Quinn Ewers Prospect Preview
By Charlie Campbell
Career Recap:
Ewers started his collegiate career at Ohio State before transferring to Texas. In 2022, he had a decent debut, completing 58 percent of his passes for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The second season working with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian really paid off as Ewers showed significant improvement. In 2023, Ewers completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Ewers led the Longhorns to a spot in the college football playoff.
2024 Season Outlook::
There are a lot of tough opponents on the Longhorns schedule in 2024. The best games to watch Ewers could include Michigan (Sep. 7), Oklahoma (Oct. 12), Georgia (Oct. 19), and Texas A&M (Nov. 30).
Prospect Summary:
There are always teams in the NFL Draft looking for a new starting quarterback or a young quarterback to develop behind a veteran for a year or two. After his last two seasons at Texas, Ewers looks like a potential starter for the next level and could rise over the 2024 season.
Ewers definitely has the arm talent for the NFL. He has a quality arm capable of making all the throws, and he can be an accurate rhythm passer. With a quick release and good anticipation, Ewers is a dangerous rhythm passer who sees the field well and clearly has a good knowledge of his offense. Ewers is a good decision-maker who can drop accurate passes into receivers downfield to beat good coverage. Coming from an advanced college offense, Ewers has learned to read coverage and work through progressions. While Ewers is not a tall quarterback, he sees the field well and has good passing instincts for where his receivers will break open.
While Ewers won’t be a running dual-threat quarterback in the NFL, he has functional mobility to scramble and can throw well on the run. He also picks his spots well to take off running. As a pro, his running ability won’t threaten defenses, but he will be helpful to his offensive line by offering some scrambling ability.
Entering the 2024 season, Ewers has areas of improvement for the next level. He could throw the deep ball with more velocity at times, but the biggest area he needs to improve is his feet. Ewers has inconsistent footwork, where he will have some throws that he doesn’t step into, retreat backward at times, and doesn’t always reset his feet once he gets off his drop. These are issues that can be improved on over time, and it will be interesting to see if he made strides prior to the 2024 season.
Ewers is a gritty quarterback and a competitor. His look, arm, and athletic ability are very similar to Baker Mayfield, and I could see him being that caliber of starting quarterback in the NFL.
2025 NFL Draft Expectations:
Entering the 2024 season, Ewers looks like he has early-round potential for the 2025 NFL Draft.
