2015 Senior Bowl: Devin Smith Interview
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell
With Ohio State’s run to a National Championship, wide receiver Devin Smith became well known as a big play weapon that hurt a team downfield. At the Senior Bowl, Smith has been seeking to show NFL teams that he is a complete receiver capable of making plays in all levels of the field. Smith is a late first-round or second-round pick, so his Senior Bowl performance could prove to be very important for his draft stock. Walter Football joined a media huddle with Smith after Wednesday’s practice.
Who are some of the teams you’ve met with thus far at the Senior Bowl?
“I’ve met with the Broncos, Cleveland, the Giants, Dolphins, Texans, the Lions. A few teams I’ve met with the past few days.”
Do any of the teams stand out to you as showing more interest in you than others?
“I’ve met with the Dolphins numerous times. I’ve met with the Texans a few times as well. A few teams.”
You’re known as a vertical weapon, but where do you assess yourself as a run blocker?
“We did emphasize it a lot at Ohio State, but with me, whenever a guy was pressing me I used my speed and deep threat ability as a threat to run them off, and take them out of the picture.”
Are there any players in the NFL that you pattern your game after?
“I watch Jeremy Maclin play a lot, especially when he was at Missouri. He is a very smooth, smooth runner. He is just sassy when he runs and he is so natural when he runs. It kind of reminds me of myself a little bit.”
Have you spoken with the Eagles this week?
“I did briefly for just five minutes, just a background check on me, and that was about it.”
What do you need to prove this week?
“Really just establish myself and show that I can run all the other routes besides the go route. I’m working on my blocking and getting that technique done.”
Do you feel you can play outside and inside?
“I played inside a lot at Ohio State, especially this past year. I really believe that I can do both. … I can run all the other routes and I ran all the routes in practice and executed those routes, but I think with game planning they really wanted me out of the slot.”
