2017 Fantasy Football Rankings - Wide Receivers (Sept. 6):
Top 10 | 11-20 | 21-40 | 41-60 | 61-100
- Donte Moncrief, WR, Colts. Bye: 11.
SEPT. 5 UPDATE: One more update on Andrew Luck: It’s official now that Luck will be sidelined Week 1. The fact that the Colts ruled him out so early in the week suggests that he won’t be available Week 2 either. I would stay away from all Colt players unless they fall far in your draft.
AUG. 5 UPDATE: Donte Moncrief suffered a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, according to George Bremer, The Herald Bulletin. Moncrief is quickly becoming known for being fragile, as his 2016 campaign was mired by a shoulder injury as well. Moncrief is going to miss just a few days with this, but it’s discouraging that he’s already dealing with shoulder problems again.
AUG. 1 UPDATE: Jason La Canfora said he has heard rumblings about Luck beginning the year on the reserve/PUP list because of his shoulder issues. That would mean he would miss six games. Meanwhile, general manager Chris Ballard told the media that Luck will be activated from the active/PUP list prior to Week 1. This could be wishful thinking on Ballard’s part, however, and even if Luck is activated, there’s no guarantee that he’ll play early on. And even if he does, he may not be 100 percent. This is obviously bad news for Luck’s outlook, and he should be avoided unless he falls numerous rounds. His supporting cast should be avoided as well.
JULY 30 UPDATE: Andrew Luck wouldn’t commit to playing in Week 1. When asked about it, Luck said, “It’s hard for me to look beyond, really, today’s rehab session.” Luck is a risky fantasy pick because the status of his shoulder is unclear, and even if he returns, he may not be 100 percent. T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief and Jack Doyle all have troubling outlooks as well.
Donte Moncrief was limited to just seven full games in 2016, thanks to multiple injuries. He caught 30 passes for 307 yards and seven touchdowns in those contests. Moncrief turns just 24 in August, so he could be a possible WR2 breakout candidate if he can manage to stay healthy.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 67 catches. 880 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 197.
- John Brown, WR, Cardinals. Bye: 8.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: John Brown has moved around a lot in my fantasy football rankings. I was initially down on him, then high when I learned he was in great shape, but then dropped him considerably after Bruce Arians criticized his health. Brown could be moving back up after his performance in the third preseason game. Brown looked great, catching two passes for 49 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His first was a perfect 28-yard bomb from Carson Palmer. The second saw Brown make an impressive over-the-shoulder grab from Drew Stanton. Brown could have a huge year if he can stay healthy, but that still is a concern.
AUG. 18 UPDATE: Bruce Arians questioned John Brown’s ability to keep playing with the Cardinals because of his sickle-cell trait. Arians said Brown would have to fully recover and then even talked about replacing him. I liked Brown as a sleeper, but I would now recommend J.J. Nelson instead in light of Arians’ comments.
AUG 16 UPDATE: John Brown was reportedly back from a quad injury, but said he’s not going to rush back. Brown said he’s using caution to return, so he won’t play in the second preseason game. Brown is being smart by being patient, but this is a reminder that he’s fragile. I’ve liked Brown this year, but it would be crazy not to acknowledge that he comes with substantial risk.
JULY 29 UPDATE: John Brown will be out a week or so with a quad injury, per Kent Somers, AZ Central. It’s a shame to hear this news because Brown was reportedly in great shape. A quad may not be a big deal at all, but soft-tissue injuries have been known to linger, especially in receivers.
JULY 26 UPDATE: John Brown has added 12 pounds of muscle this offseason, per Josh Weinfuss, ESPN. It’s nice to see Brown working extremely hard following his worst year in the pros, which was mired by injuries. Brown is a great buy-low candidate despite Carson Palmer’s regression.
MAY 17 UPDATE: Carson Palmer told the media that John Brown looks stronger and more explosive. Brown was sick all last year with a sickle-cell issue, so he seems poised to have a bounce-back 2017 campaign. The only issue is whether Palmer will keep regressing.
John Brown was a big-time bust candidate on the site last year, as he was hurt in the preseason, while Carson Palmer didn’t look quite right. Brown had an injury-ridden 2016 campaign in which he caught only 39 passes. Assuming he’s healthy entering 2017 – and I haven’t heard otherwise – I’m expecting Brown to bounce back.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 900 total yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 130.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 190.
