2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Draft Week Questions
Now that the Draft is within a week away, I have some final draft questions.
1. If the Jaguars were to obtain Holt, and in the draft, Vontae Davis, Crabtree(and Maclin), and Raji were all available, who do you think they would choose?
2. If Maclin is available at #15 for the Texans, should they take him? Other prospects that are available: Matthews, Cushing, E. Brown, Tyson Jackson, and all RBs.
3. I think the Chargers take Oher if he is available but i doubt he will be, especially now that the Bills will be looking for a tackle. If he isn’t available, do the Chargers take Tyson jackson, Ayers, or E. Brown?
4. Will the Bucs take Freeman if he is available? Others available include Everette Brown, Ayers, L. English, C. matthews, and Cushing. Peria Jerry is NOT available. Does the Leftwich signing affect anything when it comes to Freeman?
5. Is Freeman a possibility for the Vikings if available? Or do they go with Vontae Davis or Percy Harvin?
My Response:
1. Even if the Jaguars obtain Torry Holt, they need another receiver. Of all of those players, I think the order of preference would be: Crabtree, Raji, Davis and Maclin… assuming they don’t trade down.
2. I have Maclin available for the Texans, and I don’t have them drafting him. Maclin is overrated, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he drops to No. 26 (Baltimore).
3. The Chargers would take Tyson Jackson in that scenario. Robert Ayers doesn’t fit the 3-4 and Everette Brown doesn’t fill a need. Eben Britton will be considered before Ayers and Brown.
4. The Bucs will definitely take Josh Freeman. New regimes mean new quarterbacks. Byron Leftwich has nothing to do with their decision.
5. The Vikings need to draft someone who will help them win this year. Josh Freeman doesn’t accomplish that. He’s not an option. I feel Darius Butler is a better bet for them because he can return kicks and help right away. Percy Harvin may have fallen out of Round 2.
Could you please address why, after spending the money on T.J. Houshmandzadeh, they would not pick one of the several good receivers in the later rounds? Do they need a No. 4 receiver or a cheaper, faster guy to match up?
My Response:
With Matt Hasselbeck, Walter Jones, Mike Wahle, Patrick Kerney, etc. aging by the minute, 2009 is their last chance. Tim Ruskell is going to draft the best player who can help them win now. T.J. Houshmandzadeh was a great addition to the receiving corps, but Deion Branch has missed about half of his games in Seattle, and is not reliable. If Aaron Curry falls to Seattle, he’s an option, but I don’t have that happening.
So, some reports say that the Chiefs may not be sold on Aaron Curry, so say that is true, where do you think he’d go? I wouldn’t think Seattle would take him, and not the Browns; they have more issues than for a ILB right? I just love the crazy draft turnarounds, something that happened that wasn’t really expected for the most part.
After the Jason Peters trade do you think that the Bills might want to package the 11th and the 28th picks for the fourth pick, say for Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith, and get that franchise LT, or fill other needs?
My Response:
I actually think there’s a good chance the Chiefs take Aaron Curry. All of these reports that they aren’t sold on him might be smokescreens.
If Curry does fall, I think Seattle is a realistic destination. They just traded away Julian Peterson. Cleveland would really be interested too. And the Raiders would also consider Curry because of his athleticism.
I don’t see the Bills moving into the top five. There’s too much money dedicated to top-five choices, and the Bills wouldn’t even pay Jason Peters what he wanted.
I am a huge Bears fan, I read your mock draft 09 and like every selection you have them getting except James Davis in the fifth. Although I think he is a fine RB, the Bears already have 4 RBs signed on the roster. I dont think there is much point in adding a fifth, you dont wanna take too many carries away from Matt Forte. What about possibly a CB? Or maybe a strongside LB?
My Response:
You’re probably not going to find a starter in the fifth round. Heck, you’ll be lucky if the guy you draft makes the team. James Davis is one of the best players available, and the Bears don’t really have a talented back behind Matt Forte. Davis would be excellent competition for those other backs you alluded to.
