2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Broncos, Lions, Dolphins

  • From David E.:

If Raji falls in the draft Denver will grab him, however, I think you’re right that Green Bay will take him and Denver will take Rey Rey (which I’m not a huge fan of). However, in the second round you have them taking Fili Moala, which is a solid choice but I think they will look for Ron Brace if Raji wasn’t their first round pick.

The reason for this, in Emmit terms, is Denver don’t have a big dude in their new 3-4. The biggest DT they have is Marcus Thomas who is 305 and unless he gains 15-20 pounds he will play DE. Even if Thomas gains the pounds and plays NT where’s the depth? What solid FA signing is there for a NT right now? Therefore Denver will look to the draft to fill the NT position.

    My Response:

Good point on Ron Brace. I think there’s a very good chance they take him. I have Fili Moala rated higher than Brace, so it depends on how much the Broncos like the two guys. There’s also free agency, so maybe they find a nose tackle there. A lot of things can happen from now until the end of April.

I agree with what you said on Raji. There’s no way he’s getting to Denver. Unfortunately, Jacksonville, Green Bay and San Francisco will all be looking at him.

  • From Mike D.:

I have a friend that likes to argue with me about the Lions draft prospects. I convinced him that Stafford is the right choice at #1, but we still disagree about what they should do at #20.

I say they should take an OT, reach or not. Whether it be Beatty or Britton or somebody who falls.

He says they need to take defense with that pick. He specifically wants Cushing, while I would take Laurinaitis if he is available, if we go defense.

My question to you is, should they go defense or OT or something else? And whom should they take specifically?

    My Response:

Detroit’s defense needs to be fixed, but I believe it all starts up front. If the Lions take a quarterback, they need to protect him. Offensive linemen are in such high demand right now that teams are going to be reaching all throughout the draft. If the Lions don’t take a lineman at No. 20, there might not be anyone of starting quality available at No. 33.

  • From Dave K.:

Depending on what happens in frre agency, you might want to take a closer look at a guard going to the ‘phins in round 1. They were very excited about Donald Thomas before he got hurt. Between him and Smiley, I dont think spending a round 1 pick on a guard is in the cards. Parcells likes to pick up big guards later in the draft. although, if they do not resign Vernon Carey, they might look for a Tackle.

My frustration watching the Dolphins this year was not having a go to guy a WR and the spotty secondary. I think that a corner or safety is a top priority even if they sign Asomugha, and with a sparse crop of free agents, drafting a WR might be their only option.

    My Response:

I think you’re right about Donald Brown, but Justin Smiley is the problem. Smiley has a long history of injury issues and was once again hurt in ’08. The Dolphins can’t rely on him next year; they need to find a replacement for him.

I agree with your assessment that the Dolphins need a receiver and corner. I have those positions being addressed in the first three rounds. We’ll also have to see what happens in free agency.

  • From Conrad A.:

How the hell do you have the Broncos taking positions of need in the first 3 rounds? What kind of idiot are you? Jeez….

Don’t you know that half the mock drafters out there have the Broncos taking a RB at the 12th pick? You know that HAS to be the pick because their coach is a run first, pass second offensive mind. Oh, I’m sorry he’s a pass first, run second dude that had Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, LaMont Jordan and BenJarvis Green-Ellis as the primary running backs in his rushing offense that 6th ranked in the league. I will bet my complete set of Laurence Maroney rookie cards that the Broncos won’t address their completely debacled defense in the first 3 rounds of the draft.

    My Response:

You should make that wager to Matt. He still has Moreno going to the Broncos. If you lose, you won’t be losing much because those Maroney rookie cards are dropping in value by the second, though I think you still might be able to get a Herman Edwards motivational DVD on eBay for the lot.
