2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Mitch McGary

Position: Center

Size: 6-10, 250

School: Michigan, Freshman

Strengths:
  • Plays incredibly hard
  • Active on the glass
  • Strength
  • Very physical
  • NBA-ready build
  • Clearing out space in the paint
  • Runs the floor well
  • Athleticism
  • Solid shot-blocker
  • Terrific passer for a big
  • Capable mid-range jumper

  • Weaknesses:
  • Back-to-the-basket game
  • Consistency with jumper
  • Free throw shooting

  • Summary: Due to an incredible performance in the NCAA Tournament, McGary has cemented his status as a first-round pick. He has an incredible motor and can impact the game in a number of ways without needing to score and should be a solid energy guy at the next level. It wouldn’t shock me to see him go as high as the mid-first round – possibly late lottery.

Player Comparison: J.J. Hickson. Though undersized to be a true NBA big man, Hickson has become a solid NBA player due to his strength and physicality inside. McGary will be a very similar player with his aggressiveness in the block. Neither guy has a really well-rounded offensive game but can be effective nonetheless.
