2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Draft Week Questions II
How do you realistically see Percy Harvin dropping to the third round? His alleged marijuana charges are not going to drop his draft stock that much. Listening to talk radio and ESPN, they are comparing him to what we expected Reggie Bush to be; a player who can go behind center, line up in the slot or far out. Percy Harvin will be a first-round pick.
My Response:
Percy Harvin wasn’t a first-round pick before the marijuana charge. He’s way too injury-prone and raw as a receiver. You should read this blog entry because it’s more than just weed: Percy Harvin’s Draft Stock Dropping.
What’s your opinion on the possiblity of Sanchez going to Seattle.. Do you think it’s a smoke screen so they can deal the pick or do you think they have legit interest in him?
My Response:
I think it’s definitely a smokescreen by someone. I can’t see the Seahawks taking Mark Sanchez. Seattle has all of these veterans and it’s trying to win now. Why would Tim Ruskell draft someone for the future and pay a second quarterback a lot of money? It just doesn’t make any sense to me.
I’m willing to bet that either the Rams or the Chiefs are leaking this information, hoping someone dumb (i.e. Daniel Snyder) moves up to Nos. 2 or 3 to jump ahead of Seattle.
Geez man, you have players with 2nd-4th round grades going in the seventh round… stick to guessing the first round.
My Response:
Last year, everyone had Carl Nicks in the first round. He fell to the fifth round. Everyone had Justin King in the second. He went in the fourth. Andre Woodson was a Round 2-4 player. He went Round 6. Josh Barrett was projected Round 3-4. He went Round 7. Wesley Woodyard was projected Round 3-4. He was undrafted!
Don’t pigeon-hole prospects into a certain area. Unexpected things happen on Draft Day, especially in Rounds 3-7.
It seems like every mock has the Bears taking a WR with their first pick in the second round. I understand the need to get Jay Cutler some more weapons, but it seems like Chicago is suddenly in win-now mode. Considering that rookie receivers generally don’t produce right away, and the fact that there are still several veteran receivers available in free agency, wouldn’t they be better off by signing a guy like Torry Holt or Shaun McDonald (note: this e-mail was sent before the Holt signing) and then drafting a safety or defensive end? We saw in Denver how Cutler’s value can be marginalized by a weak defense…
My Response:
What makes you say the Bears are in a win-now mode? They traded for Jay Cutler, but he’s only 25. Plus, there were three rookie receivers – DeSean Jackson, Eddie Royal and Donnie Avery – who produced last year. If Chicago finds the right guy, the team could have a reliable wideout across from Devin Hester in 2009. Regardless, the Bears have a ton of options, so I do think there are a lot of possibilities, though going wideout in Round 2 could be lucrative for the Bears.
