2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Dolphins, Seahawks, Sick Individual

  • From Rick:

I can understand how you would think the Fins have issues in their defensive backfield (especially after the Cards and 2nd Pats game) but I think they are OK there (if they resign Bell, Goodman and Hill). The bigger problem on defense is the total lack of pass rush AND the fact their linebacker just flat out suck. Crowder had over a 100 tackles but I would bet that 99% of them were 5 plus yards down field. Akin Ayodele was invisible all year, Roth was very good against the run but that was it. Porter… well lets just say he is “slightly over rated”.

With all the problems they had on defense the Fins still ranked 9th overall in points allowed (the one stat the matters). With all that said if you look at the Ravens game the defense played well considering the position the offense kept putting them in.

The Fins need to address their offensive line early and often. The only player they have right now that is a sure thing is Jake Long. Smiley has finished the last two seasons on the IR. Satale is not the type of center Sparano wants. Thomas is a question mark and Carey may not even be back next season. IMO, the Fins need to draft at least two OT’s a center and a guard. I think the Fins will go with an OT in the first, someone like Britton (who you have going earlier then I think he will go) or Okung. I think they will follow that up with a center or guard.

I could even see them going with Duke Robinson in the first, Okung, Loadholt or Tupou with 2A and either Luigs, Caldwell or Wood (my favorite center) with 2B.

I do agree with your premise that the Fins need to address the WR and NT positions I really like the Brace pick but I also believe that push comes to shove the Fins can wait another year to address the NT position.

    My Response:

Great e-mail – I basically agree with everything you said. The thing is, they need a corner to start across from Goodman as well, so I really could see them going a multitude of directions in the draft. I think we’ll have to see what happens in free agency before getting a better idea of how the draft will go down.

I’m glad to hear that you called Joey Porter overrated. I’ve been saying so all year, and have gotten a lot of flack for it.

  • From Casey D.:

I have been a seahawks fan for over 35 years, their is no way President Ruskell will draft WR Crabtree with the 4th overall pick. You guys should do your research, the seahawks have too many wide receivers as it is. Ask your self, why draft a position you don’t need? Besides, the seahawks have dire need in the offensive line and safety position.

Under Jim mora, the offense run first and pass last. Men you guys are stupid!!!!

    My Response:

What receivers? Bobby Engram, 36, will be hitting free agency. Deion Branch, who is always hurt, could be a cap casualty. Nate Burleson stinks and is coming off a torn ACL. The rest of the wideouts are terrible. If the Seahawks don’t address the position, they can have fun struggling offensively next year. Hope that’s enough research right there.

The Steelers were the ultimate run-first team under Bill Cowher, correct? Then why did they spend a first-round pick on Santonio Holmes? Trust me, there’s a very good chance Crabtree is the pick.

  • From Casey H.:

Please help me understand some of the reasons why there can be so much variance on the “rating” of a particular player please- for example: you and Scouts Inc (or Todd McShay) both have Everette Brown rated in the top 15 players when Mayock and Kiper dont have him in the top 30…(not that I put too much credence in McShay as he has Sanchez rated higher than Stafford in yesterday’s TV interview but his board released yesterday puts Stafford ahead of Sanchez).

Also in today’s mock I understand your qualifier on pick #3 Sam Bradford largely depending on the Chiefs new GM etc…but won’t the Chiefs still need a DE somewhere in the first three rounds? (Maybe English rd 2 and caldwell rd 3 or something similiar??)

    My Response:

I don’t really know about McShay, but I know Matt McGuire doesn’t like him.

But as for the variance, it could be that the other two are just behind. Everette Brown had a great year. Maybe Kper and Mayock haven’t factored that in yet. And who knows what biases they have? If a guy doesn’t do an interview with them, they could always downgrade that player.

The Chiefs will definitely need a defensive end – you’re right. I just couldn’t fit one in without it being a reach. And the Chiefs can always sign one in free agency. Who knows what’ll happen there?

  • From John W.:

    You wrote the following:

5/22/08: Darrius Heyward-Bey was inconsistent in 2007. Then again, any receiver would have been with the garbage Maryland had at quarterback (Chris Turner and Jordan Steffy)

It takes a very sad “adult” to call two kids garbage. Better hope their fathers don’t meet up with you. Man you are one sick individual.

    My Response:

It’s perfectly fine for me to scrutinize them because they are public figures, just as it’s perfectly fine for you to criticize me for something that I write.

I would never criticize a high school kid (unless they did something illegal) but these Maryland quarterbacks are young adults who chose to play college football for a prominent university. No one forced them to do this. By putting themselves in the public eye, they opened themselves to criticism.

As for the “sick individual” part, I like to suggest that Al Davis drinks goat blood, and I bring up the brown dog from Duck Hunt whenever I talk about Plaxico Burress shooting himself, so maybe you’re right about that, haha.
