2010 NFL Draft E-mails – AFC (Post Draft)
I was just curious as to why you gave the Bills draft a D, when the only pick you had at a D or F was Spiller. I also would like to know why it is such a terrible pick to take the most explosive player in the draft, rather than reach for Bulaga (23) Williams (26) or Clausen (48). I know you are the biggest Clausen supporter, that is fine. However, I really feel your bias against the Bills draft has to do with them not taking the player you think they should have.
–> To win consistently in today’s NFL, you need a good quarterback, you need to protect your quarterback and you need to get to the other quarterback.
The Bills can’t do any of those things. They will continue to be a miserable team unless they start building their team in the correct fashion.
“9. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson “We need a quarterback, left tackle and nose tackle! We don’t need a running back! Let’s take a running back!” This is why the Bills continue to pick in the top 12 every year. C.J. Spiller should be a dynamic talent in the NFL, but wow. I’m disgusted. (Pick Grade: F)”- Walter Football 4/22
“C.J… Spiller is the most talented running back in this class”- Walter Football 4/29
How does this make any sense? Spiller is the exact player I wanted the Bills to draft the whole time. I’ll take a potential 2,000-yard rusher all day.
–> Three of the best running backs (Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Frank Gore) didn’t make the playoffs last year. Running backs just aren’t that important in today’s NFL.
Here’s an impressive stat: Of the 12 quarterbacks in the playoffs last year, all but three (Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Tony Romo) were taken at Pick No. 33 or earlier. Of the 12 starting running backs in the playoffs last year, only six were drafted in the first round.
You can get good running backs anywhere, and spending the No. 9 overall pick on a sub-200-pound guy who will be playing in the slot this year is ridiculous.
As a Bills fan, you should not be defending this pick. If you were a true Bills fan, you’d protest.
Unfortunately, it seems like the front office does a better job of brainwashing its fans than assembling talent.
How do you give the Rolando McClain pick a (D) ????? We just got the No. 1 ILB in the draft and a leader and winner to QB our defense.
–> You don’t take an inside linebacker in the top eight. Inside linebackers, particularly ones who aren’t very good in coverage, aren’t worth a top-eight pick. They just don’t impact the game like players from other positions do.
I graded the Raiders’ overall 2010 NFL Draft as an A – but I didn’t like that pick.
Josh McDaniels is in the process of brainwashing everyone in Denver right now… He so far has traded away anyone who voiced up their opinions against him. Now I know coaches and players clash from time to time, but to legitimately destroy a team ready to make a push towards a championship to rebuilding on all fronts takes something special. Cutler, Marshall, Hillis, Sheffler… all those players contributed big time. My guess is if Eddie Royal underperforms to McD’s standard OR learns to speak he won’t be in Denver in a year… now just imagine if Clady talks back to McD… suppose they need to draft a new franchise left tackle? Not that left tackle matters anymore you need a franchise right tackle to protect Tebow…
Denver fans im very sorry for the way your organization is treating you all… you deserve much better than this. My bid for Jerks of the Week is the Broncos organization for trading away their dreams of chasing a championship… they just needed a defense to match their high-powered offense a couple of seasons ago, but now everything is down the drain.
–> It really is a shame that Broncos fans have to go through this. As you said, this defense paired with the 2008 offense would make Denver one of the top teams in the league. Instead, Josh McDaniels has ruined everything.
Why do you think Donovan Warren werent drafted? He was rated highly by most scouts, at least I thought so. Do you think he’ll be successful with the Jets?
–> Donovan Warren wasn’t drafted because of his 4.65 40 time. There just aren’t many (if any) corners in this league who run a 4.6 or slower. The most prominent bad-40 corner who comes to mind is Chris McAlister (4.57).
I like Warren. The Jets do need help at free safety, so I think he’ll make a strong push for the starting gig this season.
