2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Josh Freeman, Eagles, Chiefs

  • From Chris R.:

I have to disagree with your pick of Chris Wells at this selection. The Jets have at least a couple of good years left with the combo of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. They can draft a RB in upcoming drafts. I also disagree with your assessment that Tannenbaum isnt going to sit on the hot seat for a young quarterback. Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff are both young and unproven QBs. Clemens being the only one with starts under his belt. So wouldnt Tannenbaum have to wait until either of those QBs develops? Josh Freeman played in an NFL pro-style offense and can compete with Clemens and Ratliff in training camp. Id rather see the Jets address this position than not at all. What about Kenny Britt getting selected at this slot?

    My Response:

The Jets don’t have a couple of years left with Thomas Jones. They’re refusing to extend him, which means it’s very likely that this is Jones’ final season in New York.

Tannenbauim drafted Kellen Clemens and obtained Brett Ratliff. Why would he suddenly give up on them? If the Jets had a new general manager, I’d agree with you. But if the Jets have a bad year or two, waiting for a young QB to develop, whose job will be on the line? Tannenbaum’s! He’s not dumb enough to fire himself with this draft pick. He’ll take the best player available – and that’s definitely not a receiver. Receivers fell out of the first round last year, and you’ll likely see the same thing happen again this year, save for Crabtree.

  • From Brian Y.:

we know the Eagles are prime jack***es, but come on, they’re not cocky enough to pass on Moreno twice! That would be completely moronic, but yet not surprising.

    My Response:

Andy Reid has never drafted a RB higher than Round 3, and he let Duce Staley walk after a great year. He just doesn’t put too much stock into the position.

That said, Reid has a history of being unpredictable, so I won’t completely dismiss Moreno or Chris Wells; it’s just very unlikely.

  • From Harry P.:

Love the site – but Washington 21st in the Power rankings? Yes, Daniel Snyder overpays in FA, but how can you say this team is worse than the playoff contenders the Skins were last year? Theyve got to be top 12 material surely.

    My Response:

Maybe… there’s just something about the Redskins that bothers me. I don’t trust Jim Zorn. Jason Campbell is inconsistent. His offensive line stinks. The pass rush might not be there. DeAngelo Hall may quit. Will Haynesworth live up to his contract? Too many questions for me.

  • From Jon R.:

Since the Chiefs are moving to the 3-4, what is doing to happen to Glenn Dorsey? I remember around January and February last year when almost every mock draft in the world had Dorsey going #1, the big debate was how would he fit in with the 3-4 defense because he can’t play NT and is too short for end, so the consensus was he could not fit in that scheme. So why are the Chiefs going to switch to a 3-4 when they just used the fifth pick in the draft on him a year ago and he seemingly does not fit in that scheme? Or would he be able to play end?

    My Response:

That’s the thing about the transition that doesn’t make much sense. What’s going to happen to Glenn Dorsey and Tamba Hali? I assume they’ll try Dorsey at 3-4 end. Maybe they’ll trade him on Draft Day. Rumor has it that if the Bucs were involved in a three-team deal for Matt Cassel, that Kansas City was going to ship Dorsey to Tampa.

But as for why they would make the switch to the 3-4 after drafting Dorsey? That’s because they’re under new management. New regimes sometimes don’t factor in past draft picks, which is just stupid. Remember what Eric Mangini did with the Jets – he had 4-3 personnel, but insisted on switching. Many of the players struggled in that scheme, but he didn’t care because he was in charge.
