Combine 40 Times: As I explained on Twitter (@walterfootball), the official Combine 40 times are incorrect, and they’ve been proven false via the NFL Network’s simul-cam.
For the 40 times, I use the NFL Network’s unofficial times, which are more accurate. NFL teams use their own timed 40s anyway, so the official 40s are meaningless.

Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU – Scouting Report
Height: 6-0. Weight: 218.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Combine 40 Time: 4.32.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 15. Vertical: 38. Arm: 32.
Projected Round (2011): Top 6 Pick.
3/15/11: Patrick Peterson didn’t run the 40 or anything at his Pro Day, but he looked great in the drills once again. He scheduled a private workout with the Denver Broncos. At this point, it’ll be a major upset if Peterson falls out of the top four picks.
3/2/11: Patrick Peterson confirmed that he’s the best cornerback prospect since Charles Woodson on Tuesday. Despite measuring in at 6-0, 219, he ran a 4.32 40 and notched a 38-inch vertical. Like Woodson, Peterson has the size and speed to play multiple positions on defense. He won’t be the No. 1 pick, but he can go as high as No. 3 to Buffalo. I don’t see him falling past Cincinnati.
1/28/11: Write-ups for these rankings will be added later; there were “personnel complications” on the site, which is why these rankings haven’t been updated in a while.
10/9/10: Peterson has really shown how dominant of a punt returner he is this season. His speed and vision really speak volumes as a return man, but he’s also been a beast in run support and in coverage this season. He could go as high as the top three picks especially with the Detroit Lions in need of a cornerback.
5/13/10: One of the top cornerback prospects to come along in a very long time, Patrick Peterson broke up 13 passes in 2009.

Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska – Scouting Report
Height: 6-0. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Combine 40 Time: 4.37.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: 38. Arm: 30 1/2.
Projected Round (2011): Top 13 Pick.
3/11/11: Prince Amukamara stood on his Combine numbers. The thing worth noting is that the Bengals sent their defensive backs coach to Nebraska’s Pro Day – an indication that they’re interested in Amukamara. It could also mean that they’re looking for a contingency plan if Patrick Peterson is off the board at No. 4 (which obviously means that they’d draft Peterson if he’s there).
3/2/11: Prince Amukamara shouldn’t need a stock up, but apparently there was some speculation that he would have to play free safety in the NFL. I’m not even sure where that came from, but Amukamara dispelled that notion with a 4.37 40 and 38-inch vertical. He also looked great in the drills.
10/9/10: Amukamara is still playing at a very high level and he looks like he’s in a battle with Peterson for the No. 1 corner spot.
5/13/10: Prince Amukamara had a dominant junior campaign, collecting 64 tackles, three TFL, 11 passes broken up and five interceptions.

Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado – Scouting Report
Height: 6-2. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Combine 40 Time: 4.38.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 37. Arm: 32 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): Top 25 Pick.
3/10/11: Jimmy Smith didn’t run the 40 at Colorado’s Pro Day, but improved upon his vertical (37 inches; 36 at the Combine). However, Smith’s issue isn’t talent; he has character concerns great enough to keep the Lions away at No. 13.
3/2/11: Jimmy Smith is a top-15 talent. On Tuesday, he ran a 4.38 at 6-2, 211. He also had a 36-inch vertical. Unfortunately, Smith has major character concerns. He tested positive for drugs at Colorado and was also arrested twice. During the team interviews, Smith reportedly admitted to only one arrest, which draws yet another red flag.
5/13/10: A massive corner with solid speed, Jimmy Smith broke up seven passes in 2009.
-
Aaron Williams, CB/FS, Texas – Scouting Report
Height: 6-0. Weight: 204.
Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
Combine 40 Time: 4.52.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.44.
Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 37.5. Arm: 31 1/2.
Projected Round (2011): 1-2.
3/30/11: The Steelers and Lions sent all their coaches to watch Aaron Williams as Texas’ Pro Day. Williams, a great fit for Mike Tomlin’s coverage scheme, did not disappoint.
3/2/11: Aaron Williams ran a decent 4.52 40 at 6-0, 204. During the drills, however, Mike Mayock and Deion Sanders remarked that Williams was “all over the place.” Mayock said he believes that Williams may have to move to free safety in the NFL.
10/9/10: I have yet to see some tape on Williams, but I’ve heard from a couple sources he hasn’t played up to his potential this season. Some scouts love Williams, but some think he’s overrated.
5/13/10: Another superstar rising junior cornerback, Aaron Williams likely won’t make it into the second half of Round 1.

Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia – Scouting Report
Height: 6-1. Weight: 198.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Combine 40 Time: 4.40.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.37.
Benchx225: 19. Vertical: . Arm: 31.
Projected Round (2011): 2.
4/6/11: Ras-I Dowling was finally able to complete a workout. During his personal Pro Day, Dowling ran a 4.37 40, and notched a vertical of 38 inches and a broad jump of 10-8. Dowling looked good in the drills and helped his case to be a second-round pick.
3/30/11: Will Ras-I Dowling ever be healthy? Dowling, whose Combine was cut short because of an injured hamstring, couldn’t perform at his Pro Day.
3/2/11: Ras-I Dowling, at 6-1, 198, ran a 4.40 40 despite pulling up lame with a hamstring injury at the 35-yard mark. Dowling sat out the rest of the afternoon.
10/9/10: Dowling recorded eight tackles and one pass breakup against Florida State last week. He was hurt the first three games, but has made his presence felt this season and looks like a first-round pick.
5/13/10: Ras-I Dowling had 58 tackles, 2.5 TFL and eight passes broken up. His 40 is a concern; we all saw what happened to Donovan Warren two weeks ago.
-
Brandon Harris, CB, Miami – Scouting Report
Height: 5-10. Weight: 194.
Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Combine 40 Time: 4.43.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: 35.5. Arm: 30 5/8.
Projected Round (2011): 2.
3/27/11: Brandon Harris didn’t run the 40 at his Pro Day. He actually had a worse vertical leap (34.5) than he did at the Combine. Charley Casserly isn’t impressed with Harris, stating that he’s a “fourth corner” on a team. Considering Casserly’s dubious draft history, this is great news for the Miami corner.
3/2/11: Brandon Harris ran a decent 40 (4.43), but he really shined in the drills. In fact, Deion Sanders said Harris was the best cornerback he saw on the field. “He’s been ballin’,” Sanders said.
10/9/10: Harris is a baller – period. On tape, he produces and plays with the swagger and confidence you want to see out of a cornerback. He’s a missle in run support and shows the ability to take on a block. In coverage, receivers really struggle to separate and offensive coordinators have stopped calling plays his way this season.
5/13/10: Brandon Harris broke up a whopping 15 passes last year and also had six TFL.
-
Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
Height: 6-0. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.40.
Combine 40 Time: 4.51.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 10. Vertical: 39.5. Arm: 32 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): 2-3.
3/2/11: Curtis Brown didn’t run a great 40 (4.51), but he made several spectacular catches in the drills. He also notched a 39.5-inch vertical.
10/9/10: Brown is a very talented player who is not afraid to come up and hit someone. You have to love the way he plays the game and he’ll get drafted in the top 60 picks.
5/13/10: Curtis Brown, an All-Big XII honorable mention, broke up seven passes in 2009. He has the best triangle numbers of any top corner eligible for the 2011 NFL Draft.
-
Davon House, CB, New Mexico State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 200.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Combine 40 Time: 4.43.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.35.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 33.5. Arm: 31 7/8.
Projected Round (2011): 2-3.
3/19/11: Davon House blew up his Pro Day with a 4.35 40. He really improved his chances of being drafted in the second round.
10/9/10: House needs to put on some weight, but there is no denying he is a cover corner with added ball skills.
5/13/10: Voted to the All-WAC First Team thanks to 13 pass break-ups and three interceptions as a junior.
-
Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Height: 5-11. Weight: 188.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Combine 40 Time: 4.53.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.46.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: 32. Arm: 30.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
3/13/11: Johnny Patrick improved upon his 40 at Louisville’s 40, running a 4.46 after notching a 4.53 at Lucas Oil Field’s slow turf.
-
Brandon Burton, CB, Utah
Height: 6-0. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: 4.50.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.50.
Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 32. Arm: 31 1/2.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
3/31/11: Brandon Burton can’t get off 4.50 in the 40. He worked out with the Browns.
3/2/11: Brandon Burton’s measurables checked out (4.50 40), but he struggled in the drills.
10/9/10: Burton is a very instinctive player with a great feel for the game. He’s a little finesse, but he shows the technique you want to see with a low backpedal and clean footwork.
-
Marcus Gilchrist, CB/FS, Clemson
Height: 5-10. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 26. Vertical: 38.5. Arm: 31 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
10/9/10: Gilchrist flashed on tape recently against Miami, but I need to see more consistency from this gifted corner.
5/13/10: Marcus Gilchrist had 96 tackles and broke up five passes as a junior.
-
Chimdi Chekwa, CB, Ohio State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 191.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Combine 40 Time: 4.33.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: . Vertical: 34.5. Arm: 31 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
5/13/10: An All-Big Ten honorable mention, Chimdi Chekwa broke up seven passes as a junior. He may have to play free safety in the pros.
-
Shareece Wright, CB, USC
Height: 5-11. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: 34.5. Arm: 32 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.
1/30/11: Shareece Wright played well in the Senior Bowl, nearly picking off Ricky Stanzi in the second quarter. Mike Mayock talked about Wright being a film rat; Wright apparently was studying tape Friday night in preparation for the game.
-
Brandon Hogan, CB/PR, West Virginia
Height: 5-10. Weight: 192.
Projected 40 Time: 4.38.
Combine 40 Time: DNP.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 19. Vertical: . Arm: 30 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 3-5.
3/28/11: Brandon Hogan didn’t work out at his Pro Day after failing to do anything except lift at the Combine. He’s still recovering from a torn ACL, so he’s a late-round prospect despite having mid-round talent.
10/9/10: Hogan has recently gotten in trouble again with a DUI. He has had multiple problems with his character in the past, and this hurts his draft stock.
5/13/10: Doubling as a potential solid punt returner, Brandon Hogan had 74 tackles and 11 pass break-ups in 2009.
-
Jalil Brown, CB, Colorado
Height: 6-1. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Combine 40 Time: 4.55.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.46.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 35.5. Arm: 30 3/4.
Projected Round (2011): 3-5.
3/10/11: Jalil Brown did well to improve his draft stock, running a 4.46 at his Pro Day.
10/9/10: Brown is a very underrated corner, but I’m a fan of his and he’s had a breakout season for Colorado.
