2015 Senior Bowl: Jerry Reese Interview

By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

WalterFootball.com was able to catch up for a brief interview with New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese. Reese talked about the Giants’ successful 2014 NFL Draft led by rookie play-maker Odell Beckham Jr. and the state of New York’s offensive and defensive line heading into the offseason.

It can be hard for rookie receivers to make an immediate impact in the NFL, but obviously Odell Beckham Jr. was showing star potential in 2014. What do you think it was about him that allowed him to make the transition so effectively?

“Well, he played at a high level of competition in college and he has a terrific skill set. So he had all the tools to do it. And he’s smart. That’s one thing people don’t really talk about with him. He’s a smart kid, and he can line up and play a lot of different positions. And he’s driven. That’s his No. 1 trait. He’s a driven athlete, a gifted player; he did a nice job for us. If he can continue to develop like he’s done so far, he has the chance to be a good player for a long time.”

You’ve drafted a number of offensive linemen in recent years, and those players can take time to develop in the NFL. Offensive linemen, in particular, seem to peak later than most players. How do you feel your offensive line is coming together?

“We do have some young guys that we like, and we’re hoping to get more continuity as we move along. We like to have a couple of veterans sprinkled in there as well. Having some youth up there and playing together for a couple of seasons in a row will definitely help us. We’re always looking to upgrade our offensive line.”

It’s a similar story on the other side of the ball with a defensive line that has young guys coming along after you had to replace some pieces that led you to a couple of Super Bowl Championships.

“Yeah, big people up front give you a chance to win. Our defensive line is coming along. [Johnathan] Hankins had a nice season. Damontre Moore flashed and did some nice things up there. We have some more young guys that we like and we have some veterans mixed in. We have to make decision about what we are going to do with Jason Pierre-Paul, you know he’s a free agent; we have to make a decision in the near future on him. But the big guys on both sides of the ball up front are the ones that really give you a chance to win.”
