I’d be remiss if I didn’t end the season with one more article about Christine Brennan. We’ve had lots of fun with Brennan this year, criticizing her panic-driven fear porn. Brennan made it sound like the End of Times when Nick Saban tested positive for Coronavirus, and earlier, she opined that playing college football amid our so-called pandemic was worse than Jerry Sandusky raping little boys…
Brennan would write biweekly articles about college football’s demise because of our oh-so-dangerous virus, but something happened in the wake of her Saban publication. The columns stopped. Brennan began focusing on golf. I imagine the severe backlash I highlighted in my previous Christine Brennan article finally got to her, and she asked to stop writing about college football.
Brennan, however, has found another sport about which she can fearmonger:
College basketball.
Here we go again! Amazingly, Brennan continues to panic despite it being proven that the virus is not a threat to young people, especially those in shape. College basketball players are even less at risk than those playing football because there are no 300-pound linemen participating in the sport.
So, why is it madness to play college basketball even though no one is in danger? Let’s find out!
Why are we playing college basketball right now?
Umm, why not? This is how Brennan began her article, by posing a question no one is asking. Cool stuff.
The college football season is limping to an uncertain conclusion, with COVID-19 emerging as the clear winner in locker rooms around the nation. The pandemic is raging across the country, killing thousands of Americans and filling hospitals to capacity.
How is college football limping to an uncertain conclusion when we have our playoff field and bowl games set? Everyone knows how it’s going to conclude, outside of the predicted winners. The games will be played with no issue. And no, the pandemic is not raging across the country. That’s fearmongering nonsense. I have friends who work in hospitals, and they told me they’re dying to find new Coronavirus patients so they can receive more funding.
There’s one fellow in particular who would like to know what’s going on. On Tuesday, he said this: “I don’t think it feels right to anybody. I mean, everyone is concerned.”
This is great journalism on Brennan’s part. She found one crazy, anonymous person who agrees with her. Good stuff. I can do the same thing.
“Hey guys, this is Walt’s friend, and I can tell you for sure that playing college sports is a-OK.”
See? I’m a great journalist like Brennan.
The man also said this: “I would just like for the safety, the mental and physical health of players and staff, to assess where we’re at.”
But he ended his sentence with a preposition, so perhaps we shouldn’t listen to him.
And this: “You have 2,000 deaths a day. You have 200,000 cases. People are saying the next six weeks are going to be the worst. To me, it’s already pretty bad. On the other side of it, there are these vaccines that are coming out. By the end of the month, 20 million vaccine shots will be given. By the end of January or in February, another 100 million. Should we not reassess that? And see just what would be best?”
This fellow seems to know a lot of specific numbers. I’m sure this “fellow” isn’t really Brennan looking up numbers and speaking through “him,” all while adding some prepositions at the end of sentences to make “him” seem a bit dumber than her. Of course, this isn’t the case. Brennan is a journalist, and journalists are honest people you can always trust.
That is the voice of Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. And because of the fraught times we’re in, he made a point of saying his words have nothing to do with Duke’s 83-68 loss to Illinois Tuesday night.
So, Mike Krzyzewski allegedly said these words. Let’s pretend for a second that he did. Why should we automatically believe that he doesn’t want the season to end prematurely because his team sucks this year? I like that he made a point in saying that. I think the Coach K doth protest too much.
Krzyzewski is not alone in his concern about continuing to play a sport during these incredibly trying times. One of his former players and assistants, Pittsburgh men’s coach Jeff Capel, was asked Monday at his news conference if the season should have been delayed…
“If you look at the numbers, yes,” he said. “It’s interesting to me, if you look at the numbers back in March when the season was canceled, the numbers are worse right now than they were back in March. I don’t know who the leadership is, but maybe they would think about a little bit of a pause just so kids can be with their families for Christmas, coaches can be with their families. But most importantly, what’s going on in our country right now as far as these numbers is staggering.”
Of course the numbers back in March weren’t as bad as they are now because the virus hadn’t spread yet. The reason why we shut everything down in March was to slow the spread so the hospitals wouldn’t be overrun. We had no idea what was coming because China hid all of its data. I heard some reports indicating that five percent of the United States’ population would die. That turned out not to be the case, with this so-called disease having a 99.98-percent survival rate and an average death age of 78. That’s older than life expectancy. So, unless college basketball begins recruiting in nursing homes, no one is in danger. It’s amazing how a couple of dumb basketball coaches – as well as lunatic sportswriter – don’t understand this concept.
This is different from what we saw with college football, where so many tough-guy coaches thought they could pummel the coronavirus, when in fact it has been the other way around.
Ah, so now we know why Brennan skittered away from covering college football to college hoops. She couldn’t find any weak-minded wusses in football to agree with her psychosis, so she begged her bosses at USA Today to cover basketball instead.
The solution is simple. Stop the season. Stop the games, men’s and women’s, right now. There’s no shame in this. It’s the smart thing to do.
No. It’s the dumb thing to do. It’s the weak thing to do. It’s the illogical thing to do. Again, the Coronavirus is no threat to anyone on the court. It’s just a minor inconvenience at the very worst. It doesn’t make sense to postpone or cancel anything. Hopefully the “fellows” Brennan “interviewed” realize the truth soon.
