2014 NFL Combine: Bench Press Recap – Tight Ends
By Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

  • Vance McDonald produced the most bench press reps for tight ends last year with 31 reps. That was an impressive total, so it is really saying something for Dixie State’s Joe Don Duncan to best that with 35 reps this year. No other tight end even hit 30, so Duncan’s total was massive. Duncan was invited to the Senior Bowl, but couldn’t play because of an injury. Duncan needs a big Combine performance, and he’s off to a great start.

  • The consensus top tight end prospect, North Carolina’s Eric Ebron, had a quality total with 24 reps. There were other other players who did better, but Ebron hit the same number as Zach Ertz (24) last year and did better than Tyler Eifert (22), the first tight end drafted. Ebron should tear it up in the 40 and in the field work.

  • Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro (6-5, 265) showed off some impressive strength with the second-highest total of 28 reps, tied by Georgia’s Arthur Lynch. Amaro’s blocking is considered to be a weakness in his game, but this bench press total helps to illustrate to evaluators that he has some strength to work with. Amaro’s total stands out as well because he has the second-longest arms (34 inches) of any tight end prospect. Amaro represented himself well in the weight room.

  • Notre Dame tight end Troy Niklas (6-6, 270) has good size with the longest arms of any tight end prospect (34 1/8). Niklas put up an impressive total of 27 reps on the bench. Many expect Niklas to be one of the Combine standouts.

  • Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (6-5, 262) had a lower total of 20 reps on the bench. Seferian-Jenkins has shown the ability to be a blocker in the ground game so it was surprising that he didn’t produce more on the bench press.

  • Former Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla (6-4, 242) quit the Ducks’ football team last year and had a drug arrest. Despite those wake-up calls, it appears that Lyerla wasn’t all that dedicated in the weight room as he had the lowest total of any tight end prospect with 15 reps. Lylerla needs a good Combine performance – including conducting himself well in the interviews – to get drafted. His last- place bench press total is an ugly start.
