2014 NFL Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Running Backs
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
To put these numbers in context, Kansas City Chiefs running back Knile Davis led all running backs with 31 reps on the bench press last year.
Georgia Southern running back Jerick McKinnon led all the running backs with 32 reps on the bench press. The 5-foot-9, 209-pounder isn’t a big back, so it was an extremely impressive total. The thickly built McKinnon is also a speedy back, so he could end up having a great Combine performance.
Washington running back Bishop Sankey had 26 reps on the bench and was second among the halfbacks. The 5-foot-9, 209-pounder showed that he has built up some good strength and body armor in his frame. Sankey also checked in with large hands (10 inches), so his Combine is off to a good start.
Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde put up a smaller total for a power back. Hyde (5-11, 230) had 19 reps, and as a point of reference, last year Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard put up 19 reps. Bernard is smaller speed back who was 30 pounds lighter. That was a decent total for Bernard but a somewhat underwhelming total for Hyde. At his pro day, Hyde needs to help himself by producing a better total.
Hyde’s total of 19 was matched by Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey. With 19 reps, Carey (5-9, 207) proved that he has strength to his frame. The speedy Carey could excel in the field work.
LSU running back Jeremy Hill is one of the top backs in the draft class, yet he only totaled one more rep than Hyde. With 20 reps, Hill (5-11, 230) was underwhelming considering he’s a big back. Hill needs to improve on that number at his pro day.
Kent State running back/wide receiver Dri Archer put up a huge total for a player of his size. The 5-foot-8, 173-pounder was able to manage 20 reps; one more than Carlos Hyde, who has over 50 pounds on Archer. Showing that kind of strength will help mitigate the size and durability concerns with Archer.
Oklahoma fullback Trey Millard would have been second-day pick if he hadn’t torn an ACL during the season. Millard (6-2, 247) showed that he hasn’t gone lax on his upper body training as he popped out 32 reps. Last year, Wake Forest’s Tommy Bohanon led the fullbacks with 36 reps, so Millard put up a respectable number.
Colorado State running back Kapri Bibbs had 24 reps, which tied him for third. Bibbs (5-9, 212) has a nice combination of quickness and strength. He could end up being a nice value pick and is a candidate to be this year’s Alfred Morris or Zac Stacy.
