2014 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Recap – Quarterbacks
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • The quarterback who helped himself the most at the weigh in was Central Florida’s Blake Bortles. He checked in at 6-foot-5, 232-pounds. That is excellent size for an NFL quarterback and really separates Bortles from Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater. Bortles has ideal size to be a pocket passer. He has an arm to throw well on the field work and the mobility to do well in the field drills. Bortles could be one of the standouts of the Combine.

  • Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater needed to hit 200 pounds at the weigh in to address concerns around the NFL about his frame. Sources told WalterFootball.com that they were worried that Bridgewater didn’t have the bulk to stay healthy once the hits from NFL defensive linemen started adding up. Well, at 6-foot-2, 214 pounds, Bridgewater eased those concerns. It would be good if he could end up in the 220s.

  • Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel measured in shorter than anticipated. The 5-foot-11, 207-pound Manziel was two inches shorter than his listed height by the Aggies, but he was seven pounds heavier. Manziel is around expectations; scouts knew that he wasn’t 6-foot-1 like Texas A&M claimed. Manziel being over 200 pounds was important. Surprisingly, Manziel had bigger hands (9 7/8) than Bortles (9 3/8) or Bridgewater (9 1/4).

  • Both of the Tennessee offensive tackles showed excellent size at the weigh-in. Left tackle Antonio Richardson (6-6, 336) and right tackle Ju’wuan James (6-6, 311) both have 35-inch arms. Richardson enters the Combine as a potential first-round pick, while James could go early on Day 2.

  • Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron (6-3, 220) was an inch shorter and six pounds heavier than his listed numbers. McCarron has solid measurements, but his throwing ability is the biggest question mark. McCarron doesn’t have a very strong arm and didn’t have to fit a lot of throws into tight windows. After skipping the Senior Bowl, McCarron was smart to change his mind and throw at the Combine.

  • LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger (6-5, 224) was almost exactly as billed. His height was accurate and he was six pounds lighter. Unfortunately, Mettenberger’s late-season ACL tear will keep him from working out at the Combine.

  • Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas (6-5, 250) is one of the wild cards in the draft. Thomas has the largest hands of any quarterback at 10 7/8. With size, strength, athleticism and quickness Thomas should be a Combine standout.

  • West Texas A&M quarterback Dustin Vaughan (6-5, 235) and Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch (6-0, 217) tied for the smallest hands among the quarterbacks at 8 7/8. Lynch would be better off switching positions to have a shot at an NFL career.

  • North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner (6-3, 228) had the accurate height, but he was 13 pounds heavier than his listed numbers. Renner needs to impress teams in the lead up to the draft to make sure he gets drafted.
