2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Favre Retirement, Seahawks, Cowboys

  • From Brandon:

With Brett Favre allegedly retiring for good, will the Jets go quarterback now at #17? Is that where Josh Freeman now lands, or will the Jets try to get someone more established in free agency since Freeman is such an uncertain entity? I’m looking forward to getting your opinion on this one!

    My Response:

If Mark Sanchez somehow falls to No. 17, I don’t think there’s any doubt the Jets will take him. But I don’t see them selecting Josh Freeman unless they absolutely fall in love with him. They still have Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff on the roster. I really like Ratliff; I think he should be the starter in 2009.

  • From David S.:

The Seahawks will not pick Eugene Monroe or any offense line with the 4th pick. Ruskell said a few things that tell us that an o-line is not an option at the 4th pick.

    Some things he said:

“Ive never been a fan of the high offensive lineman.”

“Our guys have done a great job in the 4th round…That seems to be our offensive line round…Thats what leans into my philosophy”

“You don’t have to take these guys high if you’re a well coached group and you work together…Offensive line is about continuity and I think Solari does a great job with that”.

I belive the Hawks will pick Crabtree, Jenkings or B.J. Raji. You should think that pick over!

    My Response:

I believe the Seahawks will pick Crabtree as well, but if he’s not, it’ll be a left tackle.

Don’t buy into what Ruskell or any other GM says. Why would they tell the truth and show their hand? The fact that he said no offensive tackle actually makes me believe that he’s probably targeting one.

  • From Aaron C.:

Everybody either has us taking Curry or Jenkins with the 5th pick. Do you think there is any possibility that we trade down but not too far so we can’t get a pass rusher(Brown, Maybin, Orakpo), then trade back into the 1st to get Jerry. Does that sound too crazy?? IDK, I just thought of it.

    My Response:

Trading out of the top five is pretty difficult for two reasons. First, teams have to give up way too much to move up there. And second, the economy is so bad right now that no owner wants to pay top-five money to an unproven player. Believe it or not, the No. 6 and 7 picks could be more valuable than the No. 5 choice right now in terms of financial reasons. That’s just the state we’re in.

  • From Steve W.:

Walter – I was just reviewing the Dallas roster and I think I’ve figured out the source of their problems – it’s the player names. This way more subtle than the Roy Williams duality, though that’s bad enough. They actually have players whose names simply don’t suit their positions. Seriously. They’ve got an Alan Ball – should be a 320lb offensive lineman with a name like that, right? Nope. He’s a DB, 186lbs soakin’ wet. And Alonzo Coleman? Should be a 6’5″ DE, but he’s actually a 5’9″ RB. That’s just WRONG!

    My Response:

Hilarious e-mail. Don’t forget about Tony Romo. With a name like that, everyone assumed he was Italian. People were shocked to find out that he’s part Mexican. Maybe that’s why he sucks in December.
