2016 NFL Combine: Weigh-In Analysis – Quarterbacks
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
For a point of comparison, here are some of the measurements of other recent quarterback prospects:
Jameis Winston: 6-foot-4, 231 pounds, 9 3/8-inch hands.
Marcus Mariota: 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, 9 7/8-inch hands.
Blake Bortles: 6-foot-5, 232 pounds, 9 3/8-inch hands.
Teddy Bridgewater: 6-foot-2, 214 pounds, 9 1/4-inch hands.
Johnny Manziel: 5-foot-11, 207 pounds, 9 7/8-inch hands.
Throughout the fall and into the offseason, one of the concerns for Cal quarterback Jared Goff has been a slight frame and his ability to add weight. Teams have concerns that Goff will stay skinny and have trouble maintaining his playing weight in the offseason. At the Combine weigh-in, Goff didn’t ease those concerns, as he checked in at 6-foot-4, 214 pounds with 9-inch hands.
New Browns head coach Hue Jackson said hand size is important to him, so Goff having smaller hands than the other first and second-day quarterback prospects will hurt his chances of being Cleveland’s selection with the second-overall pick.
The measurements for North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz (6-5, 232 and 10-inch hands) were already known from the Senior Bowl weigh-in. Wentz is one pound lighter than in Mobile, so he has stayed the same. Teams believe that Wentz will be able to add weight in a NFL strength and conditioning program to fill out his frame as a pro. From a size perspective, Wentz has a leg up on Goff to be the first quarterback selected.
Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch checked in at 6-foot-7, 244-pounds with 10 1/4-inch hands. Lynch was one pound shy of being his exact listed numbers. Having big hands isn’t a surprise as Lynch was known for being a big quarterback. With his size, arm strength, and athleticism, it wouldn’t be surprising if Lynch impresses at the Combine.
Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones could be one of the stars of the Combine, as he has a cannon for an arm with athleticism to go with it. Jones (6-5, 253) had 9 3/4-inch hands and was as expected with his build. Don’t be surprised if Jones sends a charge into his draft stock with a good performance at the Combine.
Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg needs to perform well on the field and in the team meetings. Sources with some teams have told us that they graded Hackenberg in the fourth round. Others have third-round grades on Hackenberg, but every team source believes that Hackenberg (6-4, 223) will end up being a second-round pick because of the need for quarterbacks. Hackenberg’s hand size of nine inches is on the small side. He also was 10 pounds lighter than his listed numbers, so he may have dropped weight in an effort to be more athletic in the Combine field work.
Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook (6-4, 217) met his listed numbers and he had 9 3/4-inch hands. However teams will want Cook to add more weight to his frame, and he looked thicker during the season. Perhaps he too dropped weight to move better in the field drills. There has been talk that Cook has surprising athleticism and speed, so don’t be surprised if he performs well in the field work.
If you’re looking for an oddity, USC’s Cody Kessler would fit the bill. Kessler (6-1, 220) is an undersized quarterback for the NFL, but he had the biggest hands of any quarterback at the Combine with 10 7/8-inch hands. Kessler didn’t impress at the Senior Bowl, so he needs a strong performance in Indianapolis to help his chances of being drafted on the third day of the draft.
The smallest hands of any quarterback at the Combine came from Arkansas’ Brandon Allen at 8 7/8-inch hands. Allen (6-1, 217) is a late-round prospect, and having small hands will definitely be held against him by some teams.
