2020 NFL Scouting Combine Team Thoughts on Workouts
This is the 2020 NFL Combine Stock Report for the defensive linemen. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.
Ross Blacklock, DE/DT, TCU
Ross Blacklock was one of the top performers in the drills Saturday, perhaps thriving most in the hoop drill. Blacklock was also a winner when it came to his workout numbers; he posted a 4.91 40-yard time with a 1.70 10-yard split.
Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
Derrick Brown didn’t have a 40 time that stood out (5.11 with a 1.78 split), but those times were pretty stellar for a 326-pound defensive tackle. More importantly, Brown was amazing in the drills. He looked like one of the top prospects in this draft class, which is exactly what he is. His 3-cone time was horrible (8.22), but that was the only real blemish for him during the combine.
Carlos and Khalil Davis, DTs, Nebraska
I’m lumping in Carlos Davis and Khalil Davis together. They’re twin brothers from Nebraska, and both ran very similarly. Carlos and Khalil posted 4.82 and 4.76 40s, respectively, though Carlos is five pounds heavier than Khalil. They may have created some buzz with their impressive workout numbers, so I wanted to mention them despite there not being a stock-up grade. The reason I’m not giving them a stock-up arrow is because I thought they looked pretty rough in the drills when it came to changing directions. Still, their numbers will force teams to investigate their film further.
Jordan Elliott, DT, Missouri
Jordan Elliott didn’t have a very good showing at the combine. His times were solid – 5.03 40, 1.71 split – but he looked very sloppy in the drills. I was expecting him to do better than what he displayed.
A.J. Epenesa, DE/OLB, Iowa
A.J. Epenesa posted some ghastly workout numbers at the combine. He ran a 5.04 40-yard dash with a slow 1.78 split. He managed just 32.5 inches in the vertical and 9-9 in the broad jump. No one was expecting Epenesa to do well at the combine, but I don’t think many thought his numbers, outside of his 3-cone (7.34), would be this bad.
Alex Highsmith, DE/OLB, Charlotte
Alex Highsmith stood out most in the drills. He looked very fluid in most of them, so he definitely helped himself. His solid testing numbers won’t hurt either; he had a 1.68 10-yard split to go along with a 7.32 3-cone and a 10-5 broad jump.
James Lynch, DE/DT, Baylor
James Lynch tested better than many expected. He finished in the 70th percentile or higher in everything except the vertical. His best figures were the 7.39 3-cone and 9-3 broad jump. His 1.73 10-yard split was solid as well.
Justin Madubuike, DT, Texas A&M
Justin Madubuike was one of the top defensive tackles at the combine. In addition to his stellar showing in the drills, Madubuike posted some terrific testing numbers. He ran a 4.83 40 with a 1.73 10-yard split. He also clocked in at 7.37 in the 3-cone.
Malcolm Roach, DT, Texas
Malcolm Roach may have moved into day-two consideration in the wake of his strong combine showing. Roach looked good in the drills after posting a 4.84 40-yard dash with a fast 1.68 10-yard split.
Alton Robinson, DE, Syracuse
Alton Robinson was able to bend very well in the edge-rushing drills, capping off a great evening for him that started with a solid 4.69 40-yard dash and 1.65 10-yard split. His 3-cone (7.32) and vertical (35.5) impressed as well.
James Smith-Williams, DE, N.C. State
James Smith-Williams suffered a very rare injury during the combine when he cut his elbow while doing the vertical jump. He posted a solid 32-inch result to go along with his 10-3 broad jump. He then thrived in the 40, clocking in at 4.60 with a 10-yard split of 1.62.
Derrek Tuszka, DE, North Dakota State
Derrek Tuszka registered the only 3-cone time faster than seven seconds among defensive linemen. He had a 6.87 to go along with his 1.69 10-yard split and 10-foot broad jump. Derrek Tuszka was very productive at North Dakota State, so it was nice to see him compete athletically with some of the major-school prospects.
Jabari Zuniga, DE, Florida
Jabari Zuniga was the best-testing defensive end at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. He zoomed a 4.64 40 with a 1.61 10-yard split despite weighing 264 pounds. He also notched a 10-7 broad jump and a 33-inch vertical.