- Jeremy Maclin, WR, Ravens. Bye: 10.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: With Joe Flacco out once again, there isn’t much to say about the Baltimore offense in the third preseason game. The biggest take-away is that while Jeremy Maclin played, he didn’t catch a single pass. In fact, Maclin was confused on one occasion, as he didn’t know which play the Ravens were about to run. Maclin was also whistled for an illegal crack-back block, negating a 17-yard run. It wasn’t a good look for Maclin, who will need to clean up his act.
JULY 27 UPDATE: Joe Flacco could be out 1-6 weeks because of a back problem. Jeremy Maclin is the top fantasy player could be affected by this. Flacco could be just fine – I discussed this in the NFL Disaster Grades page – but there’s still some risk with all Baltimore players now.
JUNE 13 UPDATE: Jeremy Maclin signed with the Ravens. Maclin was injured throughout 2016, but he’s only 29 and is set to rebound. He’s in a better situation now that he signed with Baltimore. Joe Flacco isn’t elite by any means, but he’s better than Alex Smith.
Jeremy Maclin was released, but this could be a good thing for his fantasy outlook. He could be paired with a better quarterback than Alex Smith, which would be a boon to his fantasy stock.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 70 catches. 930 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 129.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 199.
- Corey Davis, WR, Titans. Bye: 8.
AUG. 5 UPDATE: Corey Davis will be out for a week with a hamstring injury. Davis might be back for the third preseason contest, but it’s always difficult to tell with soft-tissue injuries. Davis needs the reps to have a better chance of being effective as a rookie.
JUNE 19 UPDATE: Both Corey Davis and Rishard Matthews’ fantasy outlook took a hit with the Titans’ signing of Eric Decker. There will obviously be fewer targets to spread around.
At least one team was going to pass on Corey Davis in the second round because of durability concerns. Davis was overdrafted, but he’ll serve as a big target for Marcus Mariota, who is excellent in the red zone. Steve Smith compared Davis to Terrell Owens, so there’s definitely upside here.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 850 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 128.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 186.
- Willie Snead, WR, Saints. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 1 UPDATE: Willie Snead has been suspended for three games. If everyone knows this, Snead could provide some value very late in your draft.
Willie Snead became a reliable target for Drew Brees over the past couple of years, catching 69 passes for 984 yards in 2015 and then posting a 72-895-4 line this past season. Snead’s arrow is pointing up with Brandin Cooks gone.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 76 catches. 970 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 203.
- J.J. Nelson, WR, Cardinals. Bye: 8.
AUG. 20 UPDATE: With John Brown’s season in doubt, J.J. Nelson continues to look better for fantasy purposes. Nelson tied for the team lead with four targets against the Bears, catching two of them for 26 yards.
J.J. Nelson had some huge games in 2016, but was an inconsistent producer. He’ll be better in 2017, though he’s still just Arizona’s No. 3 receiver unless either Larry Fitzgerald or John Brown gets hurt.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 60 catches. 870 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 127.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.
- Ted Ginn, WR, Saints. Bye: 5.
SEPT. 1 UPDATE: Ted Ginn’s value has increased in the wake of Willie Snead’s three-game suspension. I wouldn’t go crazy with him, but Ginn is a decent option in the double-digit rounds.
I’m not sure why Ted Ginn keeps leaving the Panthers, as he has never produced outside of Carolina. He’ll have a chance in New Orleans, but no one should feel too optimistic.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 61 catches. 900 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.
- Taylor Gabriel, WR, Falcons. Bye: 5.
Taylor Gabriel’s stat line from 2016 – 35 catches, 579 yards – doesn’t tell the whole story. He was barely used until Week 8 against the Packers, when he caught three passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Gabriel caught at least three balls in every game after that, save for one. Gabriel is a special talent whose role will continue to increase, and he’ll likely be the No. 2 option in the downfield passing game before long.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 58 catches. 840 yards. 7 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 184.
- Kevin White, WR, Bears. Bye: 9.
AUG. 28 UPDATE: Kevin White will have to live up to his first-round billing with Cameron Meredith out for the year. The problem is that White is so inconsistent, but he’ll at least have the opportunity. White caught just two passes for 30 yards in more than a half of action. However, he also drew an interference flag in the end zone.
AUG. 1 UPDATE: Kevin White has been struggling with confidence in practice, per Rich Campbell, Chicago Tribune. Not with girls, or anything, but he reportedly doesn’t trust his twice-surgically repaired leg. White had received positive press earlier in the offseason, but this is an obvious setback for his fantasy outlook.
JUNE 17 UPDATE: Kevin White is at “full speed,” according to Rich Campbell, Chicago Tribune. White has struggled to stay healthy, playing four of 32 potential games in his career thus far. However, it sounds like he’s 100 percent now, so he’s worth a shot at his 12.01 ADP.
