2017 Fantasy Football Rankings - Running Backs (Sept. 6):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-75

  1. Doug Martin, RB, Buccaneers. Bye: 11.
AUG. 18 UPDATE: Doug Martin has endured an up-and-down career, but this year looks like an up for him. Martin will be suspended for three games, but he’s in excellent shape. He was terrific against the Jaguars, gaining 30 yards on five carries. He also caught two passes for 11 receiving yards.

JUNE 15 UPDATE: Doug Martin has been very explosive at Buccaneers OTAs, according to Jenna Laine, ESPN. Laine has tweeted numerous times about how impressive Martin has been. It’s not that surprising that Martin would rededicate himself after his lost 2016 campaign. He’s a nice bounce-back candidate.

Doug Martin predictably dogged it after signing a big contract. He struggled all year and then entered rehab. Everyone will be down on Martin, but now is the time to buy low. Reports indicate that Martin is in terrific shape, and the Buccaneers didn’t acquire anyone to steal touches from him.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 1,070 rushing yards. 23 catches. 160 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 171.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 194.

  2. Christian McCaffrey, RB, Panthers. Bye: 11.
Christian McCaffrey will split the running workload with Jonathan Stewart for the first year or two, so he’ll be a much more exciting PPR option in the early going. McCaffrey is likely to catch a ton of passes, as Cam Newton will aim to get McCaffrey involved rather than do almost everything himself. McCaffrey’s outlook will improve when Stewart moves on.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 50 catches. 440 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 164.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 214.

  3. Adrian Peterson, RB, Saints. Bye: 5.
JUNE 9 UPDATE: Adrian Peterson’s new teammates have gushed over how great he has looked at OTAs, per Nick Underhill, New Orleans Advocate. Peterson is clearly motivated following a lost 2016 season, so it’s reasonable to expect big things from him this year. Peterson is 32, and there have been running backs who have played on a high level into their 30s. Frank Gore, for example, just gained 1,000 rushing yards at the age of 33. Peterson will share touches with Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara, but he’s worth a shot with his fourth-round ADP.

Adrian Peterson missed most of the season with a knee injury. He played in just three games and averaged a horrific 1.9 yards per carry. He didn’t look the same after returning from his injury, but he wasn’t good in the first two games of the year, thanks to the awful play of the offensive line. Peterson is now 32, so his days of being an RB1 could be done. He’ll have better blocking in New Orleans, and he’ll have a top-tier quarterback taking the focus off him for the first time since Brett Favre, but it’s unclear what the running back rotation will be in New Orleans.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 910 rushing yards. 12 catches. 80 receiving yards. 9 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 153.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 165.

  4. Robert Kelley, RB, Redskins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Washington’s best offensive player in the dress rehearsal was Robert Kelley. He gained 57 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. He converted a third-and-1 early in the game, and then made a spin move on a 9-yard burst. More importantly, rookie Samaje Perine wasn’t very impressive, mustering only five yards on as many attempts.

AUG. 12 UPDATE: Robert Kelley was featured exclusively with the first-team offense in the preseason opener. He was stuffed on a third-and-1 on the second drive, but he also caught a pass and had a nice run of four yards to give his team some breathing room after Baltimore was pinned at the 1-yard line. More importantly for Kelley, Samaje Perine struggled immensely. Perine, who played with the backups, had an 11-yard run, but he screwed up a few times. He fumbled the ball, then dropped a pass on the very next play. He also blew a blocking assignment. Kelley appears to be the primary ball-carrier by a wide margin.

AUG. 4 UPDATE: It’s clear that Robert Kelley is the Redskins’ No. 1 running back, according to Master Tesfatsion, Washington Post. Jay Gruden prefers veteran runners, so the Samaje Perine hype train is unwarranted. Kelley will hold on to the job unless he begins fumbling too often.

JUNE 2 UPDATE: Robert Kelley has decreased his body fat from 18 to 13 percent, according to John Keim, ESPN. Kelley is “Fat Rob” no more! While many are anointing Samaje Perine as the Redskins’ starting running back, Kelley is doing everything in his power to fend the rookie off. Kelley’s current ADP is 5.11, which seems like solid value.

Robert Kelley was listed as a sleeper here last year, but it took him half the season to do anything. Kelley took over for the benched Matt Jones in Week 8, and finished with 704 yards on a 4.2 YPC average. The Redskins drafted Samaje Perine, but Kelley could still be the starter. Thus, Kelley could be a low-end RB2 or flex option.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 950 rushing yards. 18 catches. 120 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 149.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 167.

  5. Ty Montgomery, RB, Packers. Bye: 8.
AUG. 17 UPDATE: Ty Montgomery will miss the second preseason game. Jamaal Williams will work with the first team, which is a great opportunity for him to claim a good portion of the workload away from Montgomery. I think Montgomery is going way too early in fantasy mock drafts.

