2014 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Tight Ends
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
As a point of reference, the average for the tight ends was 4.78 seconds in the 40-yard dash two years ago.
Everyone expected North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron (6-4, 250) to blow up the Combine, and he did just that. He ran both of his 40-yard dash times at 4.5 unofficially, and the official times came in at 4.6, which was good for second among tight ends. He pulled a hamstring on the second run and as a result he sat out the field drills. While it wasn’t a complete performance, Ebron did enough to help himself.
Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro (6-5, 265) had two times that were slightly disappointing at 4.66 an 4.62, but Amaro plays faster than those times. Amaro had a couple of drops in the field drills and didn’t run some good routes. It was a disappointing day for Amaro, but he has a lot of good tape and the Combine doesn’t illustrate what makes him special.
Former Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla was known to be a great athlete. Lyerla (6-4, 242) had the third-fastest 40 time at 4.60. Lyerla juggled catch in the field drills and had a drop, but he did put his athleticism on display in route-running. In the vertical jump, he showed the most explosion of the tight ends with a leap of 36.5 inches. Lyerla needed a strong Combine performance to help mitigate the damage of all his off-the-field exploits, and the results were just OK. Lyerla’s interviews will be the most important part of his time in Indianapolis.

Tennessee State tight end A.C. Leonard (6-2, 252) had the fastest 40 time at the Combine at 4.5 seconds. He also showed nice agility in his route-running with some hands. Leonard has a lot of off-the-field issues that caused him to leave Florida’s program after being a top recruit, but there is no doubt that Leonard has a lot of athletic ability. Leonard made the argument for teams to think of him on the third day of the draft.
Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Notre Dame tight end Troy Niklas both didn’t run the 40-yard dash. Seferian-Jenkins had a foot injury, while Niklas’ injury was said to be a groin. Niklas did work out in the position drills and looked pretty good at less than 100 percent.
Two tight ends who looked good in the field drills were Iowa’s C.J. Fiedorowicz and USC’s Xavier Grimble. Fiedorowicz ran pretty well in the 40 with a time of 4.76 seconds, sixth rated among the tight ends. Grimble didn’t run the 40, but showed his athleticism in the receiving drills. Both Fiedorowicz and Grimble could be nice values in the mid-rounds.
