Patrick Payton Prospect Preview

By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap:

    Over the past two seasons, Florida State has featured one of the best pass-rushing tandems in college football, with Payton and Jared Verse. In 2022, Verse broke out for the Seminoles, with Payton contributing 31 tackles with six tackles for a loss and five sacks. A year later, Payton was even better and helped to be disruptive when extra attention went to Verse or Braden Fiske. In 2023 Payton totaled 42 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks.

2024 Season Outlook::

Payton has a very manageable schedule in 2024, and the best games to gauge him could be Clemson (Oct. 5), Miami (Oct. 26), Notre Dame (Nov. 9), and Florida (Nov. 30).

Prospect Summary:

NFL defenses are always looking to improve and increase their pass-rush talent, and Payton has the skill set to play at the next level. While he has room for improvement, Payton has the upside to make a big jump in his third season with the Seminoles. Payton has talent, but he needs to take his game to another in 2024.

As a pass rusher, Payton has a quick first step with the speed to get upfield. While he may not have Von Miller’s explosion off the edge, Payton definitely has the quickness to get penetration and get past offensive tackles. Payton uses his length well to fight off blocks in the rush, and he does a nice job of keeping tackles from getting into his chest. Payton is an effective pursuit, showing nice vision to adjust to scrambling quarterbacks and work his way through trash. Payton needs to improve on his repertoire of pass-rushing moves for the NFL. Right now, he is too predictable with speed or power rushes. He should add a spin, rip, and use more inside counters. Payton needs to show an improved ability to beat offensive tackles cleanly in 2024 in order to be a potential first-round pick.

In the ground game, Payton’s length and pursuit skills show up. When he gets his hand placement in a good spot, his length helps him to keep tackles from knocking him around. He also does a nice job of redirecting and flowing to the ball. However, Payton does get covered up and moved out of his gap at times. Payton needs to get stronger, especially in the lower body, to be able to hold his ground. Payton has issues defending downhill runs coming straight at him. Payton is going to need to improve his run defense for the NFL, as he is going to see tackles that are much bigger, stronger, and more athletic.

Payton has potential, but he needs a strong 2024 season in order to grade out as a starter and be a potential early-round pick.

2025 NFL Draft Expectations:

Entering the 2024 season, Payton looks like he has day-one or day-two potential for the 2025 NFL Draft, depending upon how he plays and produces this year.
