2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Mitch McGary
Position: Center
Size: 6-10, 250
School: Michigan, Sophomore
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Summary: Due to an incredible performance in the NCAA Tournament last year, McGary could have been a lottery pick had he declared for the 2013 NBA Draft. Instead, he chose to return for his sophomore season. That decision backfired in a big way as McGary missed most of the year with a back injury. He was then forced to leave school since he was facing a 1-year suspension after testing positive for smoking marijuana. There will be concerns about the back issue and whether or not that will be a lingering problem. Still, McGary could slide into the first round due to his high-energy, physical style of play.
Player Comparison: Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough is known for toughness and being an energy guy who provides some physicality off the bench. McGary projects to be a similar type player. He doesn’t have the upside of some younger bigs, but he has the body to bang down low at the next level.