AUG. 11 UPDATE; Ty Montgomery didn’t have a good preseason debut. He was stuffed by Brandon Graham on his first run, and then he lost a fumble on his second carry. He was stuffed again on his third and final try. In total, his three carries went for zero yards. Meanwhile, rookie Jamaal Williams looked better, as he was actually able to move the pile on his runs. He managed 14 yards on five carries, looking good in the process. It’s quite possible that Montgomery and Williams could end up splitting the workload evenly.

Ty Montgomery did a great job filling in at running back in the wake of all the injuries at the position. The Packers added some rookies to challenge for the starting job, but it appears as though Montgomery will be the primary runner for now.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 45 catches. 350 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 149.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 194.

  6. Paul Perkins, RB, Giants. Bye: 8.
AUG. 22 UPDATE: Paul Perkins struggled against the Browns, mustering only 10 yards on six carries. It wasn’t surprising at all to see the Giants fail to run the ball effectively, as it’s been a long time since they’ve been able to put together a strong ground attack.

Paul Perkins didn’t see much action until Week 9, and from then on, he saw his workload increase each week. Perkins notched his first 100-yard game in Week 17. He’ll continue to grow as part of the Giants’ offense.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 810 rushing yards. 22 catches. 160 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 147.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 169.

  7. Mike Gillislee, RB, Patriots. Bye: 9.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: Mike Gillislee returned to practice fully Tuesday. Gillislee is finally over his hamstring, or so it seems. The Patriots have a complicated backfield where a running back will get most of the touches one week and disappear the next, based on the game plan. The one thing we do know is that Gillislee’s ADP is too high and Rex Burkhead’s is too low.

AUG. 10 UPDATE: Mike Gillislee has missed this past week with a hamstring injury. With Rex Burkhead rumored to get all of the touchdowns, Gillislee’s fantasy stock is pointing downward.

AUG. 5 UPDATE: Rex Burkhead has been getting the goal-line work at Patriots training camp, per Mike Giardi, CSN New England. Mike Gillislee is presumed to take the LeGarrette Blount role, but it sounds like that won’t completely be the case. Still, the situation seems like it’ll be in flux, as Bill Belichick is wont to change his rotation every week based on the matchups.

JUNE 6 UPDATE: Mike Gillislee has the inside track to be New England’s starting running back. Gillislee is the running back to own for fantasy purposes, as he’ll be taking LeGarrette Blount’s role in the red zone. Just keep in mind, however, that he could vanish for fumbling.

Bill Belichick has a long history of turning AFC East castoffs into stars. Will Mike Gillislee be next? It shouldn’t surprise anyone if that turned out to be the case. Gillislee could easily score double-digit touchdowns in 2017.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 880 rushing yards. 10 catches. 60 receiving yards. 7 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 146.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.

  8. Derrick Henry, RB, Titans. Bye: 8.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: Derrick Henry looked great in his preseason debut, and that continued to be the case in his second exhibition affair. Henry played way too late into the second quarter for my liking, but he was able to trample over Carolina’s starting defense. He converted a second-and-1 despite appearing to be stuffed in the backfield, and then he sprinted for a 17-yard run following an interception versus the No. 1 defense even though Marcus Mariota was no longer in the game. Henry finished with 36 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Given that DeMarco Murray is injury-prone, Henry is worth obtaining as a high-upside target.

Derrick Henry started seeing more of a workload toward the end of the season, and it’s fair to expect more carries from him in his second year. He has great upside, thanks to Tennessee’s terrific offensive line.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 18 catches. 140 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 145.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 163.

  9. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers. Bye: 11.
Jonathan Stewart ran behind a poor offensive line last season, which would explain why he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry. Stewart is now 30, so time is running out for him. Christian McCaffrey will eat into his workload as well, so it doesn’t appear as though Stewart is anything more than a RB3/flex at this point.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 780 rushing yards. 10 catches. 70 receiving yards. 8 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 143.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 153.

  10. Rex Burkhead, RB, Patriots. Bye: 9.
AUG. 21 UPDATE; Rex Burkhead saw most of the work with the starters because Mike Gillislee was out with a hamstring. Burkhead certainly did not disappoint. He gained 20 yards on seven carries, but did most of his damage as a receiver out of the backfield. He caught three passes for 50 receiving yards and a touchdown. He’s going to split touches with Gillislee, but Burkhead’s fantasy stock is definitely looking up.

There was a ton of Rex Burkhead hype this offseason before the Patriots traded for Mike Gillislee. I’d say Gillislee is the running back to own because of his touchdown potential. Burkhead could be a big contributor, though I’m sure it’ll be on a game-plan-specific basis.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 650 rushing yards. 34 catches. 260 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 142.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 176.

