This is the 2016 NFL Combine Stock Report for the defensive backs. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.
Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
Eli Apple is a polarizing prospect; some think he’s a first-round lock, while others don’t even think he belongs in the second frame. The former group might be right after Apple’s Combine performance. He posted one of the top 40 times (4.40), which included a 1.57 10-yard split. He blew everyone away in the field drills as well, as he had a fantastic workout.
Artie Burns, CB, Miami
Artie Burns was timed in a 4.46 40, which is a decent time for him. He was off to a good start, but struggled once the drills began. Burns looked very raw; he wasn’t smooth in his transitions, and he was very stiff throughout the drills. Burns did make a one-handed catch at one point, but that wasn’t nearly enough to salvage his disappointing performance.
K.J. Dillon, S, West Virginia
K.J. Dillon was one of the better safeties in the first group of defensive backs. He opened by running a 4.53 40, which is a solid time for a player at his position, especially one who happens to be 210 pounds. Dillon enjoyed a terrific field workout, too.
Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida
Vernon Hargreaves disappointed in his 40, posting a 4.50 with a 1.60 10-yard split. Now, this won’t automatically kill his stock; we saw another Gator corner, Joe Haden, also run poorly in Indianapolis, yet he still was selected in the top 10. However, Hargreaves was just average in the field drills. He excelled in some aspects, but he was a little stiff on other occasions.
William Jackson, CB, Houston
William Jackson was one of the top winners of the final day of the Combine. Jackson began the day by sprinting a 4.37 40, which included a 1.52 10-yard split. He also blew everyone away in the field drills, looking extremely fluid. It’s possible that Jackson could now emerge as a late first-round pick. He’ll be gone by the middle of the second frame, worst-case scenario.
Cyrus Jones, CB, Alabama
Cyrus Jones didn’t post a special 40 time – he ran a 4.44 unofficially, but then his finalized time turned out to be a 4.49 – but he thrived most when the drills commenced. Jones looked extremely smooth during the field workouts, so he definitely helped himself in Indianapolis.
Jonathan Jones, CB, Auburn
Jonathan Jones turned some heads by clocking in at a 4.28 in his unofficial 40. That time turned out to be an official 4.33, but it was still very impressive, to say the least. Jones was very explosive, both in his 10-yard split (1.48) and the drills. He was a bit stiff at times, but he definitely helped his draft stock.
Derrick Kindred, S, TCU
Derrick Kindred took advantage of the Combine to make a name for himself. Kindred began by running a 4.50 40 with a 1.58 10-yard split – two solid times for a safety. He also posted a 37.5-inch vertical and a 10-3 broad jump. Additionally, Kindred was more than just a workout warrior; he was extremely smooth in the drills. He helped his draft stock immensely.
Harlan Miller, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
Harlan Miller looked very tight in the drills, and his testing numbers didn’t make up for it. Miller clocked in at a 4.65 40, which is atrocious for a 182-pound cornerback. Miller’s 3-cone time of 7.44 was the slowest for any defensive back this year.
Jalen Ramsey, S/CB, Florida State
How could a projected top-six pick improve his stock? Well, Jalen Ramsey looked so great that he now stands a better chance of being San Diego’s pick at No. 3 overall. Ramsey won every single portion of the Combine; he ran a 4.41 40 with a 1.52 10-yard split; he leapt a 41.5-inch vertical and an 11-3 broad jump; he timed in a 6.94 in the 3-cone; and he was excellent in the field drills.
Justin Simmons, S, Boston College
Justin Simmons was one of the most-athletic defensive backs at the Combine this year. Simmons ran a 4.61 40, which is just fine for a 202-pound safety. However, Simmons also notched a 40-inch vertical, a 10-6 broad jump and a blazing-fast 6.58 3-cone. Simmons didn’t stand out (positively or negatively) in the drills, so he came out of the Combine as a winner.
Darian Thompson, S, Boise State
Darian Thompson posted horrible testing numbers throughout Monday afternoon. His 40 (4.69), vertical (32.5), broad jump (9-10) and 3-cone (7.26) were all poor. However, Tony Pauline reported that Thompson struggled because he was battling an illness. We’ll see if the projected second-rounder can bounce back at his pro day.
