2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Shane Larkin

Position: Point Guard

Size: 5-11, 171

School: Miami, Sophomore

Strengths:
  • Floor general
  • Great poise
  • Court vision
  • Quickness
  • Knows when to score, when to be a distributor
  • Effective pick-and-roll point guard
  • Three point shooting
  • Catch-and-shoot ability
  • Step-back jumper
  • Doesn’t shy away from the big moment
  • Solid on-the-ball defender
  • Surprising explosiveness (NBA Draft Combine best 44 inch max vertical)

  • Weaknesses:
  • Undersized
  • Will struggle guarding bigger NBA point guards
  • Length

  • Summary: Behind a breakout sophomore campaign at Miami, Larkin emerged as a first-round prospect. His lack of size is a bit of a concern, but Barry’s son could be a nice change of pace point guard at the next level.

Player Comparison: Patty Mills. Neither guys fits the new prototypical NBA point guard stature due to a lack of size, but like Mills, Larkin should be at the very worst a solid NBA backup. Both players are capable floor generals and outside shooters. Larkin does have an edge on Mills with his athleticism.
