2014 NFL Combine: Stock Report – Running Backs
Dri Archer, RB, Kent State
Dri Archer had Chris Johnson worried. Archer nearly broke Johnson’s NFL Combine record in the 40-yard dash (4.24) with a 4.26. That alone wouldn’t give Archer a “stock up,” but as Charlie noted in the Running Backs Field Drills Recap, “Archer showed nice fluid athletic ability with change-of-direction skills. He had loose hips to change direction on a dime. Archer gave NFL evaluators something to think about as a situational weapon on offense.” Archer could prove to be an intriguing weapon.
Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Ka’Deem Carey had one of the slower 40 times of all the halfbacks at the NFL Combine (4.70). His jumping numbers were mediocre. He also didn’t stand out in the field drills. Carey was a second-round prospect heading into Indianapolis, but he may slip into Round 3 now.
Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
This is a small up arrow for Tre Mason, who may have passed Ka’Deem Carey to be the No. 2 running back in this class. Mason’s 40 was fine (4.50), but he thrived most in the field drills. He was great in most aspects, including his change of direction and receiving ability.
Jerick McKinnon, RB, Georgia Southern
Jerick McKinnon blazed a 4.41 official 40 and also posted impressive jumping numbers (40.5 vertical, 11-0 broad). He also thrived in the field drills, as Tony Pauline discussed in the NFL Combine Rumors page: “How impressive was Jerick McKinnon’s workout yesterday? Its likely to improve his draft stock anywhere from two-to-three rounds. This morning sources told me they feel McKinnon has cemented himself as a fourth-round pick and could break into the third frame. A few teams now rate McKinnon as the fifth running back on their boards.”
Silas Redd, RB, USC
Silas Redd had a disappointing 2013 campaign, so he needed a strong Combine performance to rebound. His 40 time hurt him even more, as he ran a poor 4.70 at just 5-10, 212.
Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Lache Seastrunk’s official 4.51 40 was just OK, but what talent evaluators wanted to see most out of him was his ability to catch the ball, since he didn’t do that very much in Baylor’s system. Some thought Seastrunk would struggle in this regard, but he did a very good job in the receiving drills. He ran solid routes and showed good hands.
James Wilder, RB, Florida State
Many thought James Wilder should have stayed at school. He could have used the extra time preparing for the Combine. He got off to a poor start with a horrible 4.86 official 40 time. It got worse in the field drills, especially when he was asked to catch passes. Wilder may go undrafted.
Andre Williams, RB, Boston College
As with Lache Seastrunk, Andre Williams had to prove to NFL personnel that he could function as a receiver coming out of the backfield, given that he didn’t catch a single pass during the 2013 season. Seastrunk thrived in this area, but Williams struggled immensely. Williams looks like a Shonn Greene clone, and that’s definitely not a good thing.
