2015 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Tight Ends
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
Minnesota’s Maxx Williams is the consensus top
tight end prospect and looks like a future second-round
pick. Williams had a surprisingly slow time on his first
40-yard dash run of 4.90 with a 10-yard split of 1.74. He
bounced back with a time of 4.78 seconds on the redo. In
the field drills, Williams had some nice catches along the
sideline and did well in the gauntlet, especially on the
second rep. Williams had a solid Combine, but didn’t do
enough to vault himself into first-round consideration.
Florida State tight end Nick O’Leary had a
disappointing run in the 40-yard dash with two times of 4.93
seconds officially. O’Leary was expected to run faster, perhaps in the
4.7-second range. In the field drills, O’Leary did better, as he
showed natural, soft hands in the gauntlet and ran his
routes well. It was a mixed Combine for O’Leary.
Miami’s Clive Walford doesn’t have elite speed, but
he has soft hands, and that was visible in the field work.
Walford had the fourth-fastest 40 time at 4.79 seconds,
officially. He did a nice job of running routes and
catching passes in the field drills. After the Combine and
a great Senior Bowl, Walford looks like a solid third-round
pick.
The fastest official time for any tight end came
from Southern Illinois’ MyCole Pruitt at 4.58 seconds. That will help
him to stand out in this weak class. However, Pruitt wasn’t
impressive in the field drills and looks like he needs
development.
South Alabama’s Wes Saxton was expected to perform
well, as he has a nice mix of speed and athleticism. Saxton
ran the second-fastest 40 at 4.65 seconds. There is no
doubt that he has a skill set, but Saxton will need
development.
Oklahoma quarterback-turned-tight end Blake Bell
had a respectable 4.80 time in the 40. Bell has good size
to him and can catch the ball, but he’ll need work at his
new position after spending the majority of his collegiate
career at quarterback.