MAY 19 UPDATE: John Fox praised Kevin White’s offseason. Fox called White “very healthy” and said that he has been working very hard this spring. White completely bombed last year, but that could mean that he might provide a ton of value late in fantasy drafts this summer. With Alshon Jeffery gone, he’s the No. 1 receiver.
Kevin White has played in just four of 32 possible games thus far in his career, and one more injury-prone campaign could force Chicago’s hand. White wasn’t very good when on the field, as his best game saw his post a 6-62 line. White has big upside, however, so I wouldn’t think it were crazy if you took him as a late-round flier.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 67 catches. 800 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 126.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 193.
- Mike Wallace, WR, Ravens. Bye: 10.
Mike Wallace was a predictable disappointment in his first year as a Raven. He eclipsed 1,000 yards, but scored only four times. Wallace has become such an inconsistent deep threat that he consistently posts pedestrian fantasy stats. Wallace turns 31 this offseason and will lose his speed soon.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 69 catches. 950 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 125.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 194.
- Tyler Lockett, WR, Seahawks. Bye: 6.
AUG. 19 UPDATE: Kasen Williams was trending on Twitter for his 27-yard catch over Xavier Rhodes in the second preseason game. Williams looked good, catching two balls for 28 yards and a touchdown. He nearly secured a second score on a deep Russell Wilson pass, but a Minnesota defensive back committed an uncalled defensive pass interference that ruined a potential big play. I wouldn’t recommend Williams as a late-round pick just yet, but he’s worth monitoring. Plus, his emergence complicates things for Tyler Lockett, who has his injury issues.
Tyler Lockett was a promising player heading into 2016, but his season was derailed twice. He hurt his knee in the early going and was limited until about Week 13. He caught 16 balls for 234 yards and scored two touchdowns in the next three games, but broke his leg in Week 16. Lockett is expected to be ready for Week 1, making him a nice, buy-low fantasy option.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 62 catches. 850 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 125.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.
- Zay Jones, WR, Bills. Bye: 6.
AUG. 27 UPDATE: It was good news-bad news for Zay Jones in his third preseason game. The good news is that he saw a combined nine targets from Tyrod Taylor and Nathan Peterman, leading the team in that category. He also drew an interference flag in the end zone. The bad news is that he came up with just three receptions for 28 yards. The 33-percent completion rate was a byproduct of poor quarterbacking and a pair of drops. Still, I’m inclined to give Jones a stock-up arrow for his usage.
AUG. 21 UPDATE: With Anquan Boldin retiring and Jordan Matthews nursing an injury, Zay Jones is Buffalo’s lone remaining viable receiver. It’s hard to like any non-running back in Buffalo’s offense, but Jones is definitely draftable. Unfortunately, Boldin’s retirement could bump Jones’ ADP.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: With Jordan Matthews injured, Zay Jones deserves a stock up. I’m not crazy about him because he’s a rookie playing in a middling passing attack, but he’s not a bad late-round option.
JUNE 9 UPDATE: Zay Jones returned to practice this week. His quick recovery is obviously very encouraging, and he could be Buffalo’s go-to weapon if the team doesn’t sign Jeremy Maclin and can’t get Sammy Watkins healthy.
MAY 19 UPDATE: Zay Jones is week-to-week with a knee sprain. Both Buffalo wide receivers are hurt, as Sammy Watkins is missing time with a foot issue. Jones should be ready for training camp, but as a rookie, he needs all the reps he can get.
Zay Jones is likely going to be Buffalo’s No. 2 receiver this season, but he’ll be the top wideout the following year because the Bills are allowing Sammy Watkins to walk for some reason. Jones has WR2 potential for the future, but as for now, he’s a WR4 without much upside because of Tyrod Taylor.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 63 catches. 800 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 125.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 188.
- Adam Thielen, WR, Vikings. Bye: 9.
Adam Thielen came out of nowhere to catch 69 passes for 967 yards and five touchdowns last year, as Sam Bradford and his limited arm had to rely on Thielen. He should be able to repeat those numbers this upcoming season.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 68 catches. 940 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 124.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.
- Marvin Jones, WR, Lions. Bye: 7.
JUNE 12 UPDATE: I discussed how Taylor Decker’s injury will affect the Lions in the Disaster Grades, but haven’t mentioned him when it comes to fantasy football. Decker’s absence will obviously adversely affect the numbers of Matthew Stafford and his supporting cast. Stafford struggled at the end of 2016 when he lost Travis Swanson, and Decker is just about as important as Swanson is to the offense. Granted, Stafford also hurt his finger, which affected his play a bit, but there’s no doubt that Swanson’s injury played a factor. Decker’s absence could have similar consequences, and it’ll also affect Marvin Jones.
