Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Marcus Williams, S, Saints. Age: 26.
Signed with Ravens (5 years, $70 million)

Marcus Williams has emerged as one of the best safeties in the NFL, and yet he’s still in his mid-20s. He’ll continue to dominate in the secondary for the next five-plus years.

  2. Jessie Bates, S, Bengals. Age: 25.
    Franchised by Bengals

Jessie Bates is one of the best young safeties in the NFL. He’s coming off a bit of a down year, but he should be able to rebound in 2022. He’s only 25, so his future is very bright.

  3. Quandre Diggs, S, Seahawks. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Seahawks (3 years, $40 million)

Quandre Diggs is one of the better safeties in the NFL. He’s a well-rounded player, and he still has another year remaining in his 20s.

  4. Justin Reid, S, Texans. Age: 25.
Signed with Chiefs (3 years, $31.5 million)

Justin Reid tends to be one of the top safeties in the NFL, though he’s coming off an unusual down year. He’ll certainly rebound, and he’s only 25 to boot.

  5. Marcus Maye, S, Jets. Age: 28.
Signed with Saints (3 years, $28.5 million)

Marcus Maye was an exceptional safety in 2020, but took a step backward last year before tearing his Achilles. The injury occurred during the middle of the season, so there’s a good chance Maye will be back on the field for the 2022 opener.

  6. Jordan Whitehead, S/CB, Buccaneers. Age: 25.
Signed with Jets (2 years, $14.5 million)

Jordan Whitehead has evolved greatly since being chosen in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s been a stellar defensive back for the Buccaneers, capable of playing safety and cornerback (mostly in the slot). He wasn’t even 25 when he closed out his 2021 season.

  7. Devin McCourty, S, Patriots. Age: 35.
    Re-signed with Patriots (1 year, $9 million)

Devin McCourty has been one of the top safeties in the NFL. However, he’s now 35, so major regression will happen at some point in the near future.

  8. Jayron Kearse, S, Cowboys. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Cowboys (2 years, $10 million)

Jayron Kearse was a surprise performer in 2021. He was a stellar force in the secondary in all regards, particularly in coverage.

  9. Tyrann Mathieu, S, Chiefs. Age: 30.
    Signed with Saints

Tyrann Mathieu is not the same dynamic safety from years ago, but he’s still strong in coverage. He tends to miss many tackles, however, and he turns 30 this offseason.

  10. DeShon Elliott, S, Ravens. Age: 25.
    Signed with Lions

DeShon Elliott played just five games in 2021. The Ravens missed him, as he’s a young, well-rounded safety.

  11. Tracy Walker, S, Lions. Age: 27.
    Re-signed with Lions (3 years, $25 million)

Tracy Walker was Detroit’s best defensive back in 2021, though that’s not really saying much. Still, he’s a solid safety who has several years remaining in his prime.

  12. Bobby McCain, S/CB, Redskins. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Redskins (2 years, $11 million)

Bobby McCain is a solid starting defensive back who can play anywhere in the secondary, including safety, outside cornerback and slot corner.

  13. Xavier Woods, S, Vikings. Age: 27.
Signed with Panthers (3 years, $15.75 million)

Xavier Woods isn’t great in coverage, but he’s a great tackler and run-supporting safety.

  14. Landon Collins, S, Redskins. Age: 28.
Landon Collins was terrible in coverage this past season, but that may have been because he wasn’t 100 percent coming off a torn Achilles. He could rebound in 2022.

  15. Jaquiski Tartt, S, 49ers. Age: 30.
The “lesser” of the two 49er safeties, Jaquiski Tartt is a big help in run support. He turns 30 this offseason.

  16. Kareem Jackson, S, Broncos. Age: 34.
    Re-signed with Broncos (1 year)

Kareem Jackson has been one of the better safeties in the NFL for years, but he finally showed his age a bit last year. He’s now 34, so there could be more regression in the near future.

  17. Jason McCourty, S/CB, Dolphins. Age: 35.
    Announced retirement

The usually reliable Jason McCourty struggled through a foot injury last year before being placed on injured reserve. He turns 35 just prior to the 2022 season.

  18. Ronnie Harrison, S, Browns. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Browns

Ronnie Harrison is a sure-tackling defensive back who can play in the slot in addition to his natural safety position.

  19. Terrell Edmunds, S, Steelers. Age: 25.
    Re-signed with Steelers

Terrell Edmunds has been a disappointment as a former first-round pick. He missed so many tackles and was poor in run support last year.

  20. Rodney McLeod, S, Eagles. Age: 32.
    Signed with Colts

Rodney McLeod was once considered a terrific safety, but those days are long gone. McLeod, 32 in June, was beaten in coverage frequently last year. He could rebound, but he may also regress.

  21. Logan Ryan, S/CB, Buccaneers. Age: 31.
    Re-signed with Buccaneers

Logan Ryan is coming off a down year, but could rebound. He’s capable of playing anywhere in the secondary.

  22. Anthony Harris, S, Eagles. Age: 30.
Anthony Harris has regressed from some great seasons in 2017 and 2018. Turning 31 in October, Harris could be in a permanent downtrend.

  23. Damontae Kazee, S, Cowboys. Age: 29.
  24. Andrew Adams, S, Buccaneers. Age: 29. — Signed with Giants
  25. Duron Harmon, S, Falcons. Age: 31. — Signed with Raiders
  26. Erik Harris, S, Falcons. Age: 32. — Re-signed with Falcons
  27. Malik Hooker, S, Cowboys. Age: 26. — Re-signed with Cowboys (2 years, $8 million)
  28. P.J. Williams, S/CB, Saints. Age: 29. — Re-signed with Saints
  29. Andrew Sendejo, S, Colts. Age: 34.
  30. Chris Banjo, S, Cardinals. Age: 32.
  31. DeAndre Houston-Carson, S, Bears. Age: 29. — Re-signed with Bears
  32. Juston Burris, S, Panthers. Age: 28. — Re-signed with Panthers (1 year)
  33. M.J. Stewart, S, Browns. Age: 26. — Signed with Texans
  34. Tashaun Gipson, S, Bears. Age: 32.
  35. Jabrill Peppers, S, Giants. Age: 26. — Signed with Patriots
  36. Ricardo Allen, S, Bengals. Age: 30.
  37. Jarrod Wilson, S, 49ers. Age: 28.
  38. George Odum, S, Colts. Age: 28. — Signed with 49ers
  39. Ryan Neal, S, Seahawks. Age: 26.
  40. Tavon Wilson, S, 49ers. Age: 32.
  41. Dane Cruikshank, S, Titans. Age: 27.
  42. Trey Marshall, S, Chargers. Age: 26.
  43. Armani Watts, S, Chiefs. Age: 26. — Signed with Colts
  44. Tony Jefferson, S, Ravens. Age: 30.
  45. Daniel Sorensen, S, Chiefs. Age: 32. — Signed with Saints

  47. Matthias Farley, S, Titans. Age: 30.

  54. Tarvarius Moore, S, 49ers. Age: 27.
