2011 NFL Draft: Guard Rankings

The top 2011 offensive guard prospects available for the 2011 NFL Draft in which I believe they will be drafted.

Combine 40 Times: As I explained on Twitter (@walterfootball), the official Combine 40 times are incorrect, and they’ve been proven false via the NFL Network’s simul-cam.

For the 40 times, I use the NFL Network’s unofficial times, which are more accurate. NFL teams use their own timed 40s anyway, so the official 40s are meaningless.

  1. Mike Pouncey, G, Florida Scouting Report
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 303.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.23.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.12.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: . Arm: 32 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): Top 31 Pick.

3/16/11: Mike Pouncey had a good workout at his Pro Day (he didn’t run the 40). Pouncey announced that he has meetings set up with the Lions (13), Dolphins (15), Jaguars (16), Patriots (17, 28), Giants (19) and Buccaneers (20).

10/2/10: Pouncey’s most natural position is guard, and this is likely how he will be drafted if he goes in the first round. His strength, power at the point of attack and athleticism all rate on a very high level for him to be a force in the league.

4/4/10: Twin brother of Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Pouncey can play guard and center. He was a second-team All-SEC member in 2008 and an AP All-America second-teamer as a junior. The third member of an outstanding center class.

  2. Danny Watkins, G, Baylor Scouting Report
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 310.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.13.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.28.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 29. Arm: 34 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 2.

3/5/11: Like Phil Taylor, Danny Watkins had a great workout at Baylor’s Pro Day. The 26-year-old guard will likely be drafted in Round 2.

1/27/11: Danny Watkins would be a high second-round pick if he weren’t 27 years old. He looks great. A team ready to win now may take him in the third round.

1/26/11: Danny Watkins looks like he’s ready to play right now. Then again, that better be the case because he’s 27 years old. Watkins looked great Tuesday in the one-on-one matchups.

1/25/11: Danny Watkins would be much higher on this list if he weren’t 27 years old. Was taken fourth overall in the 2010 CFL Draft.

  3. Marcus Cannon, G, TCU
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 349.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.34.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.20.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 33. Arm: 34.
    Projected Round (2011): 2.

3/12/11: The one thing worth noting from Marcus Cannon’s Pro Day is that he weighed in at 349. He was 358 at the Combine.

2/27/11: Marcus Cannon weighed in at 6-5, 358. Based on his size, you’d expect him to be fat, slow and lethargic. On the contrary, Cannon did not appear as though he was anything close to 358. He ran a 5.20 40 and looked very fluid in all the drills. Cannon seems to have cemented his Round 2 status. He may even be selected at the end of Round 1 if a team believes he can play right tackle.

10/2/10: Cannon has been a physically dominant player for TCU this season as he will likely have to kick inside at the next level.

  4. Rodney Hudson, G/C, Florida State Scouting Report
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 299.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.21.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.22.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 27. Arm: 32 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 2-3.

3/17/11: Rodney Hudson weighed in at 299 at his Pro Day, which is important because he was able to keep the weight on since the Combine. Hudson had a really good workout, cementing his second-round status.

2/27/11: Rodney Hudson may not carry 299 pounds very well, but his weight gain didn’t seem to affect him in the drills. In fact, Hudson’s footwork is still as good as ever.

1/30/11: Rodney Hudson had a great Senior Bowl. Shifting between the left guard and right guard positions, Hudson constantly blasted open huge holes for his running backs. After a poor start to the week, Hudson finished extremely well, perhaps cementing his Round 2 status.

10/2/10: Hudson is simply too small for the NFL at this point and he would get killed against 320-pound defensive tackles. If he adds weight, he will lose athleticism, quickness and stamina. He’s a great college player, but we need to see if he can gain weight in the offseason in order to know if he can do it in the league.

4/4/10: An AP Second-Team All-American despite never being 100 percent all year.

  5. Orlando Franklin, G, Miami
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 319.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.24.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 26. Arm: 35.
    Projected Round (2011): 2-3.

3/27/11: Orlando Franklin doesn’t believe in running the 40, apparently. He had an OK Pro Day; most observers seemed to believe that he’s pretty much just a guard even thoug he has the arm length to be a tackle.

  6. Will Rackley, G/OT, Lehigh
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 309.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.27.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.39.
    Benchx225: 29. Arm: 33 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 2-3.

3/31/11: According to Charley Casserly, 16 offensive line coaches have met with Will Rackley. “You’re talking 2nd round here,” Casserly said on Path to the Draft.

3/25/11: Will Rackley worked out in front of 14 teams at Lehigh’s Pro Day, including the offensive line coaches of the Bengals, Vikings, Jets, Eagles and Seahawks. All but Seattle run a power-blocking scheme.

10/2/10: Rackley is one of the top sleeper prospects in the country.

  7. Clint Boling, G, Georgia
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 310.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.09.
    Combine 40 Time: .
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: 33 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 2-3.

4/3/10: Has done a great job filling in at left tackle for the constantly injured Trinton Sturdivant. Made the All-SEC Second Team in 2009.