  11. Frank Gore, RB, Colts. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 5 UPDATE: One more update on Andrew Luck: It’s official now that Luck will be sidelined Week 1. The fact that the Colts ruled him out so early in the week suggests that he won’t be available Week 2 either. I would stay away from all Colt players unless they fall far in your draft.

SEPT. 1 UPDATE: Jim Irsay said Andrew Luck is “unlikely” to play Week 1. At this point, it’s more of a matter when Luck will be able to play rather than if he’ll suit up against the Rams. Tread carefully with Colts players, as Luck could miss several games and may not be 100 percent when he returns.

AUG. 27 UPDATE: Frank Gore did not look like a 34-year-old. He looked nimble for his age in the third preseason game, gaining 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries. It’s tough to trust Gore, who could wear down as the season progresses, but Gore looked like he could still have a number of decent fantasy performances remaining in the tank.

Frank Gore became the first running back, 33 years or older, to rush for 1,000 yards since John Riggins did it in 1984. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he’s 34 now, and unlikely to accomplish that feat again. The Colts drafted Marlon Mack, who could split the workload with Gore.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 850 rushing yards. 31 catches. 200 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 141.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 172.

  12. Tevin Coleman, RB, Falcons. Bye: 5.
Tevin Coleman would be an RB2 if it weren’t for Devonta Freeman. Coleman had 149 total touches (in 13 games) last year compared to Freeman’s 281 (in 16 games). Coleman is worth owning in all 12-team leagues because of his potential, plus he can be used as a bye-week streamer because he’ll handle the ball about 10-15 times per contest, and he’ll be in position to score touchdowns in Atlanta’s high-octane offense.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 600 rushing yards. 34 catches. 300 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 136.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 170.

  13. Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 14 UPDATE: Seattle’s running back rotation in the preseason opener saw Thomas Rawls work exclusively with the starters, and then Eddie Lacy enter the game with the reserves. Rawls gained five yards on two carries, while Lacy tallied 10 yards on four attempts. There have been reports about Rawls being ahead of Lacy, and that turned out to be the case. Yet, Lacy is being chosen much earlier in fantasy drafts for some reason. Rawls provides way more value. C.J. Prosise, meanwhile, didn’t see action until late in the second quarter. He had one carry for three yards and one catch for eight yards.

AUG. 10 UPDATE: Thomas Rawls appears to be the “clear” No. 1 running back right now, according to Bob Condotta, Seattle Times. While Eddie Lacy is being drafted much earlier than Rawls, it’s Rawls who appears to be favored to start right now. Rawls is a great value at his 9.11 ADP.

JUNE 10 UPDATE: Thomas Rawls has been explosive at OTAs. Rawls, highly motivated at blowing an opportunity last year, has been the top running back during Seahawks practices. Rawls at his 9.11 ADP is much more appealing than Eddie Lacy at 4.03. C.J. Prosise, meanwhile, is listed in the Fantasy Football Sleepers.

Thomas Rawls’ inability to stay healthy will mean that the Seahawks won’t rush to give him a big workload, especially considering that Eddie Lacy and C.J. Prosise are on the roster.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 750 rushing yards. 18 catches. 140 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 148.

  14. Mark Ingram, RB, Saints. Bye: 5.
Mark Ingram was benched in favor of Tim Hightower at one point in 2016 because of some fumbling issues, but he eventually re-took the job and performed on a high level. Ingram rushed for 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, and he also caught 46 balls for 319 receiving yards. He scored 10 touchdowns in the process. I would sell high on Ingram, however, as this was the first time he’s played all 16 games since 2012. Adrian Peterson’s presence also clouds his outlook.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 700 rushing yards. 30 catches. 210 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 160.

  15. Jamaal Williams, RB, Packers. Bye: 8.

The only running back Jamaal Williams has to pass on the depth chart is Ty Montgomery. He’ll get competition from fellow rookie Aaron Jones, but he has high upside as a late-round flier.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 670 rushing yards. 6 catches. 30 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 134.

  16. Matt Forte, RB, Jets. Bye: 11.
AUG. 21 UPDATE: Todd Bowles wouldn’t commit to Matt Forte being ready for Week 1. The worn-down Forte has been battling a hamstring injury. Forte was projected to be behind Bilal Powell anyway, so this is even less incentive to draft the old runner.

AUG. 4 UPDATE: Matt Forte has an injured hamstring. Like last year, Forte is already beat up before the season. Bilal Powell is the favorite to lead the team in touches.

Matt Forte was banged up at the end of last season and ultimately lost his job to Bilal Powell. Forte underwent minor knee surgery, and he happens to turn 32 in December. He’s no longer a starting fantasy running back, and if you draft him, you’ll have to watch him lose touches to Powell.

Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 610 rushing yards. 28 catches. 220 receiving yards. 5 total TDs.
    Projected 2010 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 156.

