2015 Combine: Bench Press Recap Defensive Backs

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • Last year’s defensive backs were led by Brock Vereen (25). Here were some other players of note with Justin Gilbert (20), Darqueze Dennard (15), Calvin Pryor (18), Haha Clinton-Dix (11), Jimmie Ward (9) and Bradley Roby (17).

  • The best performance at the Combine bench press for the defensive backs came from USC safety/cornerback Josh Shaw. He ripped off 26 reps. At the all-star games, it was obvious that Shaw (6-0, 201) is built up and very strong. Aside from his big off-the-field issues, his speed and movement are the biggest questions to answer for his future NFL position.

  • The consensus top cornerback in the 2015 NFL Draft is Michigan State’s Trae Waynes. The 6-foot, 186-pound Waynes cranked out 19 reps on the bench press. That is a quality number and illustrates that he’s committed to the weight room.

  • Ohio State cornerback Doran Grant (5-10, 200) had an impressive performance on the bench press as well with 20 reps. He could interest some teams as a safety.

  • There were a lot of disappointing totals on the bench press. Among them was Florida State cornerback P.J. Williams. Scouts have raved about his size before, but Williams (6-0, 194) didn’t illustrate he has serious strength with a total of 12.

  • Seminoles teammate Ronald Darby (5-11, 193) also disappointed with 12 reps. Darby is put together pretty well also, so it was surprising that this Florida State duo didn’t perform better.

  • Central Florida safety Clayton Geathers had one of the biggest totals with 22 reps. Geathers (6-2, 218) is a strong safety prospect and his total illustrates he’s no stranger to the weight room.

  • TCU cornerback Kevin White (5-9, 183) is a small nickel-corner prospect, but he was impressive on the bench press. He powered out 18 reps, which is an impressive total for a defensive back his size. A lot of bigger corners didn’t come close to that total. Similarly, Texas cornerback Quandre Diggs (5-9, 196) had 17 reps.

  • Utah cornerback/safety Eric Rowe (6-1, 205) was impressive with 19 reps. Rowe had a strong Senior Bowl as well.

  • Oregon State cornerback Steven Nelson helped himself at the Senior Bowl and continued that on the Combine bench press with 19 reps. Nelson (5-10, 197) is put together well.

  • Miami’s Ladarius Gunter (6-1, 202) has size for a corner, but he had a disappointing total of 12. One would think that Gunter would have done better.

  • Ole Miss safety Cody Prewitt has been an overrated prospect. He had only 11 reps on the bench press. That was third to last, and for a safety who is 6-foot-2, 208-pounds, it was very disappointing.

  • The worst performances on the bench press came from Clemson’s Garry Peters (6-0, 191), who had only seven reps, and Tulane’s Lorenzo Doss with nine.

  • There were a huge number of notable defensive backs who didn’t participate in the bench press. That group included Alabama safety Landon Collins, LSU cornerback Jalen Collins, Syracuse safety Durell Eskridge, Central Florida cornerback Jacoby Glenn, Michigan State safety Kurtis Drummond, Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson, Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt, Georgia cornerback Damian Swann, Fresno State safety Derron Smith, Louisville safety James Sample, Louisville cornerback Charles Gaines and Penn State safety Adrian Amos.
