2012 NFL Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2012.
Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Calais Campbell, DE/DT, Cardinals. Age: 26.
Re-signed with Cardinals (5 years, $55 million; $31 million guaranteed)

You could argue that aside from Justin Smith, Calais Campbell is the best 3-4 defensive end in all of football. Campbell has no weaknesses; he’s a ferocious pass-rusher, he blocks kicks, and he can even drop into coverage pretty well. And he’ll be 25 until Sept. 1.

  2. Paul Soliai, NT, Dolphins. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Dolphins

At 6-4, 355 pounds, Paul Soliai is a monstrous, run-stuffing nose tackle. He made $12.3 million with the franchise tag this season.

  3. Red Bryant, DE/DT, Seahawks. Age: 28.
Re-signed with Seahawks (5 years, $35 million; $14.5 million guaranteed)

Red Bryant is a powerful run-stuffer who can play in both the 4-3 and 3-4.

  4. Kendall Langford, DE/DT, Dolphins. Age: 26.
Signed with Rams (4 years, $24 million; $12 million guaranteed)

Kendall Langford is a really good, young five-tech who excels in both stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback. He’s a key piece of Miami’s 3-4 stop unit who will have to be retained.

  5. Cory Redding, DE/DT, Ravens. Age: 31.
Signed with Colts (3 years, $10.5 million)

An excellent run-stuffer, Cory Redding can still get to the quarterback on occasion (4.5 sacks in 2011).

  6. Sione Pouha, NT, Jets. Age: 33.
    Re-signed with Jets (3 years)

Sione Pouha is one of the top run-stuffers in the NFL, but he turns 33 on Feb. 3. His best days are behind him.

  7. Jason Jones, DT, Titans. Age: 26.
    Signed with Seahawks (1 year)

Jason Jones thrived as a defensive tackle in a wide-nine scheme prior to this season. He was moved to defensive end in 2011 and consequently struggled. Jones needs to go to Detroit, Philadelphia or St. Louis this spring.

  8. Sammie Lee Hill (RFA), NT, Lions. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Lions (1 year, $1.26 million)

Sammie Hill is a young, skilled run-stuffer who offers decent pass-rushing ability for someone his size (6-4, 330).

  9. Albert Haynesworth, DT, Buccaneers. Age: 31.
There’s a misconception that Albert Haynesworth played poorly for the Buccaneers last season. He didn’t; he was decent at times, but wasn’t worth the $7.2 million price tag – or the headaches that come with his lack of effort. He’s still immensely talented, however, and he could be motivated for a new contract. He’s definitely worth the risk for a 1-year “prove it” deal.

  10. Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Broncos. Age: 28.
Signed with Saints (5 years, $25 million; $9 million guaranteed)

Brodrick Bunkley had a great year as a run-stuffer, but he offers nothing in the pass-rushing department.

  11. Derek Landri, DT, Eagles. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Eagles (1 year)

Derek Landri thrived as a reserve defensive tackle in 2011, getting good pressure on the quarterback and helping shut down the run. Not bad for a guy who was among the final cuts prior to the season.

  12. Antonio Garay, NT, Chargers. Age: 32.
    Re-signed with Chargers (2 years)

Antonio Garay is no longer the player he once was, but he is still a decent run-stuffer.

  13. Antonio Dixon (RFA), DT, Eagles. Age: 27.
    Re-signed with Eagles (1 year)

Antonio Dixon functioned as an excellent run-stuffer in 2010, but he missed most of this past year with torn triceps. He’s a poor fit in Jim Washburn’s scheme anyway, so the Eagles might just put a really low tender on him.

  14. Luis Castillo, DE/DT, Chargers. Age: 29.
Luis Castillo still has the talent to start, but he’s always hurt. He’s way too unreliable to receive a contract with lots of guaranteed money.

  15. Amobi Okoye, DT, Bears. Age: 25.
Signed with Buccaneers (1 year, $2 million)

After being discarded by the Texans, Amobi Okoye found a home with the Bears as a rotational defensive tackle who can pressure the quarterback.