5/13/10: Jalil Brown was voted as an All-Big XII honorable mention thanks to the 13 passes he broke up as a junior.
-
DeMarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami
Height: 6-1. Weight: 176.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Combine 40 Time: 4.33.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 5. Vertical: 33.5. Arm: 31 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 3-5.
3/27/11: DeMarcus Van Dyke stood on his Combine numbers, but looked good in the drills at Miami’s Pro Day. Well, “looked good” isn’t quite right. Maybe “performed well.” Van Dyke ran around with his shirt off, and he looked disgustingly skinny. He needs to put on some weight.
1/30/11: I mentioned DeMarcus Van Dyke earlier in the week, so I was pleased to see that he had a great game. Van Dyke drew an offensive pass interference flag on Titus Young in the third quarter of the Senior Bowl. Later, Van Dyke ran the opposing receiver’s route and nearly intercepted Jake Locker in the end zone.
1/26/11: Sam Shields came out of nowhere to help the Packers reach the Super Bowl this year. Can DeMarcus Van Dyke do the same thing as the next corner out of Miami? I thought Van Dyke looked really fluid in coverage during the one-on-one matchups. He’s only 168 pounds, but there’s definitely room for growth on his 6-1 frame.
10/9/10: Overshadowed by Brandon Harris, Dyke is a solid corner forming arguably the best corner duo in the nation. He is a zone corner at the next level.
-
Josh Thomas, CB, Buffalo
Height: 5-10. Weight: 191.
Projected 40 Time: N/A.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.43.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: 40. Arm: .
Projected Round (2011): 4-5.
-
Curtis Marsh, CB, Utah State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 197.
Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 12. Vertical: 37.5. Arm: 32.
Projected Round (2011): 4-5.
-
Buster Skrine, CB, UT-Chattanooga
Height: 5-10. Weight: 186.
Projected 40 Time: 4.35.
Combine 40 Time: 4.29.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 20. Vertical: 37. Arm: 30 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
3/30/11: Mike Mayock on Buster Skrine, who stood on his Combine numbers: “I was blown away by Buster Skrine at the Combine (but) he got beat three times against Auburn in the first quarter. He’s a fifth- or a sixth-round prospect.”
3/2/11: Buster Skrine had the fastest 40 at the Combine (unofficially), running a 4.29 40. He also had a 37-inch vertical. Later in the drills, Skrine proved that he’s not just a track guy. Deion Sanders remarked that Skrine looked raw at all; on the contrary, Skrine performed remarkably well.
-
Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina
Height: 5-9. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Combine 40 Time: 4.72.
Pro Day 40 Time: DNP.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 32.5. Arm: 29 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
4/1/11: After running a pedestrian 4.72 at the Combine, Kendric Burney curiously declined to attempt the 40 again at North Carolina’s Pro Day. He also worsened his vertical by 2.5 inches. On the bright side, however, Mike Mayock thinks he’ll be a good player in a Cover-2 scheme.
3/2/11: Teams understandably don’t like small and slow corners. The 5-9, 186-pound Kendric Burney ran a 4.72 on Tuesday. He also didn’t look very good in the drills. It’s a shame for Burney, who was outstanding at the Senior Bowl.
1/30/11: Kendric Burney gave up a touchdown to Leonard Hankerson and missed a tackle later on, but otherwise had an outstanding Senior Bowl. He nearly intercepted a Christian Ponder pass in the end zone and displayed great coverage skills throughout the afternoon. He also had a great tackle on special teams. Mike Mayock is in love with him; he compared him to Brandon Flowers.
1/28/11: Kendric Burney had close to a billion interceptions during Thursday’s practice. Or at least that’s what it seemed like. Maybe the quarterbacking was just abysmal, but Burney impressed.
1/26/11: One of the more impressive cornerbacks on Monday was Kendric Burney, who was very sharp in one-on-one drills.
10/9/10: Courtesy of CollegeInjuryReport.com: “Senior CB Kendric Burney is out for (two) more games due to a suspension stemming from an NCAA eligibility issue. His full punishment is a six-game suspension (of which he has served two games), and he must make a $575 donation to the charity of his choice.”
5/13/10: Kendric Burney has terrific skill – he had five interceptions and was named to the All-ACC First Team – but his height will scare some teams away.
-
Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech
Height: 5-10. Weight: 192.
Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Combine 40 Time: 4.49.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.39.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: 31. Arm: 31 3/4.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
3/18/11: Rashad Carmichael dropped his 40 time by a tenth at his Pro Day. Maybe it was the fast track, but Carmichael was still hampered with an ankle injury during the Combine.
10/9/10: Carmichael has the physical talent to play in the league, but he seems to lose his focus and lack awareness.
5/13/10: Rashad Carmichael collected 55 tackles, four TFL, six interceptions and six pass break-ups in 2009, earning an All-ACC honorable mention.
-
Cortez Allen, CB, The Citadel
Height: 6-1. Weight: 197.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: 4.45.
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: 18. Vertical: 35.5. Arm: 32 1/4.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
-
Richard Sherman, CB/FS, Stanford
Height: 6-3. Weight: 194.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Combine 40 Time: 4.50.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.49.
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: 37.5. Arm: 32.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
3/19/11: Richard Sherman didn’t improve his 40 by much, but he looked great in the drills during his Pro Day. The Vikings are one of the teams that really like him.
1/30/11: Richard Sherman was a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster, so it was nice to see him take advantage of his opportunity. Aside from one play late in the first half, Sherman had a great game; he intercepted Greg McElroy on a deep pass, but the pick was wiped out because of a penalty.
-
Chykie Brown, CB, Texas
Height: 5-11. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.39.
Combine 40 Time: 4.45.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.37.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 39. Arm: 33 7/8.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.
3/30/11: Chykie’s Pro Day 40 time is essentially meaningless because Texas has an ultra-fast track, but he looked solid in his workouts and was able to improve his vertical by 2.5 inches.
10/9/10: Brown has the athleticism to be a first-round pick, but the problem is his footwork, backpedal and overall technique need a major overhaul.
5/13/10: Where does Texas get all of these talented corners? Chykie Brown had 45 tackles, two picks and four pass break-ups in 2009.
-
Ryan Jones, CB, Northwest Missouri State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 198.
Projected 40 Time: N/A.

