2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: James Southerland

Position: Small Forward

Size: 6-8, 215

School: Syracuse, Junior

Strengths:
  • 3-point shooting
  • NBA range and beyond from deep
  • Catch-and-shoot ability
  • Mid-range jumper
  • Moving off the ball
  • Free throw shooter
  • Shows explosiveness at the rim
  • Length
  • Active defender in passing lanes

  • Weaknesses:
  • Only played zone in college so man-to-man defense a question
  • Taking defenders off the bounce in iso situations
  • Ball handling
  • Average rebounder

  • Summary: Southerland will get a shot in the NBA solely because of his ability to knock down 3-point shots. He doesn’t do anything else all that impressivel on the court, but plenty of teams will be interested in him as a second-round prospect since he could possibly develop into an offensive sparkplug off the bench.

Player Comparison: Dorrell Wright. Wright is a 3-point gunner with good size. This would be a best-case scenario for Southerland to develop into a key bench scorer for some team and diversifying his offensive game to become more well-rounded.
