2015 NFL Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Offensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
Offensive Linemen Bench Press Analysis:
The most impressive bench press total belonged to Miami left tackle Ereck Flowers. He led all the offensive linemen with 37 reps. Flowers (6-6, 329) plays with a lot of power, and his bench press total is even more impressive considering he has long arms (34 4/8 inches). Flowers could be on his way to being the star of the Combine along the offensive line.
Pittsburgh offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings (6-4, 309) is a favorite of many media analysts, but he had struggles at the Senior Bowl. Clemmings didn’t do all that well at the Combine bench press either, recording 22 reps. Not only is that a lot less than the leader in Flowers, but it falls short of the first-round tackles from last year. Greg Robinson (32), Jake Matthews (24), Taylor Lewan (29), and Zack Martin (29) all did better. It isn’t a huge deal, but it continues to illustrate that Clemmings needs development.
Iowa’s Brandon Scherff was a powerful run-blocker in college, so it was surprising that he only had 23 reps. Scherff (6-5, 319) also has shorter arms (33 3/8 inches), so that is an advantage in the bench press. Compared to a tackle like Flowers, or the first-round prospects from last year, Scherff’s total is mildly disappointing.
LSU offensive tackle La’el Collins (6-4, 305) also had a disappointing total with only 21 reps. He doesn’t have particularly long arms (33 2/8 inches) to hold him back either. There have been allegations that Collins isn’t a hard worker, and his bench press performance would some credence to that criticism.
Florida State tackle/guard/center Cameron Erving (6-5, 313) had an impressive total of 30 reps. Erving (34 1/8 inches) also has long arms, so his total was impressive. It wouldn’t be surprising if Erving does well in the field drills and gives his stock a real boost from the Combine.
After tearing his ACL in his bowl game, Texas A&M left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi (6-5, 306) is only taking part in the bench press at the Combine. He had 23 reps, which isn’t that impressive, but considering he’s been concentrating on rehabbing his knee, it isn’t that bad. Plus, Ogbuehi has very long arms at 35 7/8 inches, so in the context of all of that Ogbuehi’s performance is respectable. The tape catalog illustrates that Ogbuehi does need to add strength to sustain his blocks.
A lot of the top-tier guard prospects didn’t participate. Thus, Duke guard Laken Tomlinson had an opportunity to impress. Tomlinson (6-3, 323) had a decent performance with 25 reps. He benefits by others not participating.
South Carolina guard A.J. Cann was solid with 26 reps. After missing out on the Senior Bowl, Cann (6-3 313) could use a strong Combine to help him stand out in the guard class.
One of the most surprising totals came from Wisconsin right tackle Rob Havenstein. He had shockingly low total of only 16. Considering Havenstein (6-7, 321) was a power run-blocker for Badgers, his bench press total is a head scratcher. He struggled at the Senior Bowl as well. It appears that Havenstein needs to turn some fat into muscle for the next level.
Similar to Havenstein, Alabama right tackle Austin Shepherd (6-4, 315) did poorly with only 17 reps. He has extremely short arms (32 7/8 inches) that should’ve helped him in the bench press. Shepherd will probably have to move to guard and is a late-rounder.
Auburn center Reese Dismukes (6-3, 296) had quality showing with 23 reps. He has was helped by having short arms (32 4/8 inches). But considering Dismukes is a lighter center, that is pretty solid.
Colorado State left tackle Ty Sambrailo illustrated at the Senior Bowl that he needs to add power for the NFL. That was given further proof in the Combine bench press. Sambrailo (6-6, 311) had only 23 reps despite having short arms to assist him (33 inches). The Senior Bowl and Combine could be illustrating that Sambrailo isn’t a fit as an NFL left tackle.
The Oklahoma duo of left tackle Tyrus Thompson (6-5, 324) and right tackle Daryl Williams (6-5, 327) had decent totals of 29 and 27 respectively. Both Sooners have long arms as well. Thompson and Williams gave proof that they are regulars in the weight room.
It was disappointing that Stanford left tackle Andrus Peat (6-7, 313) didn’t participate in the bench press. I was curious to get a gauge on his weight room participation rate, but that answer won’t come from the Combine.
There were a other notable prospects who didn’t participate. This group included: Florida State guard Josue Matias, Florida State guard Tre Jackson, Alabama guard Arie Kouandjio, Florida center Max Garcia and Oregon center Hroniss Grasu.
