2014 NFL Combine: Stock Report – Defensive Backs

Tre Boston, S, North Carolina
Tre Boston didn’t post the best numbers, but a 4.59 40 for a 6-foot, 204-pound safety is fine enough. Boston handled himself well in the drills, which is far more important. We reported earlier that the Packers are interested in Boston. Check out the 2014 NFL Draft Rumors page for more.

Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State
Lamarcus Joyner was the Florida State defensive back who came into the Combine with more acclaim, but Terrence Brooks was the one who stood out. Brooks ran a 4.42 40 to go along with a 38-inch vertical. Brooks performed extremely well in the field drills as well. He really helped his cause to be drafted on Day 2.

Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
Deone Bucannon’s 4.49 official 40 for a 6-1, 211-pound safety is exceptional. Bucannon also posted some other impressive numbers (36.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-5 broad jump). Bucannon has a shot to be a second-round selection.

Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
It was once debatable which cornerback would be chosen first. Justin Gilbert zoomed past Darqueze Dennard in Indianapolis. While Gilbert was awesome – more on that later – Dennard posted a 4.51 40, which isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t help that his long speed was already questioned. Dennard is just 5-11, so that hurts his cause. Dennard also struggled in the drills, as he appeared pretty tight at times.

Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Some consider Kyle Fuller a first-round prospect. He certainly looked like one at the Combine. Fuller (6-0, 190) ran a decent 40 at 4.49, but his most impressive numbers were when he leapt (38.5-inch vertical; 10-8 broad jump). Fuller wasn’t one of the better defensive backs in the field drills, but he held his own and was solid overall.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice
Phillip Gaines entered the Combine as a late-round prospect, but he put himself on the map by posting some impressive measureables. Gaines (6-0, 193) ran a 4.38, notched a 36.5-inch vertical and registered a 10-2 broad jump. Gaines looked decent in the drills, so perhaps he enticed some team to consider him early on Day 3.

Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
Justin Gilbert had an amazing Combine. It started back on Sunday when his arms measured at 33 1/8 inches. He then posted 20 bench reps the following day. He thrived most on Tuesday, however. He tied for the best 40 time among all defensive backs with a 4.37. He also had a 35.5-inch vertical and a 10-6 broad jump. Gilbert was at his best in the drills though. He looked extremely smooth, and just by watching him, it was apparent that he was clearly way above any defensive back out there. Gilbert could go as high as No. 8 to Minnesota.

Victor Hampton, CB, South Carolina
No one likes short and slow corners. Victor Hampton, who is only 5-foot-9, ran a horrific 4.69 40-yard dash. Combine that with his off-the-field troubles, and Hampton could tumble deep into Day 3.

Keith McGill, CB, Utah
Some team looking to copy Seattle’s style of defense will take Keith McGill early. McGill is a 6-foot-3 corner with great length (33 1/4 inches). He ran a 4.51 and also posted a 39-inch vertical as well as a 10-foot-9 broad jump. McGill looked very athletic in the drills.

Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The one number that sticks out for Loucheiz Purifoy, only because it’s so small, was his six bench press reps. But that doesn’t matter as much as his 4.61 40, which really hurts him because he’s not six feet tall (5-11, 190). Purifoy was sloppy and stiff in the field drills, so his draft stock definitely took a major hit.

Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
Florida’s strength-and-conditioning program needs to be upgraded, as Marcus Roberson notched only eight reps on the bench. He wasn’t as bad in the drills, but his 40 was just as poor as Purifoy’s (4.61). Roberson was injured for most of 2013, so you have to wonder if his time would’ve been better if he had enough time to train. Given that, Roberson’s decision to declare early is looking like a dubious one.

Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
Bradley Roby entered the 2013 season as a top-10 prospect, but his stock plummeted because of some awful film. Roby took a step toward rehabilitating his stock. He ran a very impressive 4.39 40 along with a 1.47 10-yard split. Roby also recorded a 38.5-inch vertical and a 10-4 broad jump. Roby handled himself well in the field drills.

Brock Vereen, S, Minnesota
Brock Vereen is a third-day prospect who definitely stood out at the Combine. In addition to looking fluid in the drills, Vereen registered a 4.47 40 with a 1.50 10-yard split.

Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
Jason Verrett is a small corner (5-9, 189), so he needed a great 40 to help mitigate his size. Not only did he accomplish his goal (4.38 with a 1.47 10-yard split); he also thrived in the field drills. To top it off, Verrett’s vertical (39) and broad jump (10-8) were both exceptional.