Marvin Jones got off to a hot start in Detroit, but faded down the stretch. He caught more than four passes just once after Week 4. It was a major disappointment, but perhaps Jones will be able to rebound in 2017.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 65 catches. 930 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 188.
- Cooper Kupp, WR, Rams. Bye: 8.
Jared Goff’s favorite receiver appears to be third-round rookie Cooper Kupp. The third-round rookie saw a team-high seven targets at Oakland, catching six of them for 70 yards and a touchdown. His score was a 23-yarder on a busted coverage, but Kupp is an impressive rookie nonetheless.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 69 catches. 790 yards. 4 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 123.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 192.
- Jordan Matthews, WR, Bills. Bye: 6.
AUG. 15 UPDATE: Jordan Matthews is out for several weeks with a chipped sternum. Matthews suffered the injury 15 minutes into his first practice with the Bills. Given that Matthews won’t be able to acclimate himself into the offense, he’ll have a steep learning curve. I wouldn’t draft him right now as a result. Zay Jones, meanwhile, looks more appealing.
AUG. 11 UPDATE: Jordan Matthews was traded to the Bills. He’ll be their No. 1 receiver, so he’ll have more of an impact in their offense than he would’ve had in Philadelphia as a slot player.
AUG. 11 UPDATE; The Eagles may have signed Alshon Jeffery, but Jordan Matthews should not be forgotten. Carson Wentz targeted Matthews thrice on the opening drive alone, and Matthews rewarded him with three grabs for 18 yards. He had a nice spin move to elude Morgan Burnett to pick up a first down, seconds after Rich Gannon praised the Packers’ safeties for being great tacklers. Matthews is worth a late-round fantasy selection.
Jordan Matthews was often overmatched as a No. 1 receiver, which would explain why Philadelphia signed both Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. Now the No. 3 receiver, Matthews isn’t very fantasy-relevant anymore.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 56 catches. 760 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 122.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 178.
- Kendall Wright, WR, Bears. Bye: 9.
Kendall Wright had a nice performance against his former team. Wright caught three of his four targets for 35 yards, as he was clearly motivated to show up the Titans. He’ll see an uptick in targets in the wake of Cameron Meredith’s injury.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 0 catches. 0 yards. 0 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 120.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 187.
- Rishard Matthews, WR, Titans. Bye: 8.
AUG. 30 UPDATE: Corey Davis has returned to practice. Davis is set to be ready Week 1. It’s been nearly a month since he’s practiced, but he has the talent to be a breakout player early in the season. His 10.01 ADP seems reasonable.
JUNE 19 UPDATE: Both Corey Davis and Rishard Matthews’ fantasy outlook took a hit with the Titans’ signing of Eric Decker. There will obviously be fewer targets to spread around.
Rishard Matthews emerged as Marcus Mariota’s No. 1 receiver this past season. Rishard Matthews caught 65 passes for 945 yards and nine touchdowns in his first season in Tennessee. It’s worth noting that he had his three 100-yard games following Week 11. Matthews has WR2 potential this upcoming season, though Corey Davis’ presence hurts his chances slightly.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 54 catches. 810 yards. 6 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 117.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 171.
- Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins. Bye: 5.
AUG. 8 UPDATE: Josh Doctson left practice Sunday with a hamstring injury. Doctson should rename himself Mr. Glass at this point. I’d like to recommend Doctson as a late-round sleeper, but I have no faith that he can stay healthy.
JULY 28 UPDATE: Josh Doctson is looking great in Redskins practice, per Master Tesfatsion, Washington Post. I’d like to see Doctson produce in preseason games before I recommend him as a late-round fantasy sleeper, but this is at least good news for him.
Josh Doctson was dealing with a lingering Achilles injury in July. He declared himself as a fast healer, but played just two games in 2016. Doctson has promise as a first-round pick, but he’ll have to prove himself. Doctson is a sleeper candidate, but we still haven’t seen him perform on a high level.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 50 catches. 710 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 166.
- Josh Gordon, WR, Browns. Bye: 9.
Josh Gordon could be one of the top receivers in the NFL if he had his head screwed on straight. Unfortunately, he can’t stop getting suspended. Gordon actually underwent rehab, so we’ll see if that helped. I have my doubts. Gordon hasn’t played a game in two years.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Stats: 44 catches. 660 yards. 5 total TDs.
Projected 2017 Fantasy Points: 116.
Projected 2017 PPR Fantasy Points: 160.
