2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Joel Embiid


Position: Center

Size: 7-0, 250

School: Kansas, Freshman


Strengths:

Height

Athleticism

Length

Shot blocking

A rim-protector

Pick-and-roll defender

Denying the passing lane when opposing players post him up

Runs the floor well

Footwork in the post

Developing low post game

Nice touch on his mid-range jumper

Just scratching the surface on his potential

Weaknesses:

All-around offensive game is still a work in progress

Needs to be stronger with the ball on the block

Aggressiveness on the glass

Physicality

Summary: For somebody still “new” to the game of basketball, Embiid has made tremendous strides but hasn’t come close to even tapping his true potential. Since size is always coveted in the NBA, there is a realistic chance the Cameroon native could be the No. 1-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Player Comparison: Hakeem Olajuwon. It is easy to see why Embiid is drawing comparisons to a younger Hakeem Olajuwon. With his size, athleticism, footwork, and blossoming talent, Embiid has the potential to be a dominant low post scorer and defensive presence if his game continues to grow at the rate it has in the past couple of years.
