2016 NFL Combine: Field Drills Recap – Offensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
For a point of reference, the average 40 times for interior offensive linemen at the combine in 2013 and 2014 were 5.36 seconds and 5.21 seconds, respectively; offensive tackles typically run a little bit. In the 10-yard split, the average times for interior offensive linemen were 1.79 seconds in 2013 and 1.80 seconds in 2012. In 2015, the average time for an offensive tackle was 5.25 seconds.
Ole Miss left tackle Laremy Tunsil decided not to run the 40-yard dash, but he did work out in the field drills at the combine. Tunsil (6-5, 310) showed off that he is a smooth athlete with tremendous feet, hips, and knee bend. Not only was Tunsil more athletic than the other linemen, he was very fast and explosive. His kick slide was phenomenal. He is just a different level of athlete compared to the other prospects.
It is very common for high first-rounders to not run the 40 and Tunsil is the favorite to be the first-overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Teams will have to wait for Tunsil’s pro day for his 40, but in the field work, he showed why he rated so high and considered to be such a rare prospect.
Notre Dame left tackle Ronnie Stanley represented himself well. Stanley (6-5, 312) had an official time of 5.13 seconds, which was good – and better than average. In the field work, Stanley showed nice feet and hip flexion to open up so he could get angles to turn the corner around cones. He was fluid in the field work, but not quite as athletic or quick as Tunsil was. Still, Stanley had the look of a starting left tackle prospect for the NFL. This combine performance should serve to confirm a top-20 grade for Stanley.
Indiana left tackle Jason Spriggs was one of the stars of the combine. He had a blistering 40-yard dash time at 4.85 seconds. It edged N.C. State’s Joe Thuney (4.86) for the fastest 40-time among the offensive linemen. In the field work, Spriggs was very smooth with good feet to shuffle. He had a solid week at the Senior Bowl on top of a nice season of tape in 2015. Spriggs has to get better at blocking inside moves and bull rushes, but this combine performance could lock Spriggs into being a top-50 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Michigan State left tackle Jack Conklin had a nice workout. He had an official time in the 40-yard dash of 5.09 seconds with 1.75-second 10-yard split. In the field drills, Conklin (6-5, 308) was fluid with good feet. He was a little tight, while his feet were good but not great. Overall, it was a solid workout that illustrated that Conklin is more of a right tackle or guard.
It was a rather average workout for Ohio State left tackle Taylor Decker. He had an official 40 time of 5.23 seconds. In the field drills, Decker (6-7, 310) was not as fluid as some of the other tackles, and he lumbered in the field drills. It illustrated that Decker is a better fit as a right tackle in the NFL.
Western Michigan offensive tackle Willie Beavers had a quality workout. Beavers (6-4, 321) had a 5.28-second time in the 40-yard dash, which was about average, but he flashed some athleticism in the field work. He looked good shuffling in the field drills, and it’s clear that Beavers has good feet.
Of the interior linemen, Alabama center Ryan Kelly had a really nice combine performance. He had a fast 40 time of 4.93 seconds with one of the faster 10-yard splits at 1.75 seconds. That tied Spriggs in the first 10 yards. In the field work, Kelly (6-4, 311) showed that he is a technician with good feet and athleticism. He also did well on the bench press yesterday. This was a complete combine performance for Kelly that should help solidify his draft grade.
Arizona State guard Christian Westerman earned the title of a workout warrior. Wasterman (6-3, 298) led all of the lineman in the bench press with 34 reps and followed it up with a 40-yard dash time of 5.17 seconds. Westerman capped the combine by performing well in the field drills.
UCLA offensive tackle Caleb Benendoch was another player who helped himself in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-5, 311-pounder had a 40-time of 4.98 seconds to open up some eyes. Benendoch was a smooth athlete in the field drills with some decent length to him. This combine was what Benendoch needed to cause teams to take a closer look at what he can be in the NFL.
A player who really impressed and opened some eyes was N.C. State tackle Joe Thuney. Thuney (6-4, 304) had the second-fastest 40 time at 4.86 seconds, but had the fastest time in the first 10 yards at 1.70 seconds. A day earlier, Thuney did well on the bench press with 28 reps. He did well in the field drills and helped himself to show teams that he could be a late-round pick to develop.
