2012 NFL Combine: Workout Recap – Quarterbacks

  • Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III did not throw at the Combine, but he made waves by running two blistering 40-yard dash sprints. Griffin (6-2, 223) showed his elite speed with an official time of 4.41 seconds. There were no doubts that he is a rare athlete for the position, but he quantified it in Indianapolis.

  • The favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, ran two quick times in the 40 yard dash with his official time at 4.67. Luck (6-4, 234) has good mobility, so it is not surprising that he ran well at the Combine. Even though some have given Luck some grief, he has nothing to gain by throwing at the Combine, so it’s understandable that Luck will wait until his Pro Day.

  • Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins (6-3, 214) threw well in the drills and may have helped himself. Cousins ran a 4.93 40, which was one of the slower times for any of the quarterbacks in the first group.

  • LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson showcased major athleticism. He ran fast and exhibited a strong arm in the throwing drills. He ran a 4.65. Jefferson (6-4, 223) has big size and a special skill set, but he was too erratic in college without significant production. However, the ball looks good coming out of his hands with nice velocity. Jefferson is a late-round pick who could be a developmental project and Wildcat quarterback.

  • Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson (5-11, 204) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds. Wilson is a great athlete with a strong arm, but doesn’t have the stature to be a starter in the NFL. Wilson threw some nice passes in the drills. Some teams could consider him as backup signal-caller who is a Wildcat quarterback with a package of plays in the offense.

  • Arizona quarterback Nick Foles (6-5, 243) looked strong throwing the ball, but that is not surprising as he has a big arm with a good release. Foles is heavy-footed without mobility; he is not a great athlete and ran a slow 40 at 5.14. It was the slowest time of any quarterback.

  • Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler (6-7, 242) did not participate in the Combine drills because of a foot sprain that he suffered in his December bowl game against Boise State. That seems a little questionable considering the injury is two months old and didn’t require surgery.

  • Another potential first-round quarterback whom teams didn’t get a look at was Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill. ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas reported about 10 days ago that Tannehill would not participate in the on field drills, as he is still working his way back from foot surgery. Tannehill (6-4, 221) is expected to be 100 percent soon, and will work out for teams before the 2012 NFL Draft. One negative that was exposed in the Combine weigh-in was that Tannehill (9 inches) tied for the smallest hands of any of the quarterbacks.
