2016 Combine: Bench Press Analysis – Defensive Linemen
By Charlie Campbell –
@draftcampbell
For a point of comparison, here are some of the totals from other recent defensive line prospects:
Dontari Poe 44
Margus Hunt 38
Aaron Donald 35
Vic Beasley 35
Danny Shelton 34
Stephon Tuitt 31
Melvin Ingram 28
Bjoern Werner 25
Quinton Coples 25
Randy Gregory 24
Jadeveon Clowney 21
Shane Ray 21
Trent Murphy 19
Michael Brockers 19
Shea McClellin 19
Also, it is worth noting that defensive linemen with long arms are at a disadvantage on the bench press. Short-armed linemen have a real edge.
Baylor nose tackle Andrew Billings was expected to be one of the best performers on the bench press, and that was the case as he totaled 31 reps. Billings (6-0, 311) was known as a star weight-lifter from Texas, so I was thinking he might push into the mid to high 30s, but 31 is still an impressive total.
Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa (6-5, 269) had a strong showing with 24 reps. It was quality performance from Bosa that puts him in line with other first-round pick edge rushers.
The largest totals came from three players who aren’t big names. Georgia’s Chris Mayes (33 reps), Temple’s Matt Ioanndis (32 reps), and Appalachian State’s Ronald Blair (32 reps) were top three among the defensive linemen.
Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (6-1, 299) had a strong showing on the bench press with 28 reps. The Cardinals defender could impress with his speed and athleticism on Sunday.
Ole Miss defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche (6-3, 294) did well as he cranked out 28 reps. Nkemdiche is a size, speed, athletic freak, so he should perform well at the Combine.
Eastern Kentucky defensive end Noah Spence (6-2, 251) churned out 25 reps of 225 pounds. That is an impressive total considering Spence is a 250-pound speed rusher.
One player whom I thought would have produced more on the bench press was Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson. Robinson (6-3, 307) had 22 reps on the bench. It looks like he dropped weight to run faster at the Combine, and perhaps part of that was cutting back on time in the weight room.
Another player with a moderately disappointing total was Ohio State defensive tackle Adolphus Washington. He posted 21 reps. Washington (6-3, 301) will probably want to add some more functional strength for the NFL.
The last potential first-rounder who didn’t have a very good showing on the bench press was Oklahoma State’s Emmanuel Ogbah. Ogbah (6-4, 273) totaled 20 reps, but he does have some of the longest arms (35 1/2 inches) of any of the defensive line prospects.
A lot of good prospects did not bench. That group included Oregon’s DeForest Buckner, Clemson’s Kevin Dodd, Clemson’s Shaq Lawson, Florida’s Alex McCalister, Stony Brook’s Victor Ochi, Alabama’s Jarran Reed, and Michigan State’s Lawrence Thomas.
