Perrion Winfrey Mixed Evaluation

One player who really helped himself on the field at the Senior Bowl was Oklahoma defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. He had a phenomenal practice on Wednesday of Senior Bowl week, showing the speed and twitch to cause a lot of disruption in the backfield. In the passing-driven NFL, an interior pass rusher like Winfrey could easily rise. However, teams have concerns with him on the field and off the field, so Winfrey is receiving mixed evaluations from teams.
“He’s got nice twitch and is fast,” said an AFC director of player personnel. “But his instincts are terrible. He gets lot of penalties and was destroyed versus the run. Plus, there’s the off the field.”
As a senior, Winfrey showed the good and the bad of what the director said. While he had 5.5 sacks, a good number for a defensive tackle, Winfrey totaled only 23 tackles on the season, which is a troubling lack of production as a run defender in a conference that does not field daunting offensive lines.
For the off-the-field issues, it sounds like Winfrey’s issues relates more to partying and how that could impact his availability for game day. While Winfrey helped himself in Mobile, he needs to follow it up with a strong combine. After the Senior Bowl practices, performing well in the team interviews is more important than Winfrey’s field workout.
