2014 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Recap – Linebackers
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr showed up bigger than expected at 6-foot-5, 255-pounds. He was an inch taller and seven pounds heavier than anticipated. At those numbers, Barr will give 4-3 teams something to think about as a hybrid defensive end and outside linebacker. The weigh-in was a great start for Barr.

  • Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack has been getting some media push to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Mack (6-3, 251) was the accurate height and six pounds heavier than his listed numbers. That is a superb weigh-in for Mack, and if can run well on the field, that will only serve to confirm his status as a top-10 pick.

  • Ohio State outside linebacker Ryan Shazier (6-1, 237) was an inch shorter than his listed height, but more important than that was Shazier weighing 10 pounds heavier. The concerns with Shazier was related to his weight and strength. Playing in the 230s is enough for Shazier to be an outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense.

  • Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley (6-2, 234) was his exact measurements from college. It was good that Mosley didn’t check in any smaller than expectations.

  • UConn linebacker Yawin Smallwood (6-2, 246) had significantly different numbers than his listed numbers of 6-4, 236. Smallwood’s weight was a bonus, but being shorter is slightly disappointing as he doesn’t have the perceived length he had before. Smallwood is in the running to be a second-day pick, and don’t be surprised if he’s a Combine stand out.

  • Stanford linebacker Shayne Skov (6-2, 245) was an inch shorter, but the same height as his listed weight. Skov has good numbers to be an inside linebacker in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense.

  • Arizona State linebacker Carl Bradford (6-1, 250) checked in seven pounds heavier than his listed weight. That is an interesting weight gain for Bradford because it will appeal to 3-4 teams, but probably will be disappointing to 4-3 squads. Bradford’s best fit could come in a 3-4 defense as a hybrid inside and outside linebacker.

  • Florida outside linebacker Ron Powell (6-3, 237) was smaller than expected by an inch and about 10 pounds. Powell is small by 3-4 outside linebacker standards. He probably dropped weight for the Combine, but he will probably need to add weight for the NFL if he’s taken by a 3-4 team, which looked like his best fit from his college play.
