The 2022 NFL Draft is considered to be a strong year for edge-rush talent while also having good classes for wide receivers, cornerbacks, and offensive tackles. A lot has been made that the 2022 NFL Draft is a weak year at quarterback, but another position where talent is lacking is at tight end. NFL team sources shared with WalterFootball.com that they definitely do not see a first-round pick at the tight end position. Multiple team sources across the league say they believe Colorado State tight end Trey McBride will be the first tight end taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, although the highest he would possibly go is Round 2.

“McBride should be a third- or fourth-round pick. That is what he is as a player,” said an area scout. “But in this class, he could go second round and be the first tight end drafted.”

McBride had an excellent senior year, catching 90 passes for 1,121 yards but only one touchdown for the Rams. Sources from three different NFL teams, including two directors of player personnel said they thought McBride would be the first tight end selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

For a lot of the draft process and the leadup to the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, many team sources thought Texas A&M tight end Jalen Wydermyer would be the first tight end drafted because he has a good skill set with size, quickness and athleticism. Wydermyer’s stock has fallen, however, and WalterFootball.com reported on Thursday here in the Hot Press that Wydermyer is one of the players who team sources said had not interviewed well at the combine.

The tight end class could offer some mid-round depth in the 2022 NFL Draft, but right now, teams do not see a lot of high-quality future starters, with only McBride receiving a solid future starter grade and projection from multiple teams.
