

For comparison to last year, here are some of the bench-rep numbers from some of the prospects in 2014: Khalil Mack (23), Anthony
Barr (15), Chris Borland (27), Trent Murphy (19) and Ryan
Shazier (25).

The most impressive and jaw-dropping total came
from Clemson outside linebacker Vic Beasley. He cranked out
35 reps, which was a surprise for the speed rusher. Beasley
(6-1, 243) has added good weight, and that bench press total
reflects that. That power will help dispel concerns about
his ability to hold his ground on the edge in the NFL.

TCU inside linebacker Paul Dawson (6-0, 235) had a
decent total with 21 reps. The interviews are the most
important part of the Combine for him.

Florida outside linebacker Dante Fowler (6-3, 261)
had a mildly disappointing total of 19 reps. Fowler could
add more strength, and it looks like he may have dropped
some weight to run faster in the 40.

Nebraska’s Randy Gregory had a quality output with
24 reps. Gregory (6-5, 235) has some natural strength to
him and still could fill out his frame with more muscle.

Miami’s Denzel Perryman is a physical middle
linebacker who puts backs into the ground hard. He showed
that he is committed to the weight room, as he totaled 27
reps on the bench press. Running fast in the 40 is critical
for Perryman.

    Mississippi State inside linebacker Bernardrick
McKinney had a shockingly low total. McKinney (6-4, 246)
tied for last with only 16 reps. That could generate a
concern for shedding blocks from NFL offensive linemen.
McKinney will want to improve on that at his pro day.

Several notable linebackers didn’t participate in
the bench press. That group included Virginia’s Eli Harold,
Kentucky’s Bud Dupree, Washington’s Shaq Thompson and
Washington’s Hau’Oli Kikaha.