  16. Desmond Bryant (RFA), DE/DT, Raiders. Age: 26.
    Tendered by Raiders

Desmond Bryant is pretty good in run support. He has the versatility to play in any defense.

  17. Marcus Thomas, DT, Broncos. Age: 26.
Marcus Thomas is good in run support, but doesn’t have a prayer of ever getting to the quarterback.

  18. John Henderson, DT, Raiders. Age: 33.
    Announced retirement

John Henderson is a force versus ground attacks, but he’ll be lucky to get two sacks in a season.

  19. Justin Bannan, DE/DT, Rams. Age: 33.
    Signed with Broncos (1 year)

Justin Bannan is very effective versus the rush, but he can’t get to the quarterback whatsoever. He can play in any scheme.

  20. Kelly Gregg, NT, Chiefs. Age: 35.
Kelly Gregg did a great job stuffing the run early, but wore down as the season went on. He’ll be 36 in November.

  21. Letroy Guion, DT, Vikings. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Vikings (3 years)

Letroy Guion is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none type of player. He’s a quality rotational lineman, but nothing else.

  22. Fred Robbins, DT, Rams. Age: 35.
Fred Robbins has no pass-rushing ability, but he can still stop the run pretty well.

  23. Gerard Warren, DT, Patriots. Age: 34.
    Re-signed with Patriots

Gerard Warren had a great performance against the Broncos in the playoffs, but he’ll be 34 in July.

  24. Shaun Rogers, NT, Saints. Age: 33.
    Signed with Giants

Shaun Rogers stuffed the run well this past season, but offered nothing in terms of rushing the passer.

  25. Adam Carriker, DE/DT, Redskins. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Redskins (4 years, $20 million)

Adam Carriker can be a solid rotational player in a 3-4 front, but he shouldn’t be a starter going forward.

  26. Phillip Merling, DE/DT, Dolphins. Age: 27.
    Signed with Packers

Phillip Merling could barely do anything this year coming off an Achilles injury. Perhaps he can bounce back and finally live up to his potential next year.

  28. Amon Gordon, NT, Chiefs. Age: 30. — Re-signed with Chiefs (2 years)

  32. Tommie Harris, DT, Chargers. Age: 29.
  33. Rocky Bernard, DT, Giants. Age: 33. — Re-signed with Giants
  34. Leger Douzable, DT, Jaguars. Age: 26. — Signed with Titans (1 year)

  37. Pat Sims, DT, Bengals. Age: 26. — Re-signed with Bengals
  38. Brandon McKinney, NT, Ravens. Age: 29. — Signed with Colts
  39. Eric Foster, DT, Colts. Age: 27.
  40. Kedric Golston, DE/DT, Redskins. Age: 29. — Re-signed with Redskins
  41. Trevor Laws, DT, Eagles. Age: 27. — Signed with Rams
  42. Remi Ayodele, DT, Vikings. Age: 29.
  43. Gary Gibson, DT, Rams. Age: 30. — Signed with Buccaneers (2 years, $2 million)
  44. Brian Schaefering, DT, Browns. Age: 29. — Re-signed with Browns

  46. Anthony Adams, DT, Bears. Age: 32.
  47. Howard Green, NT, Packers. Age: 33.

  49. Aaron Smith, DE/DT, Steelers. Age: 36.
  50. Andre Fluellen, DT, Lions. Age: 27. — Re-signed with Lions (1 year)

  52. Jimmy Kennedy, DT, Giants. Age: 32.
  53. Chris Hoke, NT, Steelers. Age: 36. — Announced retirement
  54. Nate Collins, DT, Jaguars. Age: 24. — Signed with Bears
  55. Nick Hayden (RFA), DT, Bengals. Age: 26.

  58. John McCargo, DT, Buccaneers. Age: 29. — Signed with Bears
