2022 NFL Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2022.
Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers. Age: 40.
    Announced retirement

Ben Roethlisberger took a team to the playoffs despite having a miserable offensive line and a horrible run defense. He can still be an effective game manager if he decides to play one more year.

  2. Jameis Winston, QB, Saints. Age: 28.
    Re-signed with Saints (2 years, $28 million)

Jameis Winston failed to complete 60 percent of his passes in 2021, but he was surprisingly careful with the football. He threw 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

  3. Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Broncos. Age: 29.
    Signed with Dolphins (1 year)

Teddy Bridgewater is a capable starting quarterback, capable of taking a team to the playoffs if everything around him is right. Bridgewater becomes a liability if things fall apart around him, however.

  4. Marcus Mariota, QB, Raiders. Age: 28.
Signed with Falcons (2 years, $18.75 million)

I’d like to say that Marcus Mariota is a young quarterback with potential despite his final years in Tennessee, but he turns 29 just before Halloween.

  5. Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Bills. Age: 28.
    Signed with Steelers (2 years)

Mitchell Trubisky never got a fair chance in Chicago because of Matt Nagy’s incompetence. He’s talented, so perhaps a better coaching staff can turn him into a viable quarterback.

  6. Jacoby Brissett, QB, Dolphins. Age: 29.
    Signed with Browns (1 year)

Jacoby Brissett was considered one of the top backup quarterbacks in the NFL heading into 2021. Perhaps that’s still the case, but Brissett struggled in relief of Tua Tagovailoa, maintaining a poor 5.7 YPA. That said, the horrendous offensive line played a part.

  7. Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Redskins. Age: 39.
    Announced retirement

Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t even play a half of football in 2021, suffering a season-ending hip injury. Perhaps he’ll get another chance to start in 2022, but at 39, the end is near.

  8. Geno Smith, QB, Seahawks. Age: 31.
    Re-signed with Seahawks (1 year)

Geno Smith is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He complated 68 percent of his passes and threw five touchdowns compared to one interception in relief of Russell Wilson.

  9. Kyle Allen, QB, Redskins. Age: 26.
Signed with Texans (1 year, $2.5 million)

Kyle Allen did well in relief of Cam Newton in 2019, throwing for 3,322 yards and completing 62 percent of his passes. He’s only 26.

  10. Colt McCoy, QB, Cardinals. Age: 35.
    Re-signed with Cardinals (2 years, $7.5 million)

Colt McCoy proved to be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL last year, winning multiple games against quality competition.

  11. Andy Dalton, QB, Bears. Age: 34. — Signed with Saints (1 year, $6 million)
  12. Nick Foles, QB, Bears. Age: 33. — Signed with Colts (2 years)
  13. Josh Johnson, QB, Broncos. Age: 36.
  14. Nick Mullens, QB, Browns. Age: 27. — Signed with Raiders
  15. Tyrod Taylor, QB, Texans. Age: 33. — Signed with Giants (2 years, $17 million)
  16. Joe Flacco, QB, Jets. Age: 37. — Re-signed with Jets (1 year, $3.5 million)
  17. Brandon Allen, QB, Bengals. Age: 29. — Re-signed with Bengals (1 year)
  18. Blaine Gabbert, QB, Buccaneers. Age: 32. — Re-signed with Buccaneers
  19. Chad Henne, QB, Chiefs. Age: 37. — Re-signed with Chiefs (1 year)
  20. Cam Newton, QB, Panthers. Age: 33.
  21. Chase Daniel, QB, Chargers. Age: 35. — Re-signed with Chargers (1 year, $2.25 million)
  22. Blake Bortles, QB, Saints. Age: 30.
  23. Mike Glennon, QB, Giants. Age: 32.
  24. Joshua Dobbs, QB, Steelers. Age: 27. — Signed with Browns
  25. Cooper Rush, QB, Cowboys. Age: 28.
  26. Nathan Peterman, QB, Bears. Age: 28.
  27. Davis Webb, QB, Giants. Age: 27.
  28. Matt Barkley, QB, Bills. Age: 31.
  29. Sean Mannion, QB, Vikings. Age: 30.
  30. A.J. McCarron, QB, Falcons. Age: 31.
  31. Garrett Gilbert, QB, Redskins. Age: 31. — Signed with Raiders
  32. Colin Kaepernick, QB, None. Age: 34.
  33. Tim Boyle, QB, Lions. Age: 27.
  34. Josh Rosen, QB, Browns. Age: 25.
  35. Nate Sudfeld, QB, 49ers. Age: 28. — Signed with Lions
  36. Jake Fromm, QB, Giants. Age: 24.