Projected Round (2011): 5-7.
-
Justin Rogers, CB/KR, Richmond
Height: 5-11. Weight: 183.
Projected 40 Time: 4.43.
Combine 40 Time: 4.44.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.40.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 33. Arm: 31 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 5-7.
3/30/11: Justin Richmond improved upon his already quick 40 at his Pro Day in front of 12 teams.
5/13/10: A very good kick-returner, Justin Rogers was named an AP All-Division I-AA Third Team member as a cornerback.
-
Byron Maxwell, CB, Clemson
Height: 6-0. Weight: 202.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Combine 40 Time: 4.46.

Benchx225: 12. Vertical: . Arm: .
Projected Round (2011): 5-7.
5/13/10: Anthony Gaitor had 45 tackles, 4.5 TFL, six pass break-ups and two picks as a junior.
-
Devon Torrence, CB, Ohio State

Benchx225: . Vertical: 33. Arm: 30 3/8.
Projected Round (2011): 5-7.
5/13/10: Devon Torrence had 35 tackles and broke up two passes in 2009.
-
Kevin Rutland, CB, Missouri
Height: 6-0. Weight: 188.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Combine 40 Time: 4.58.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.46.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 35.5. Arm: .
Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.
3/18/11: Kevin Rutland improved his 40 time by more than a tenth of a second at his Pro Day. He looked good in the drills.
-
Mario Butler, CB, Georgia Tech
Height: 6-1. Weight: 184.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Combine 40 Time: 4.65.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.56.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 33.5. Arm: 29 1/2.
Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.
5/13/10: Mario Butler collected 45 tackles, 4.5 TFL, three pass break-ups and two interceptions in 2009.
-

Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: .
Pro Day 40 Time: .
Benchx225: . Vertical: . Arm: .
Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.
5/13/10: Another talented North Carolina cornerback, Charles Brown broke up nine passes as a junior. Brown’s 40 will be very important because his height already puts him at a disadvantage.
-
Javes Lewis, CB, Oregon
Height: 6-1. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: .
Pro Day 40 Time: .
