Change Team:

This page lists all the 2024 Trades for the New England Patriots. I’ve listed all of the NFL Free Agent Signing Grades here, which included the trades. Because I’ve begun posting polls for the trades, I thought it would make sense to list just the NFL trades here, so archiving the voting would be easier.

October 2024 – Trades and Signings

Chiefs acquire DE/OLB Josh Uche from Patriots for 2026 6th-round pick
The future seemed extremely bright for Josh Uche when he recorded 11.5 sacks in 2022. He did so playing about a third of the team’s snaps, but he never developed beyond that, serving as just a situational edge rusher.

Despite this, I like the move for the Chiefs. Uche is still young (26), and it never hurts to add a player who can get to the quarterback when there are impending playoff battles against Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and C.J. Stroud. The Chiefs aren’t giving up much, so they’re the clear winners of this trade, whereas New England appears to be selling low.

August 2024 – Trades and Signings

Falcons acquire DE Matthew Judon from Patriots for 2025 3rd-round pick
The Falcons were heavily criticized for their No. 8 overall pick. They could have selected a talented pass rusher like Laiatu Latu, but instead drafted a quarterback for the future when they gave $100 million to Kirk Cousins two months earlier. They tried to make up for it with a third-round choice used on Bralen Trice, but Trice was recently ruled out for the year.

Atlanta had to do something about its poor pass rush, so it used a third-rounder this year to acquire Matthew Judon. This is a terrific trade for the Falcons, as it’ll give them a great presence on the edge to help them combat Jalen Hurts, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, and Brock Purdy. The one downside here is that Judon is 31, but given that the Falcons are in win-now mode, obtaining him makes a lot of sense.

This is a logical trade for the Patriots as well. They’re not ready to win now, so it makes sense for them to deal Judon in order to acquire more pieces for the future. Given that they didn’t have much leverage, a third-round pick for Judon is fair value.

Grade for Falcons – A-
Grade for Patriots – B+

March 2024 – Trades and Signings

Jaguars acquire QB Mac Jones from Patriots for 2024 6th-round pick
The Jaguars had a major problem late last year. Trevor Lawrence was dealing with so many injuries and playing through them that I called him the black knight from the Monty Python movie. Lawrence continued to take the field because the Jaguars didn’t have a viable backup quarterback, so they were doomed without him.

Mac Jones changes that. Jones had a rough 2023 campaign, but has shown in the past that he can be a solid game manager. He makes for a perfect backup, and it’s not out of the question that he can still be developed. Perhaps if the Jaguars coach him up, they can flip him for a fourth-round pick in the future.

The Patriots, meanwhile, did well to get something for Jones. They had no leverage with everyone knowing that they will be drafting a quarterback third overall, so getting a sixth for Jones is fine. This trade makes sense for both teams.
