2015 NFL Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Defensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
Defensive Linemen Bench Press Analysis:
USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams is in the
running to be selected in the first few picks of the first
round, but he did not participate in the bench press
at the Combine.
After Williams, the next defensive lineman to get
drafted is likely to be Washington nose tackle Danny
Shelton. The 6-foot-2, 339-pound Shelton cranked out 34
reps on the bench press. That tied Shelton for second to
only Northwestern State’s Deon Simon, who had 35. Shelton’s
total of 34 was one off from Aaron Donald’s total of 35
last year and two away from 2014’s leader Kaleb Ramsey from
Boston College.
Auburn defensive tackle Gabe Wright (6-3, 300) is
known as more of a speedy tackle, but he showed some power
in the weight room with 34 reps. That is an impressive
total from Wright, and it illustrates that his weight increase from
playing in the 280s was gained correctly.
Missouri outside linebacker/defensive end Shane Ray
had 21 reps on the bench press. Ray (6-4, 245) is smaller,
so that isn’t horrible, but it isn’t impressive either.
Oklahoma nose tackle Jordan Phillips has long arms,
and that is a disadvantage in the bench press. Phillips (6-5, 329) had 28 reps, which is a solid performance.
Florida State defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr.
(6-3, 279) showed about 15 pounds lighter than his listed
weight, but he displayed some nice strength as he
churned out 32 reps on the bench press. With his speed and
athleticism, Edwards could be a workout warrior from this
year’s class.
LSU defensive end Danielle Hunter (6-5, 252) is
undersized, but he showed respectable strength for his
weight with 25 reps on the bench press. Considering Hunter
is lighter, he could end up running one of the faster times
and being a Combine stand out.
Stanford defensive tackle David Parry (6-1, 308)
was one of the best players at the East-West Shrine, and he
continued his strong postseason at the Combine. Parry
totaled 34 reps on the bench press to illustrate his
strength. Parry is a sleeper who could be a nice value
pick.
Several good prospects did not bench. That group
included Florida State’s Eddie Goldman, Missouri’s Markus
Golden, Utah’s Nate Orchard, Iowa’s Carl Davis, Ohio
State’s Michael Bennett and Stanford’s Henry Anderson.