  17. Wendell Smallwood, RB, Eagles. Bye: 10.
AUG. 25 UPDATE: The scuttlebutt this week was that second-year running back Wendell Smallwood could overtake LeGarrette Blount as Philadelphia’s starting running back. Blount had an impressive 16-yard run against the Dolphins, but struggled otherwise. Smallwood, meanwhile, was far more impressive. His first preseason carry went for nine yards, and then he ran for six yards, though he could’ve gotten more had he shown good patience. Smallwood’s best burst was for a gain of 10, as he was able to break out of a tackle that would’ve limited him to just one yard. I don’t know if Smallwood (4 carries, 28 yards) is going to start over Blount, but he’s certainly going to be involved. He’s going to move up the charts in my Fantasy Football Sleepers list.

AUG. 21 UPDATE: Wendell Smallwood could win the Eagles’ starting running back job, according to Jimmy Kempski, Philly Voice. LeGarrette Blount has been pretty lackluster thus far, while Smallwood has been the best player at his position in training camp. Smallwood has no ADP, making him a very intriguing sleeper.

AUG. 10 UPDATE: Wendell Smallwood has been running like a “man possessed” in training camp, per Jimmy Kempski, Philly Voice. LeGarrette Blount is the favorite to lead the Eagles’ running backs in fantasy points, but don’t count out Smallwood. He’s someone I’ll be monitoring closely in the preseason, and if he keeps performing like he’s doing in training camp, I’ll recommend him as a late-round sleeper.

Wendell Smallwood takes the biggest hit in the wake of the LeGarrette Blount signing, as he was the logical starter prior to this move with Ryan Mathews on his way out.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 680 rushing yards. 14 catches. 100 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 141.

  18. Bilal Powell, RB, Jets. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 1 UPDATE: Bilal Powell started the preseason finale, but struggled to do anything against Philadelphia’s third-string defense. He carried the ball six times and gained just five yards. New York’s offensive line is pathetic, and it’s discouraging that the Jets were so willing to use Powell in such a meaningless game, while Matt Forte sat out.

AUG. 27 UPDATE: The third preseason game was a very disappointing night for Bilal Powell. Matt Forte handled the entire workload with the starters, and Powell wasn’t even seen until late in the second quarter. Forte actually had a nice game, gaining 43 yards on 10 carries. He was tackled in the end zone for a safety, but that wasn’t his fault; Jason Pierre-Paul exploded past Brandon Shell for the tackle for loss. Powell, meanwhile, was better – 32 yards on seven attempts along with four catches for 110 receiving yards and a touchdown – but he wasn’t even part of the offense until Forte was given a breather. Powell saw action deep into the third quarter, which is very discouraging. Powell is a superior player compared to Forte, so the usage is very puzzling.

Bilal Powell proved to be the better running back on the Jets this past season. He eventually took over as the starter toward the end of the season, and he definitely outplayed Matt Forte. Powell gained 722 yards and caught 58 passes in 2016. Powell can be used as a flex option, especially in PPR leagues.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 590 rushing yards. 60 catches. 440 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.

  19. C.J. Prosise, RB, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 23 UPDATE: C.J. Prosise strained his groin in warmups prior to the second preseason game. This is frustrating because soft-tissue injuries linger, plus Prosise couldn’t stay healthy last year. I like Prosise as a late-round sleeper, but he certainly has his downside.

C.J. Prosise barely saw action last year. In his only full game, he tallied 153 total yards at New England. The following week, he ripped off 76 rushing yards on just four carries against the Eagles, but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the process. Prosise is a dynamic talent who will be a flex at the very least as long as he stays healthy. It’s unclear what his durability is, however, but he’s definitely a hit-or-miss fantasy option. It also hurts that Eddie Lacy is on the team to plunge into the end zone and handle the early-down work.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 470 rushing yards. 44 catches. 460 receiving yards. 4 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.

  20. Terrance West, RB, Ravens. Bye: 10.
AUG. 12 UPDATE: The Ravens have some issues with their offensive line, but that didn’t prevent Terrance West from bursting for an 18-yard gain in the preseason opener. The run featured a breathtaking juke of a safety. West was stuffed at the goal line on the next play, but scored right after that when he leapt over the pile. West finished with 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries. His only real blemish during the evening was a dropped pass, but he performed well otherwise.

JULY 26 UPDATE: Terrance West gets a stock up for Kenneth Dixon being out for the year, but there’s a good chance the Ravens sign someone or trade for Carlos Hyde, so don’t get carried away.

Terrance West was given far too many carries last year when it was obvious that Kenneth Dixon was the better talent. West will be a non-factor this year once Dixon returns from his four-game suspension.

Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 750 rushing yards. 21 catches. 150 receiving yards. 6 total TDs.
    Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 147.