  8. John Moffitt, G/C, Wisconsin
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 315.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.13.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.51.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 23. Arm: 33.
    Projected Round (2011): 3-4.

3/10/11: John Moffitt weighed in at 315 at his Pro Day (he was 319 at the Combine). He didn’t run the 40 – no one wanted to wait an eternity.

4/4/10: John Moffitt was an All-Big Ten first-teamer. Played center before the 2009 season.

  9. Lee Ziemba, G/OT, Auburn
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 317.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.15.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.47.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.44.
    Benchx225: 20. Arm: 34.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-5.

4/3/10: Had knee surgery in the past, but is still an athletic left tackle who could be chosen on Day 2.

  10. Steve Schilling, G, Michigan
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 307.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.02.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.16.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 30. Arm: 32 3/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

4/2/11: Steve Schilling stood on his Combine numbers at Michigan’s Pro Day.

1/25/11: Stephen Schilling drew a tough matchup against Cameron Jordan, but Jordan made the Michigan guard look like a helpless child in their one-on-one battle.

4/4/10: An All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2010.

  11. Demarcus Love, G/OT, Arkansas Scouting Report
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 315.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.13.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.29.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 27. Arm: 35 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

2/27/11: DeMarcus Love is a guard only. After watching him in the drills at the Combine, I’m further convinced that he can’t play right tackle.

1/30/11: Demarcus Love can’t play tackle. He really struggled in the Senior Bowl; on one play, he was beaten by Ryan Kerrigan and had to resort to holding the Purdue defensive end. This was a couple of plays after Love surrendered a sack to Kerrigan.

1/26/11: Demarcus Love looked slow and sluggish in Tuesday’s practice, and was beat a couple of times in the one-on-one drills.

10/2/10: Love is a developmental tackle at the next level. He has the physical tools, but he gets out of control and has no balance. He doesn’t know how to use his hands, has bad instincts and has poor footwork.

7/23/10: DeMarcus Love still has to improve his game, but athletic 315-pound left tackles don’t exactly grow on trees.

  12. Zach Hurd, G, Connecticut
    Height: 6-7. Weight: 316.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.24.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.30.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 25. Arm: 34 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

3/24/11: Zach Hurd posted 25 reps of 225 at his Pro Day. He didn’t bench at the Combine.

4/4/10: Made the All-Big East First Team after starting every game in 2009.

  13. David Arkin, G, Missouri State
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 300.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.22.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.28.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: 33 7/8.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

10/2/10: Arkin has very nice size and is a fluid athlete, but he isn’t a highly thought-of prospect at the moment.

  14. Andrew Jackson, G, Fresno State
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 299.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.16.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.27.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: 32 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

    4/4/10: An All-WAC first-teamer in 2009 and second-teamer in 2008.

  15. Keith Williams, G, Nebraska
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 318.
    Projected 40 Time: N/A.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.28.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: 23. Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 5-7.

  16. Justin Boren, G, Ohio State
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 309.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.17.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.47.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.21.
    Benchx225: 28. Arm: 33 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

4/4/10: A rare sight: a Michigan player who transferred to Ohio State. Justin Boren qualified for the All-Big Ten First Team in 2009.

  17. Darius Morris, G/OT, Temple
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 319.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.26.
    Combine 40 Time: .
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

10/2/10: Morris might be this year’s Rodger Saffold. He’s a versatile linemen with good strength, competitiveness, and a nice overall skill set. We like his ability to play both guard positions and right tackle in the league.

  18. Julian Vandervelde, G, Iowa
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 302.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.25.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.14.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.09.
    Benchx225: 25. Arm: 32 3/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.

  19. Caleb Schlauderaff, G, Utah
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 302.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.15.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: . Arm: 32 1/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

4/4/10: Voted in as an All-Mountain West second-teamer as a junior.

  20. Carl Johnson, G/RT, Florida
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 361.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.45.
    Combine 40 Time: 5.44.
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: 36 1/2.
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

4/4/10: Was highly recruited coming out of high school, but had a disappointing junior campaign.

  21. Thomas Claiborne, G, Boston College
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 342.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.27.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.59.
    Benchx225: . Arm: 33 3/4.
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

4/4/10: An honorable mention on the All-ACC Team the past two years.

  22. Bryant Browning, G, Ohio State
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 312.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.45.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
    Benchx225: 24. Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

4/4/10: Struggled at right tackle, but made a smooth transition to guard. Was an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2009.

  23. Mike Huey, G, Texas
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 304.
    Projected 40 Time: N/A.
    Combine 40 Time: DNP.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 5.16.
    Benchx225: 35. Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

  24. Anthony Morgan, G, Oklahoma State

    Projected 40 Time: 5.30.
    Combine 40 Time: .
    Pro Day 40 Time: .
    Benchx225: . Arm: .
    Projected Round (2011): 7-FA.

4/4/10: A JUCO transfer, Anthony Morgan started in his first year at Oklahoma State.

  25. John Bender, G, Nevada

    Projected 40 Time: 5.33.
