2014 Fantasy Football Rankings - Quarterbacks (Aug. 30):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-35

  1. Robert Griffin, QB, Redskins. Bye: 10.
AUG. 24: Many consider the Redskins a potential sleeper team because Robert Griffin is healthy and no longer has to deal with Mike Shanahan. However, Griffin has struggled this preseason, and his third game was the worst of them all. Griffin went 5-of-8 for just 20 yards and an interception in more than one half of action. His rushing numbers (3 carries, 3 yards) were just as ugly.

AUG. 19: Robert Griffin was sharp early on against the Browns until he threw an interception. He telegraphed a pass to DeSean Jackson, allowing Joe Haden to easily pick it off. He then was whistled for two false starts and also limped around a bit after a short run. Griffin turned out to be OK, but it was just a reminder of how injury-prone he is.

JULY 6: The Redskin coaches have commented that Robert Griffin has looked like his “2012 self” in OTAs. Griffin is definitely primed for a rebound campaign, though the issue with him is a potential injury. He’s so fragile that it’s almost certain that he’ll miss at least a couple of games this year. If you draft him, he’ll post high QB1 numbers for you, but make sure you have a solid backup for when he goes down.

Robert Griffin saw all of his numbers plummet in 2013, but that was to be expected, given that he was coming off knee surgery. Griffin will be better this upcoming season, but keep in mind that he’s extremely prone to injury. If you draft him, make sure you have a solid No. 2 quarterback.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,400 passing yards. 21 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 560 rushing yards. 6 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 279.

  2. Cam Newton, QB, Panthers. Bye: 12.
AUG. 26: The rib injury Cam Newton sustained in the third preseason game is serious enough to put his Week 1 availability in question. Newton will probably be on the field, but he’ll likely run less than he already has.

AUG. 23: Cam Newton had a poor performance against the Patriots. He went 8-of-12 for 88 yards. Those numbers don’t sound too bad, but he missed several open targets, including Greg Olsen twice for big gains. The offensive line couldn’t protect him either, and what’s worse is that Newton looks incredibly hesitant to scramble. He did run for seven yards on one play, but he bent over and grabbed his hip afterward. He had to leave the game for one play. Based on what I’ve seen this preseason, I wouldn’t want Newton as my starting fantasy quarterback.

AUG. 18: Cam Newton had some issues for various reasons throughout his preseason debut. He had Kelvin Benjamin open downfield in the first quarter, but he overthrew him. He also had lots of pressure in his face. His new offensive line did not hold up well versus the Chiefs’ pass rush. Newton improved as the game progressed – he hit Benjamin for an 24-yard dart in the middle of the second quarter – but this could be a long season for Newton if his blocking doesn’t improve. It also doesn’t seem as though Newton is moving around as well as usual; he didn’t scramble downfield once. This is to be expected, given that he’s coming off ankle surgery, but it’ll impact his fantasy output.

AUG. 8: Cam Newton told FOX’s Alex Marvez that he doesn’t expect to scramble as much this year. He said he’s “reluctant with mobility” because he’s coming off ankle surgery.

Those who used Cam Newton during the fantasy playoffs last year probably lost; he threw just three touchdowns in Weeks 14-16. On top of that, he lost his entire receiving corps this offseason. Kelvin Benjamin may not be able to help much as a rookie.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,600 passing yards. 23 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 430 rushing yards. 5 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 277.

  3. Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers. Bye: 10.
Better coaching, a No. 1 receiver and improved protection. It’s almost as if Philip Rivers found a magic lamp and wished for those three things. Rivers became a solid QB1 in 2013, and he figures to continue to thrive under San Diego’s new regime.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,400 passing yards. 29 passing TDs. 12 INTs. 50 rushing yards. 0 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 273.

  4. Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers. Bye: 12.
Ben Roethlisberger started slowly, but he caught fire when a couple of things happened (Heath Miller returned from injury; Kelvin Beachum shored up the left tackle position). Roethlisberger consequently had one of the best seasons of his career. If fourth-round rookie receiver Martavis Bryant develops quickly, he’ll be even more potent.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,150 passing yards. 27 passing TDs. 13 INTs. 90 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 263.

  5. Nick Foles, QB, Eagles. Bye: 7.
AUG. 15: With major concerns in his receiving corps – Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper are both hurt, while Joran Matthews can’t catch anything – Nick Foles’ outlook isn’t very bright. He has been overdrafted in mocks anyway; he’s due for regression. I don’t even view him as a QB1.

AUG. 9: Nick Foles did not get off to a good start in 2014. He went 6-of-9 for 44 yards and two interceptions in his preseason debut. I wouldn’t put the first pick on him – his arm was slightly tipped – but the second one was all his fault, as he threw off his back foot into double coverage toward Zach Ertz. Foles also had a third possible interception dropped by Lance Briggs. On the bright side, he did have two completions negated by a hold and a face mask, and in fairness, he was missing Riley Cooper, but this was a disappointing showing overall.

There’s no way Nick Foles will be able to maintain his ridiculous 27-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio next year. He’ll actually have to play multiple teams with top-10 defenses, plus opponents will be able to break down film on him and Chip Kelly’s offense. Oh, and don’t forget about DeSean Jackson’s departure. With Jackson gone, teams will be able to pay more attention to Riley Cooper. I wouldn’t trust Foles as a starter, but he’s a high-end QB2.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,850 passing yards. 24 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 250 rushing yards. 3 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 261.

  6. Josh McCown, QB, Buccaneers. Bye: 7.
Josh McCown has put in a lot of hard work and has gotten great tutoring from Kurt Warner to help improve his game over the years. It helped last year that he had Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey to throw to, all while being coached by Marc Trestman. Well, McCown will have Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans in Tampa, and that combo is almost as good. Jeff Tedford also has a great history with quarterbacks. McCown is a solid QB2.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 4,100 passing yards. 25 passing TDs. 14 INTs. 120 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 260.

  7. Ryan Tannehill, QB, Dolphins. Bye: 5.
Ryan Tannehill just missed on so many deep shots to Mike Wallace this past season. Odds say that he’ll have to connect on them this year. That won’t make him a QB1, but he’s a strong backup with upside if he can improve his deep accuracy.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,900 passing yards. 25 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 220 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 260.

  8. Andy Dalton, QB, Bengals. Bye: 4.
Andy Dalton threw nine touchdowns in Weeks 14-16 this past season, rewarding anyone who started him in the playoffs. Dalton will likely take a step backward, however, after losing Jay Gruden to the Washington job. Besides, his confidence could be shot after yet another first-round exit.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,800 passing yards. 26 passing TDs. 18 INTs. 150 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 247.

  9. Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Texans. Bye: 10.
Ryan Fitzpatrick will probably enjoy the best season of his career because he’ll be coached by Bill O’Brien. Unfortunately, he’s still Ryan Fitzpatrick, so you’ll want nothing to do with him unless you’re in a 2-QB league.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,700 passing yards. 24 passing TDs. 16 INTs. 200 rushing yards. 2 rushing TDs.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 244.

  10. Jay Cutler, QB, Bears. Bye: 9.
Jay Cutler was a solid fantasy quarterback this past season, thanks to the emergence of Alshon Jeffery as a strong No. 2 option across from Brandon Marshall. However, Cutler missed five games. This wouldn’t be a big deal if it were an isolated incident, but he was banged up in 2012 and missed six contests the year before that.

Projected 2014 Fantasy Stats: 3,300 passing yards. 23 passing TDs. 15 INTs. 140 rushing yards. 1 rushing TD.
Projected 2014 Fantasy Points (ESPN Scoring): 232.
